NO! This is not a big deal. First off, he’s coming off some injuries so rest is probably a good prescription. Secondly, Gipson knows the defense. It’s not like he’s some rookie or even a transplant from another team that has never worked in the defense before. Thirdly, he’s looking for a contract and holding out of OTA’s is almost always par for the course for guys hoping for a payday. I fully expect to see him back in time for training camp unless he has a mystery thigh injury that vets often come down with that mystically heals fully by preseason.
EDIT 6/12/15: Gipson is signing his tender and will return to practice this week.
May 26, 2015 at 11:34 am #1390BrownsFan4LifeParticipantAs long as they are voluntary then no. Is he falling behind a bit? Probably but I don’t think it is anything that can’t be made up.
May 27, 2015 at 8:32 am #1396the dudeParticipantThis is a concern…Haden said Gipson is pissed he can’t get something long term set in ink. He may be the first one in a long time that actually wants to stay here….I think they should get 3 more years on the books for him.
Hue Jackson is a loser.

Resigning Gipson is a very big concern; I’m saying that Gipson missing OTA’s is not.

I am really not sure what is going on here unless his knee hasn’t healed and they know something we don’t. I don’t think his payday would be that big.
Too many get wrapped up in the OTA’s. IMO – its just a way to be active and involved. To get some basic reps in with your teammates and start preparing your body for the regular season.

May 27, 2015 at 5:24 pm #1421durakbaneParticipantHe wants “Devin McCourty” money from what I have read.

The last FS to get a big contract.

I would really like to see the numbers…I mean, dude had a great year last year. If the Browns are confidant he has recovered, then they should work a deal out with solid numbers. If they are not, then they should be trading him tomorrow. This team is still going to be garbage and he has value IMO.

They’re pretty much screwing him out of $1m by slapping him with a second round tender instead of a first. Whether they’re trying to ink him long term or not remains to be seen, but Farmer better hit the gas soon or we may lose a pretty damn good player over chump change.

he blew a leg last year. giving him a long term contract without him running 40 yards down the field would be asinine. However, I do want to see this one get done because I think he could be a core player. Gipson will probably not have another “as good as” year as he had this year…..but he could be a strong player.

June 12, 2015 at 8:31 pm #1637IceKeymasterGipson is reportedly signing his tender and will be back this coming week.
So like I said in the first place, no big deal.
June 12, 2015 at 10:14 pm #1639durakbaneParticipantI don’t know about this…signing the tender is not exactly the same as signing a new contract and locking the player down. I think it simply means, wait until next year….
Which, is what we are kind of dealing with right now with Alex Mack. All it does is essentially give us one year, to prove to one of our players, that we will win AND they will get paid. To me, the problem is that we haven’t proven we will win AND we are not established enough for players to give us a “home town discount.” In other words, players like Mack and Gipson are simply betting that they will play enough in the upcoming season to cash in from a different team next season. The only caveat that I will claim is that there is a chance the Browns are low balling Gipson because they have a disproportionate amount of the salary cap tied into the defensive backfield.
Unless something miraculous happens, I do believe Mack is gone and I do believe Gipson is gone as well. Reference: Cameron.
The only way this works out for us is if <insert Mack or Gipson> underperforms and we are justified in not offering max dollars in re-signing them.
That’s my current opinion.
