No draft grades here, a simple black or white, love or hate the pick.
Mayfield. Love or Hate?
Me, I have to be fair. The only thing I’m gonna knock him on is his size. I hate it. He’s not sub 6-foot, but he’s just barely over it. That concerns me, but it’s something a player can succeed with in spite of. We have examples and we all know them.
That aside. He’s got a live arm, he is crazy accurate, he doesn’t make turnovers, he has great ability both in and out o the pocket, he can extend a play, he can scramble, he’s a fireball of a competitor and he makes everyone around him better. We can sit here and poo poo his size all we want, but if that’s all we have to bitch about then I think that’s pretty weak. I defended his off the field stuff long ago so I have no character issues with him. Let’s face it, if he were 6-4 he’d have been the consensus #1 pick and the discussion would have only been about by how much.
Mark me down in the I’m loving it box.
Denzel Ward.
All-American at a position of overwhelming need. Was Chubb a better defensive player? Yeah. But he plays the same position as Myles Garret, and we already have him. We also already have pass rushers on the other side. What we didn’t have was a secondary. We signed a safety, and now we drafted probably the biggest position of need after QB with a guy who might be the best DB in this draft to pair him with. Plus I expect far more from Peppers this year now that he shouldn’t be playing 74 yards off the ball and completely out of position.
I’m putting myself down for Love it on this one as well.
April 26, 2018 at 10:19 pm #12304DawgstyleParticipantOf all the QBs we could have taken, I’m glad we took Mayfield. He’s going to be a star in the NFL, and the only real knock against him (as Shooter pointed out) is his height. If he was 6’3” tall he’d easily be the first QB off the board for most teams.
I was not for taking a QB, but, as I said to my buddy John that I linked in chat, if we took one I wanted Baker Mayfield (though I would have preferred Barkley/Chubb – which was consistent with my post here).
That said, I like the Mayfield pick.
As for the Ward pick…
I like it as well. He plays like a mean Joe Haden, and, despite his size, he’s routinely covered tight ends well (check out his highlight videos) despite his size.
This draft is not what I would have done -but- I have more faith in this FO’s ability to evaluate talent than any other FO before them. I’ll withhold judgement until the season is over. At some point this franchise needs to be judged by wins and losses and not draft grades or free agent signings.
818 mph. 13,723 feet. 3 second burn.
https://youtu.be/hy-3bb1Nqy0April 26, 2018 at 10:37 pm #12305MDP Sack AttackParticipantI’m all in on Mayfield. Arm, accuracy, uses his mobility to extend plays. Tons of fire and leadership, he won’t settle for a losing attitude. He’s going to be the hardest worker in the locker room from day one, and he’s going to push everyone else and call out the slackers.
I’m not sold on Ward’s ability to handle larger and stronger NFL recievers, but everyone else seems to think otherwise so I’ll defer. Dorsey has a great track record with DBs.

That’s my feelings in a nutshell. All the qbs had flaws, but I’m glad they took the guy they wanted. For Mayfield, unlike other qbs, his flaws are out of his control. Namely, he’s not very tall, and he plays in the big 12.
The big 12 I can live with. It doesn’t bode well, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll bust. Height? I tend to think short qbs struggle Elmore because they tend to have less arm strenght and have a weaker build. He’s built tough and has a strong arm, so that’s not a concern.
I question Ward more than Mayfield.
April 26, 2018 at 11:41 pm #12307soupParticipantBrian Fallon was fucking awesome in concert. Go see him.
1. John Dorsey took the Chiefs from dogshit to playoffs yearly.
2. Baker Mayfield. Everyone knows Eliot Wolf is in the Browns front office right? You all know his father Ron Wolf knows QBs right? You don’t think his dad had advice on the QB? You’re insane.
3. Ward. No one hates top 10 corners more than me right? So why am I totally on board with this pick? John Dorsey picked Marcus Peters.
Gregg Williams D can’t cause pressure. It’s awful in that regard. We needed corner way more than a guy who wouldn’t get to the QB under Williams. We need coverage sacks rushing 4. We need picks too.
Look at the front office. Trust them. It’s got a proven track record for the first time since we’ve been back in the league

