Imagine a scenario where the Cleveland Browns walk away with the two best prospects in the 2018 draft AND their quarterback of the future?
Sound too good to be true? It’s not, and I’ll tell you why.
Let’s assume that the Browns take Barkley with the #1 overall pick. What happens at #2? Literally every team looking for a QB will be calling the Giants to trade and someone will pay the price to move up for their guy. And we know that the Jets are taking a QB at #3. That means that two quarterbacks will be off the board, leaving some combination of (Mayfield, Allen, Rosen and Darnold). If the QB the Browns most covet is still there, they take him. But I assert the Brown’s QB of the future will not be drafted at 4, and instead they should take Bradley Chubb. BOOM! The Browns land the top two players in the 2018 draft.
But Dawgstyle, what about the QB of the future? You said the best two players in the draft AND the QB of the future. Indeed I did, and the Browns address that position with their 3rd round pick (65th overall pick).
But Dawgstyle, we don’t have the 65th pick in the draft anymore. What are you talking about?
You’re right. We traded that pick for Tyrod Taylor. I believe he is the QB of the future for the Cleveland Browns. He was in a very Drew Brees like scenario where Buffalo wanted to move on despite his performance. Taylor is a Pro Bowl caliber QB that can make plays with his arm and his feet. If Baker Mayfield is even a thought at #1, Tyrod Taylor is just as viable an option.
At some point we have to stop caring about who is taken where and look at the team. With Tyrod Taylor, Saquon Barkley, Jarvis Landry. an improved David Njoku and Josh Gordon – this is a TEAM that can score points, control the clock and win games.
I was banging the table for Mahomes last year. I don’t see a guy like that in this draft. Mayfield, Rosen, Allen and Darnold may be the next Wilson, Rodgers, Wentz and Palmer. The red flags for each seem to indicate that’s not likely.
For my money, the plan outlined above is what we SHOULD do. Bottom line, I feel like it has the highest probability to result in the most wins for us in 2018 and beyond.

But you lost me at Tyrod Taylor as the QB of the future.
Sorry, that ain’t happenin’. Still, we are taking Barkley at 1 so there’s that we can agree on!

We could (hypothetically) trade the first pick for magic beans. That doesn’t mean it was the right thing to do (but congratulations if you guessed that was what they’d do).

April 26, 2018 at 6:35 pm #12285soupParticipantI believe it still holds true that the only RB to lead the league in rushing and win a Super Bowl is Emmitt Smith.
We need the QB at #1 and it must be our guy. Not the guy someone else didn’t want.
Since 1999 we’ve utilized 1 top 10 pick on a QB. Our most glaring hole on the team? QB.
No one wants to run the ball more than me. That’s an undebatable fact.
That said, it’s time to get the QB already.
Oh, and tonight at #2 NYG get their QB or take a trade from someone leaping NYJ. Barkley and Chubb will both be available at #4.

April 26, 2018 at 6:48 pm #12287DawgstyleParticipantSoup, I agree if Dorsey feels about a QB in this draft the way I felt about Mahomes. I do not feel the same about a QB in this draft class as I did about Mahomes, so to me, anyone is this draft is the guy someone else (the Chiefs) didn’t want.
As such, I would take the BPAs.

April 26, 2018 at 7:52 pm #12292DawgstyleParticipantFor me, it’s Barkley all day. I do believe he is a generational type talent and the majority of games in the NFL are won by scoring more than 23.1 points per game. The low hanging fruit is scoring, and I think Barkley makes the most sense as a result (in addition to him being the BPA).
