In no certain order, here is mine.

Zaven Collins, LB, Tulsa Height: 6-4. Weight: 256. Played a LB in a nickel scheme and won mutliple awards as the best defender in collgege football. His production vs competiton in the AAC reminds me of Khalil Mack destroying the MAC the year he came out. IMO though his best comparison in the league of what he is likely to be Tremaine Edmunds.

Jaelen Phillips*, DE, Miami Height: 6-5. Weight: 270. Phillips is a hard one to evaluate IMO. His upside and comparison is the Bosa Brothers. He was of the top recruit in the country and in the same class as Chase Young. The kid has the kind bend burst accleration and strength you want to see from a 1st round starting DE. Now the bad news he had 3 NASTY concussions at UCLA retired for year from football and then cam back and out of retirement and spent 1 year 2019 getting back into football shape, and this past year wreking ACC OT’s. SO he is a very boom or bust pick depending how you evauluate 3 concusions more than 2 years ago medically as a risk. The talent IMO isn’t in question.

Carlos Basham, DE, Wake Forest Height: 6-5. Weight: 280. Bashem is a classic 43 DE. He excells massively at elite level vs the run but is a high motoeffort guy that gets sacks via quickness and power, not with speed. He is the safer bet between him and Phillips and probablly a touch better run defender. He also has more tape to evaluate.

Jaycee Horn*, CB, South Carolina Height: 6-1. Weight: 205. Horn is a predominantly zone or press man corner that plays on the outside vs bigger WR’s. He started off as nickel corner for the game cocks and did not thrive there. Horn has pretty good ball skils. His run support is probabally the weakest part of his game. IMO he is a very good fit for a cover 3 D.

Tyson Campbell*, CB, Georgia Height: 6-2. Weight: 185. Campbell is a predominantly zone or press man corner that plays on the outside vs bigger WR’s. He started off as nickel corner for the game cocks and did not thrive there. Campbell’s ball skils are the greatest. His run support is pretty good though. IMO he is a very good fit for a cover 3 D.

Thats my top 5 defenders I could see being there @26. The Browns currently don’t have on D have a starting NT, or FS. I wouldn’t target ether position with the tyalent in this draft with a 1st rounder. Or maybe better said there aren’t any 1st round NT’s or FS’s in this draft class IMO.

    Thoughts?

I honestly didn’t really follow college at all this year.

I’m kinda hoping we fill our need at linebacker via trade or free agency. Our biggest problem on defense, in my opinion, was out interior defense’s inability to make a pre-snap read. They were hanging back at the snap for an instant or two to watch where the ball was going before getting on their assignment, and generally found themselves a step behind tight ends or running backs. Goodson and Smith were the exceptions, as they’d attack right at the snap, but they were a bit too slow physically to get after athletic players.

I want a linebacker with a few years experience who is still in his prime. I understand that won’t be cheap, but especially if they’re someone we can add to our core for the next few years, I think it’s worthwhile.

Plus, I’m always a big fan of filling needs in free agency, so you can use the draft to upgrade talent by picking the best player available. That’s what established, good teams do, and we are entering the realm of established, good teams.
