If the Browns sign him, IMO the focus of the 26th pick shifts from DE to CB IMO. As a Clowney signing would allow them a year to see what they have in McKinnly and Weaver.

On run downs he is an ASSET. On pass downs in certain situations the Browns could slide Garrett and Clowney inside and put Weaver and Mckinnly on the out side for a NASCAR front. In both situations this allows the front 4 to be more formibale vs the Ravens. And beating the Ravens for the divison title should be the #1 regular season goal. So yeah I am interested.

Disagree. Main focus for the first pick should be LB, regardless of signing Clowney.

They need both, with or without Clowney. Our cupboard is more bare at linebacker, but defensive end is way more important for our system and we regularly rotate three of them during games.

Safety seems pretty set, I’d love to see us address LB and DE with two of our first picks

Say the Browns sign the last 2 guys they have had in for visits, Clowney and Conley. It would mean they would have addressed EVERY level of the defense and truely allow BPA across the board including offense. Not that am beating the drum to draft an offensive player. BUT it would allow fpr a true board to be built and allow for BPA through out the draft and not passing on talent for need. I mean say they sign both an that allows for true board BPA, which I am sure that would something the analytic driven moneyball guys would love. Do you pass on a higher ranked O player for a slighly lower D player in this draft? My answer: You got me, haven’t a clue what I would do.

Just for giggles and chits. Offence at @26 could look like: RB Najee Harris, WR Terrace Marshall Jr, C/G/OT Rashawn Slater.

I mean “IF they go into the draft with the additional projected FA signees the projected D would look something this without draft picks:

Going 2 deep at each position
    DE Garrett, Clowney, McKinley, Weaver
    DT Billings, Richardson, Jackson, Elliot
    SOLB Takki Takki, Wilson
    MLB Walker, Smith
    WOLB Phillips, Lee
    CB Ward, Williams, Hill, Conley
S Jones III, Harrison, Delpit, Redwine

And the cupboard isn’t totally bare….

I get where you’re coming from, but, I’d have a hard HARD time picking a guy in the first round that has no chance to start. And you can’t even argue, any offensive player we would pick would have NO chance to start.

However, if a LB is there that we love, he could instantly be the best player at his position on the team. Not an exaggeration. I’m not opposed to a DE either, if that’s what we decide to do. Even if we sign Clowney, a DE could supplant him as the starter, as Clowney is an average at best, overrated DE.

If there’s a great wide receiver available, there’s merit in taking him. Landry has two years left on his contract, OBJ has three. We can’t keep both for more than a couple years. Draft someone who can back them up this year, and play a bigger role in 2022.

Clowney is an average pass rusher, however he is an ELITE run defender. Which makes him a very good option at LDE. Of all the edge defenders in this years FA class Clowney had the best run defense grade from PFF. when you combine Elite vs the run and average vs thr pass you still get a very good player IMO. Just not an elite one.

I would argue that drafted a stud DE would be a better move than drafting a stud LB.

Getting pressure with the front 4 is key with our defense and Clowney is a short term fix.

It wouldn’t shock me to see them draft a safety in round one. One who can play either SS or FS or even CB because we will be using a lot of 5 DB defenses this year.
