McCown did not escape the clutches of the NFL concussion protocol early enough to start this weekend.
Honestly, unless our running game and defense miraculously turn themselves around, I’m fine with starting Manziel the rest of the way.
We aren’t making the playoffs. We aren’t developing a star rookie WR. There’s no reason to start a veteran who isn’t good enough to take us to the postseason.
Either Johnny shows us enough growth that QB can be crossed off our shopping list, or he looks like last year and we can pick a QB #1 overall.
Starting McCown and having last year’s #1 pick sitting on the bench truly accomplishes nothing. Johnny has had a year in the NFL. At this point he should be able to give us (at least) league average quarterback play with flashes of greatness. If he can’t do that consistently, we need to move on…but we need to know.
I’m guessing I’ll be done with this game at halftime. Yay – the worst QB in the entire history of the NFL is starting for us. Good job.

I totally disagree @mdp-sack-attack. The way McCown played in the last game was good enough to get us into the playoffs. Yeah, it is a very small sample size, but it certainly deserves another look.
@ice, thinking McCown is good enough to take us to the playoffs is the most Browns fan thing ever. As cynical and depressed as we all (usually) are on these forums, that’s truly beautiful. Thank you.
McCown sucked last year. But what I’m saying is that if you watched him play in the Browns opener you can’t help but be pretty impressed.
He looked “okay” with 8 passing attempts, if that’s what you want to pin your hopes to. I’ll take the sample size of 1600+ attempts over 12 seasons as a more accurate portrayal of his ability.
Even if he were to maintain the 79 QBR he had in his brief play, that’s in the realm of “if we’re great in every other aspect of the game, we can win with that QB”. Outside of punting, what part of this team lives up to that?
