First off ‘analyst’ draft grades are pure shit. They are grading a team based off their own perceived rankings of players. It’s ridiculous for an analyst to say they know more about the draft than 5 guys with 100 years combined experience who just spent months locked in a closet researching everything about everyone. IMO ‘analysts’ are actually grading how close their draft board was to reality. If a team gets an F, it just means that the analyst’s own rankings were unrealistic.
That said, here’s some draft grades.
Bleacher Report: B
Keep in mind that BR gave us an A- on the Justin Gilbert pick and an A+ on the Manziel pick…)
SB Nation: B-
SB Nation only gave the Raiders a B+ on the draft that netted them Khalil Mack and Derek Carr.
CBS SPorts: B-
Walter Football: C+
“The Browns, however, made a mistake of not selecting Barkley first overall, as they also would’ve obtained Mayfield at the No. 4 spot.” We know that to be untrue, had we not drafted Mayfield 1st overall he would have gone 2nd to the Giants or someone else. I think Ward will have a greater impact on our team than Barkley would have.
Sports Illustrated: B-
Mostly because Baker Mayfield isn’t 6’3″. Real strong work there SI. Quality reporting.
Pro Football Focus: Good
Their rankings seem to go from ‘Below Average’ to ‘Elite’.May 2, 2018 at 12:43 pm #12431the dudeParticipantShooterlikepeeps writer for Walter.
I think the draft was pretty good. I actually like the fact that maybe these grades are tough. We have had how many failures in the first two rounds since 99.
I know some would argue with me, but really Thomas and Mack have been the only really elite at least in my memory right now.
I would also put the browns in the B range in the first 3 rounds. I really like both second round picks.
Hue Jackson is a loser.

Truer words have never been spoken.
May 2, 2018 at 10:17 pm #12440mike barnesParticipantMaybe Baker would have been there at #4 and maybe he wouldn’t, the main thing was getting the QB they wanted not another RB in a class loaded with RB talent. Get over it Shooter the Browns passed on Barkley twice for a very good reason.
May 3, 2018 at 8:21 am #12442ShooterModeratorGet over it Shooter
NEVER!!
May 3, 2018 at 8:22 am #12443ShooterModeratorI’m not unhappy with the draft. We got good players at positions of glaring need and our team got much, much better.
May 3, 2018 at 8:42 am #12444Dawg E. DawgParticipantSo, I’ve noticed 2 particular things this year with draft grades and rankings. First, a lot of analysts crapped on the Browns picks simply because they are the Browns, and there’s the assumption that they will make bad picks. Case in point is Denzel Ward. Almost every mock had him picked at 7, five or take a couple, and talked about how he’s the best corner in the draft. Browns pick him at 4, and all of a sudden it’s a reach. They’ll say it’s because Chubb was available, but in reality it’s because Browns. Chubb himself was touted by a couple sources as being a better prospect than Myles Garrett(he’s not, btw). Why? Because Garrett is a Brown. After 1-31 it’s understandable, but frustrating.
The second trend I’ve noticed is analyst are tired of talking about the Browns making sooo many picks (3rd year in a row), so theyve refuses to acknowledge the Browns picked up a lot of talent. Case in point? NFL.com posted a draft class power ranking. Think about that for a second: a power ranking for each teams draft class. The Browns were around 8-10 range. Huh? The first two teams: giants and cowboys. Pandering to big markets. Based on number of picks alone, there’s no way to justify any team but the Browns at 1. No way at all.
May 3, 2018 at 8:51 am #12445IceKeymasterLol a draft class power ranking? I’d put our draft class against any other team’s in a 7 on 7 and we’d destroy them.
May 3, 2018 at 9:47 am #12446Dawg E. DawgParticipantMay 3, 2018 at 11:07 am #12447IceKeymasterObviously, anytime you pass on the top-rated players for a need position like QB it can come back to haunt you, but when you do it again for an undersized (but talented) cornerback in Ward, it opens you up for second guessing.
Passed on the top rated players?!? Let me guess, another Barkley clone. ‘OMG Barkley so amazing. So GENERATIONAL.’ Save it. Trent Richardson was a generational can’t-miss RB too.
May 3, 2018 at 12:21 pm #12448the dudeParticipantI still think we have a high issue at the end of the day with this team. A lack of solid receivers.
Landry was a huge pickup and it allowed the Browns to not draft another playmaker. In a passing league though, we really could be hurting at this position. Hopefully Gordon works out, but I don’t have much faith in coleman.
This could be a problem if we only have a TE and a receiver that will be impact players. Are they going to try Johnson back out at this position????

May 3, 2018 at 1:05 pm #12449IceKeymasterAgree 100% @dude. I thought we’d target a WR with one of those top 2nd round picks instead of an RB. I’m very concerned about our WR depth. Gordon didn’t draw doubleteams last year so teams don’t respect him like a true #1 receiver. He and Njoku are the keys. If Gordon returns to form Njoku should have an absolute monster season. But God forbid if we lose a starting WR for any part of the season we’re down to draft bust Coleman and possibly suspended Calloway. Worst case scenario: Gordon is no longer elite and is just ‘good’. Njoku regresses. Coleman maintains his status as a waste of oxygen, and Calloway never sees the field. That puts us in the exact same place we were last year, picking guys off the street and making them starters. Best case scenario we have one of the best receiving corps in the league. Gordon blows the top off the defense, Landry does what he’s always done and gets 100 catches for over 1000 yards and dragging free safeties all over the field, Njoku breaks out, and Calloway stays on the field and shows Coleman what 1st round talent looks like. Now combine that with a running game that can knock your doors off and how do you cover it? Don’t tell me you’re gonna run a zone defense because we’ll run that RPO right up your a$$ and make your LB’s lose their minds.
May 3, 2018 at 1:17 pm #12451Dawg E. DawgParticipantI think its mainly a reflection of how poor the receivers in this draft class are. Dorsey made the Landry trade so he wouldn’t have to reach in the draft to fill the need at WR.
May 3, 2018 at 2:12 pm #12452ShooterModeratorObviously, anytime you pass on the top-rated players
I’m guessing Dawgsoldier wrote this because I only saw it quoted in Ice’s post. This is a stupid take. It’s coming out now that ovr a dozen NFL teams had Mayfield ranked as the #1 QB on their board, and Ward was heavily debated with Fitzpatrick as the best DB in the draft.
So, we got 2 of the top rated players in the draft. What the fuck more do you want?

Agreed.

He had Mayfield ranked as the 3rd best QB, behind Darnold and Rosen, and Ward as the best DB. He never did an overall prospect ranking, so it’s impossible to say how he had them ranked outside their positional groups.
All that said, as Ice pointed out when he says “top rated players” he means as rated by those not in the NFL, so it’s really irrelevant.
May 4, 2018 at 9:38 am #12456the dudeParticipant@ice a running game could go a long way for this team.
Unfortunately, I feel like we are in the same spot we were last year. Unstable is the word that would describe this team. We won’t know until a few games in this season how Chubb will transition. I love the pick, but we don’t really have anything else reliable. Running backs are just a toss in the air sometimes.
Back to receivers. Behind Gordon, Landry, and Nojuku, I don’t think we have anything that wonderful. Any one of these players gets hurt or just doesn’t perform up to par, it will be another failure of the season. Doesn’t matter who the qb is.
Hue Jackson is a loser.
