PFF Rank 59 Trey Hendrickson Ranked 8th among potential FA Edge defenders
Of all the players in the free-agent pool, Hendrickson may have made himself the most money here in 2020. His career started with three years of average grades, but he’s getting after the quarterback at a high rate – and the NFL is noticing. Hendrickson was an outstanding player in college at Florida Atlantic, posting back-to-back years of 90.0-plus pass-rush grades. He then showed off his athleticism with above-average marks in the 40-yard dash, three-cone drill and broad jump at the NFL combine, giving him an intriguing profile of production and movement skills. It’s important not to completely overrate his sack totals this season, but Hendrickson has ranked as a mid-level pass-rusher and run defender in his four years in the league.PFF Rank 67 Malik Hooker Ranked 7th among potential FA Safeties
Hooker has dealt with significant injury after significant injury, and this concern existed even before the 2020 season, which was lost to a torn Achilles. He’s never really provided the intended playmaking ability in the middle of the field, but he’s also played in a Colts scheme that has been heavy on two-high safety coverages. Hooker still may be a better fit in a true single-high safety role where he takes good angles on downfield throws. He’s looked out of place when forced into one-on-ones with receivers or when needing to react quickly from two-high alignments. His best season saw him grade at 81.6 in coverage in 2018, though the other 1200 or so snaps have him graded in the mid-60s. He’s worth a look in a new system that could get the most out of his downfield playmaking skill set.PFF Rank 89 Gareon Conley Ranked 17th among potential FA Corners
A former first-round pick, Conley has had his ups and downs, grading out at 64.5 and 64.0 in his two full seasons. He missed all of the 2020 season. Conley is better in man coverage, as he’s graded in the 69th percentile in single coverage compared to just the 37th percentile in zone since entering the league. He’s also forced incompletions on 22.2% of his targets, the second-best rate in the NFL since 2017. Conley is worth a look in a man-heavy system. My Take on: Trey Hendrickson needs to be on a pitch count to be effective it seems. So you resign Claiborn and tender Gustin and you have a nice 4 man rotation. And Hendrickson is asked to do exactly what he did for the Saints only now for the Browns.
My Take on: Malik Hooker when came out IMO was best single high free safties prospect I’d seen in a long time. For some reason the colts as him to be something he really wasn’t all that good at. A dual interchangeable safety in a cover 2 style defense. Which made no sence to me. Personally I believe his to significant injuries were contrtibuted to the turf in Indi and him playing out of position. So for the Browns Hooker would be single high free safety, Delphit would be the nickel safety and Harrison would be the strong safety. With Joeseph being retained for a few years as depth/rotational player and Redwine bening Depth as well. Sendajo is never spoken of again.
My Take on: Gareon Conley, plays well in man and is so so in zone. But forcing incompletions at 1 out of 5 clip is worth a look in man heavy scheme. The other thing he actually has over Ward and obviously Greedy is availabilty. He has started 26 games out of 31 he was available for according to PFR.
In closing: Basically I went out and got 1 high end role player and 2 DB’s that been asked to do things that they were never that good at. And now will be asked to do what they do best in scheme that fits there best abilities. Also the 2 DB’s won’t break the bank contract wise, as for Hendrickson I am not sure what kind of contract he is line for actually as his first few years in the league were basically meh, but this year he cranked up and then some. I’d offer him a nice contract based on the meh production of his 1st few years in the league and offer him some (NAHHHIIICE & Ca Ching) incentives for this years production. With Idea being you wanna get paid like a double digit sackguy, BE a double digit sack guy. Thoughts?
