Sounds like we’ve jumped pretty solidly into the mix. I’d have to assume signing him would mean Vernon gets his walking papers.

What would you think? The penalties scare me, but even if his sack numbers haven’t been huge he’s an absolute beast and demands double teams consistently. We’d likely have the most intimidating defensive line the league has seen in years.

Clayborn Clowney Garrett Vernon lined up like so on known passing downs would pretty damn scary.

Though with Garrett and Clowney the team might lead the league in penalty yards on defense…..

    Vernon’s as good as gone.

Clowney would be an upgrade IMO.

He’s a 3X upgrade, just based on availablity.

His availability isn’t guaranteed either. He’s struggle to stay healthy at times in his career.

Personally, I’d be pissed if we release Vernon UNLESS we add a talent like Clowney, and no longer have a starting spot for Vernon available.

If we can sign Clowney then Vernon is definitely gone. This would also make the signing of Clayborn (two year deal) even better. He would be a solid backup and would be able to give both Garrett and Clowney rest as needed.

One of the most insanely overrated players in the NFL.

Of All-time. Under performing, oft injured, average-at-best player still treading off of 1 hit in college and for some unknown reason the whoppity-do 32 sacks he’s had in 6 years in the NFL.

Dude has never even had more than 9 sacks in one season.

    Ever lol.

He isn’t worth even half of what he’s asking.

Agree with all of that. No question.

The only reason I’m not opposed to signing him, is we have a similar guy (talent level wise) in Vernon, who is also not worth what he’s getting paid.

Who would you rather have, Clowney or Vernon? For me, it’s almost a toss up. They’ve both had injury issues, and they’ve both only looked good when they’ve had a dominant pass rusher on the line with them. Neither are successful Alphas. I give the edge to Clowney, he’s more physically gifted and a little younger.

Either way, I just don’t want to see them cut Vernon to save money, then not spend it and claim “Chad Thomas has had the light come on.” I’ve read that book too many damn times.

Yeah, probably Clowney if I had to choose. But I guess it would depend on who was cheaper too because I agree it’s pretty much a toss-up.

Considering one has a huge injury history and one doesn’t, I would go with the one who doesn’t.

Vernon has missed 4 or more games each of the past 3 seasons.

Vernon has misseed 15 games in the last three years, Clowney has missed 7. In that span Clowney has 21.5 sacks, Vernon has 16.

Clowney hasn’t lived up to the hype as a generational pass rusher coming out of the draft, but neither does every other college player who are billed as the heir apparent to LT.

He’s a beast against the run, sets the edge like a monster, and would give us an incredibly dynamic bookend for Myles Garrett.
