The Browns released their opening game depth chart and there are some surprises.
Offense:
The first thing I was looking for right off the bat was to see where 1st round pick Cam Erving is playing on the O-line. It’s no secret that the right side of our line was extremely weak last year so I’m really disappointed that Erving didn’t claim one of those two spots and make us better. Still it’s only game 1 and I don’t see Greco and Schwartz both holding him on the bench all season.
At receiver it’s Hawkins and Hartline, which would be awesome if they were our #2 and #3 receivers. Benjamin and Gabriel follow them up, and then Dwayne Bowe the $9 million dollar man is 3rd string. That is sad.
Crowell and Johnson are the only two running backs, and Johnson is currently in the NFL concussion protocol so look for a move to be made at that position pretty much immediately.
Defense:
Shelton has locked down the NT position which was a foregone conclusion with the releases of Kitchen and Taylor.
At linebacker Kirksey has taken over as the Will linebacker, and sadly Solomon has beaten Mingo for the OLB spot opposite Kruger. I say sadly because you’d hope a top 10 pick like Mingo would start for his team.
Not many surprises at defensive back. Justin Gilbert is 4th on the depth chart likely only because Pierre Desir is in the concussion protocol.
On special teams Marlin Moore will be returning kicks and Benjamin will be returning punts.
So what do you think?
Two things that really stand out and cause huge alarms to go off…
Running Back – How can we possibly go into game #1 with just Crowell as our lone healthy back. For a team that is supposed to be ‘run heavy’ this is a recipe for disaster. Nothing can convince me that this bodes well, for at least game #1. You can’t sign anyone that would make me feel any different. Draughn better be the back up..but that still doesn’t give me encouragement.

Wide Receiver – Anytime you list Hawkins and Hartline as your top 2, you are in big trouble. I know that Bowe will contribute, but it smacks you in the face when you look at the depth chart. I blame Gordon for this. A ‘legit’ Gordon would have been a playmaker that defenses had to respect. Against the Jets, we are in trouble. No disrespect to our WRs..they will try hard, but when you factor our RB situation into our WR situation ALONG with our QB situation…you better hope our defense can score 14 points themselves.
EDIT: I came back to my post and re-read it to see if I was being too harsh. I re-looked at the official depth chart. On the offensive side, this might just be the worst looking depth chart we have had since 1999. The O-line looks great but the rest of it looks like a mess. No…I wasn’t too harsh. I think I was being kind. As a matter of fact, the defense may want to consider playing two ways. I hope I am dead wrong…but holy cow.
We’ve had 12 first round picks since 2007, and 4 of them are starting for our team (or any team, actually). Enough said, there.
Erving had a very good preseason, but Greco by all accounts had a fantastic off season and fought hard to keep his job. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Greco slide over to RT to make room, at some point this season.
I’m hoping the lack of running backs and our reliance on tiny, quick WRs does not mean an offense built around bubble screen and end-arounds, because that would be very Cleveland Browns of us.
I hope Pryor dresses, I really was not excited about him until that final preseason game. He WANTS to be here, and is willing to do whatever it takes, as shown by the sheer effort he put into blocking. He can be a great special teams weapon and would make a great decoy on the goal line, while he works on his receiving skills.
And just cut Bowe. Eat the money. The quickness with which he gives up on plays was mind boggling.

While I agree with you on his giving up, I think that somehow, some way, he was offended to be playing in preseason #4. He’s had character issues with KC a few years back if I recall…can’t recall what they were off-hand, however. And now this- #3 on the depth chart.
Maybe all that fire needed was a bit of gasoline to go out…?

Well there you go, @Soup told us all so. Bowe certainly didn’t take game 4 seriously, like he felt he was above it. I don’t think he realizes that his spot on this team is not guaranteed, only his salary is. Coaches don’t put you on the field in a preseason game just to see you half-ass it. You’re there because they want to see something from you. Right now Bowe is a guy that may only see the field near the goal line.
That is just disgusting about Gilbert and Mingo. We may be the worst organization of all time at drafting in the first round.
I think Shelton will be an impressive player.
I am really disappointed we cannot get Irving in Greco’s spot. I believe we will be losing Mack soon and it would be nice to have him side by side one of the best centers in the league.
This team is no doubt going to be bad this year. There is very little hope on offense that we will have success. The games we will win this year will be won based on our defense. It will be the same old classic Browns – 3 defensive turnovers with 1 score and 3 field goals on offense. Just a matter of who’s offense will be worst than ours. Our best chance is in the first 3 games of the season.

Pettine has just spoken to the press regarding the depth chart. To sum it up, it is created by the communications staff not the coaching staff, and Pettine doesn’t even usually read it before he rubber-stamps it.
In other words, the official depth chart isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.
