KeymasterAfter the welcome he got upon returning to Cleveland, any chance we get him back? I would love to see it. He’s 40 years old. He’s not going to tackle a guy returning one of his kicks. He’s not going to make any special sneak plays passing the ball. All the guy does is make field goals and kick touchbacks. Who wants Dawson to return?!?

ParticipantAll you will get is diminishing returns on your investment if you sign this guy. Nobody wins against father time.
His day is past and it is time to move on IMO.

ParticipantNo thanks. Coons showed a ton of potential for a rookie. Especially with Tabor sticking around, I’m excited to see if he can add some distance in his sophomore year.

Even Phil endorsed keeping Coons. Said that he’s doing a hell of a lot better than he was in his rookie season.
That said, I’d love to see him come back to retire in Cleveland. You know, before the season starts.

ModeratorCoons was perfect this year.
Blocks aside, which I don’t put on him at all, he never missed.
Not once.
I’m all for one of those sign and retire deals though.
At least he got to play in a superbowl.

ParticipantI realize that other place kickers have been successful after reaching 40, but I’m not sure how much Phil has in left in the tank. Granted, no one knows this stadium as well as Phil does; but Coons has done a fine job in his first season with the Browns. Fix the issues with the people blocking in front of him and Coons will be fine. As much as I like Phil and appreciate what he’s accomplished in Cleveland, I think that an attempt to bring him back – barring a season ending injury to Coons – would be counter-productive and a waste of salary cap money. I wish Phil the very best in continued success, but I think it’ll be somewhere other than in Cleveland.
Am I going mad, or did the word THINK escape your lips? You were not hired for your brains, you hippopotamic landmass!

I would be excited if they weren’t dumb asses and kept a rookie nose tackle in there to block as it failed us 2 times this year.

It was Erving, not Shelton.
To answer the question – only a fool would dump a kicker who’s only FG missed were blocked on the year for a 40 year old. No thanks. Move on. (For the record, I love Phil, the best game memory was being on the 50 in Three Rivers Stadium and watching him kick the game winner as time expired in 1999 against the Steelers)
Freedom!!!

ParticipantThe second one was over Irving, but it was Shelton’s block.

I know, I just like Phil – such a great dude for the city of cleveland and was a highlight of a horrible decade of football.