April 27, 2018 at 3:49 am #12308GABrownsFanParticipantI love the Baker pick. My fave all along, and I’m a USC fan. Sam was my second choice.
The Ward pick really surprised me, but, like Soup, after it was made, Marcus Peters came to mind.
And with Tyrod, no reason to rush Baker onto the field too soon.
April 27, 2018 at 6:07 am #12309DawgPoundDudeParticipantI think we walked away with the players we wanted. I have a feeling it was gonna be Barkley at 4, but when that couldn’t happen, we followed our board.
All things considered, Dorsey probably played it as safe as possible with these picks, and I gotta say neither of them are bad at all.
I just hope Mayfield doesn’t turn out to be Colt McCoy with an attitude. More like Drew Brees. Let his ass sit behind Stanton on depth and learn this year, and this may be the best pick since ’99.
Ward is an excellent pick. NFL seems to be trending to smaller, faster corners, and this guy may be the best of the bunch. Hits like he’s 230, plays fast, and isn’t gonna get pushed around by Brown or Green. Only pick I might have taken instead would have been Fitzpatrick, but like Soup said, Dorsey knows his shit better than I.
I’m glad we didn’t trade down, either.
And, staying totally on subject, who else ordered a draft hat? My wife started getting them for me every draft, and this year is no exception…and it looks better than last year’s (but not the year before that; still my favorite). But I about pissed myself laughing when I saw the Titan’s hat…Titan Up? Dude…I wish I could have been here last night. Went to watch the Avengers (go see it, Marvel fans) on opening night. I was still laughing about it afterwards. Poor Titan fans.
April 27, 2018 at 7:53 am #12311BillWunkleParticipantI hate the selection of Baker Mayfield for his lack of size and his lack of maturity. Of the consensus top 4 quarterbacks, he’s the oldest and the most immature. I was so pissed at the announcement, I was almost to the point of spitting up blood. it made me physically ill.
Wile the selection of Denzel Ward was a decent selection, he wasn’t the best player available. With three picks in the second round, they were poised to get an elite starting caliber corner in round two. As it turns out, Iowa’s Josh Jackson is still on the board. Bradley Chubb was the best choice hands down. And while I’m happy for Ward that he gets to come home and play NFL football, I just think that the Browns blew the pick . . . again.
Am I going mad, or did the word THINK escape your lips? You were not hired for your brains, you hippopotamic landmass!
April 27, 2018 at 8:23 am #12312IceKeymasterUh oh, this draft does not get the Wunkle seal of approval….
It does however get the Ice thumbs up for now. All any of us did was take a cursory look at these QB’s. Watch some games, listen to some interviews, read ‘expert’ opinions. I feel confident that our front office took as deep of a dive into these men as it is possible to do without putting on a condom.
Good luck getting that image out of your mind.
April 27, 2018 at 8:29 am #12313DawgPoundDudeParticipantYou know man, I wouldn’t hate it If we took Jackson with our first 2nd round pick. Two young, really good corners coming up together would be pretty cool.
Still, I imagine we take a RB (Guice, Chubb) or a WR (Kirk, Sutton) here. My money (which ain’t worth a damn) would be on a WR.
But Bill, I will disagree with the Mayfield maturity issues. Other than getting drunk and a little belligerent, his biggest flaw is how his passionate nature gets the best of him.
And I’d be pretty pissed if my opponent refused to shake my hand, too. Might not express it the same way, but he also ran the score up because of it. The OSU flag-plant wasn’t exactly incurring a 15 yard penalty…it was after the game.
Now, his size isn’t something he can change, but I ask you- how many batted balls have you seen him throw? I know he’s “small” compared to the NFL average, but it’s hardly a recipe for failure.
But I think I would have liked the Darnold pick better here. Still, I’ll reiterate- so far, so good. I don’t hate it.
April 27, 2018 at 8:35 am #12314mike barnesParticipantI’m onboard with both picks now on to day 2

The only way to get that pressure is to get coverage sacks. Williams had 3 1st round picks on the dline in St Louis. He managed bottom 3rd in sacks.
While this draft made you want to spit blood, know that the 3 main guys in our FO helped build the Chiefs and Packers into perennial playoff teams. If you don’t think Eliot talked to his dad about Mayfield, your crazy.
This is the first office we can actually trust.

April 27, 2018 at 9:06 am #12318the dudeParticipantI am dissatisfied with both picks. When you have pick 1, you take the elite. I cannot say the baker is the elite. Am I mad about it? Not really. I don’t think it is going to make a difference one way or another.
Coaching makes super bowl teams. We have the biggest loser who is going to coach these guys. Poor work ethic all the way down.
Ward is an elite talent no doubt. But he will look bad because again year in and year out our offense is garbage….goes back to coaching.
Hue Jackson is a loser.

Mayfield is definitely polarizing, I’m hearing a lot of fans not happy about it. I think most of them are also Buckeyes fans (as am I) and they’d feel differently about the pick if Bakers flag had been planted in the big house.
April 27, 2018 at 1:44 pm #12321the dudeParticipantYou know I am a buckeye fan and I already forgot about it…
What worries me is he is somewhat of a partier and can have a big mouth on him. We already had a Johnny manziel experience….. At this point do we really have to worry on Friday night whether our qb will get home from the bar.
I fucking hate Hue Jackson. He is 10x worse than crennel.
Hue Jackson is a loser.
April 27, 2018 at 3:24 pm #12323IceKeymasterGregg Williams wants to only rush 4. The only way to get that pressure is to get coverage sacks.
Wow.
Pretty much the opposite of reality. Williams is known for his blitzing. The Browns were far and away the biggest blitzing team in the league last season. Williams wants good corners because when he sends 6 guys he’s putting those corners on an island.
April 27, 2018 at 3:27 pm #12325ShooterModeratorand the most immature.
Completely unfounded, and honestly just plain false.
Please, I implore you to give me examples that lead you to this. In his entire college career he’s had 3 so-called off the field issues. 3. Total. And 2 of them are stupid.
If you saw Mayfield grabbing his crotch and telling the Steelers to go fuck themselves, you’d build a statue of him and you know it.
April 28, 2018 at 9:28 am #12336IceKeymasterMayfield does struggle with immaturity. It’s ok to admit it. In fact, I have a confession for you. I have also struggled with immaturity my whole life. I fart out loud and laugh at it. I high five random strangers for no reason. I photobomb anyone who takes a selfie near me even if I’m by myself and there’s no one else to see it. I’m immature. And if I was a stud QB you damn skippy I’d be making the ‘dick sucking’ gesture to the Steelers and telling the press I was just yawning.
April 28, 2018 at 10:21 am #12338mike barnesParticipantSo far I think this front office has gotten guys they wanted all along and fit what they want to do in scheme, now on to day 3
