ParticipantBILL WUNKLE’S 2016 NFL MOCK DRAFT: CRAZY TRADES VERSION
The roulette wheel is ready to roll; and with baited breath and an eye towards the future, brownsfootballtalk.com’s favorite NFL draft analyst looks to one up last year’s mock where he correctly named the Browns first two picks. It’s becoming apparent to many in the media that the Browns, because they feel there are just too many holes on the roster to draft a QB high in the draft, are most likely to trade down from second overall in order to fill more holes than what their current lot of ten picks can acquire. Thus, this mock will have at least one trade down for Cleveland in order to help out our beloved Brownies. Keep in mind that any resemblance to what actually happens on April 28th is completely incidental. With that said, on with the show.
1: Rams
Jared Goff – QB – California
The only reason you give up two firsts, two seconds and two thirds is to get a quarterback. After much deliberation, they opt for the golden haired Cali guy to blend in with the S0-Cal marketing structure. Many Browns fans – including yours truly – are ecstatic because Carson Wentz is still on the board.
2: Cowboys
Joey Bosa – DE – Ohio State
Trade with Cleveland – in exchange for the second overall pick, the Browns receive the Cowboys first (#4), second (#34) and fourth (#102) round picks this year and a fifth in 2017. Bosa is a prototypical 4-3 DE and Dallas needs a pass rusher to come off the edge.
3: 49ers
Carson Wentz – QB – North Dakota State
Trade with San Diego – The only way to make sure that no other team gets their prized quarterback is to bite the bullet and go get him. In exchange for moving down, the Chargers receive the Niners first (#7), second (#37) and fifth (#143 – which originally belonged to the Chargers – how ironic).
4: Titans
Jalen Ramsey – DB – Florida State
Trade with Cleveland – The Titans wanted Ramsey all along, but didn’t want to pay a defensive back first overall money. The trade will pay off for both teams as the Titans will get a player that can be either a shut down cornerback or ball hawking safety. In exchange for moving down (again) Cleveland receives the Titans first (#15), two seconds (#33 and #43)and a fourth (#113).
5: Jaguars
Myles Jack – OLB – UCLA
In spite of the knee injury, the Jags think that Jack is a player that can transform their defense.
6: Ravens
Laremy Tunsil – OT – Mississippi
One way or another, the Ozzie Newsome was going to take a trench worker here. It just so happens that they get the best OT in the draft. Another option here would be Oregon DE DeForest Buckner.
7: Chargers
DeForect Buckner – DE – Oregon
Trade with 49ers – Speak of the Devil, here he is to bolster the Chargers front line.
8: Eagles
Ezekiel Elliott – RB – Ohio State
DeMarco Murray’s replacement just came into town. The Eagles will also likely make a play for Cleveland’s pick if the Browns really are looking to trade down. However, I think there are other teams that can serve up a nicer package.
9: Bucs
Vernon Hargreaves – CB – Florida
Well, he doesn’t need to travel far from where he played his college ball. Hargreaves instantly secures one side of the field.
10: Giants:
A’Shawn Robinson – DT – Alabama
It seems as if the G-men are always taking linemen early. I don’t know how true that really is, but that seems to be the perception.
11: Bears
Ronnie Stanley – OT – Notre Dame
Whether or not Jay Cutler is a franchise quarterback can be debated until doom’s day; but what cannot be debated is Da-Bears’ need to protect their quarterback’s blind side.
12: Saints
Leonard Floyd – OLB – Georgia
Everyone in football knows that the problem was not on the offensive side of the football. Floyd will provide an immediate edge rush to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
13: Dolphins
Reggie Ragland – ILB – Alabama
The Fins need a linebacker to sure up the middle of the defense. Ragland fits the need and he’s the best player available on the board.
14: Raiders
Andrew Billings – NT – Baylor
The Raiders need help stopping the run, and that starts up front.
15: Browns
Laquon Treadwell – WR – Mississippi
Trade with Titans – No other quarterbacks carry a first round grade, so Sashi and the Harvard committee get their current quarterbacks a legitimate weapon outside.
16: Lions
Kevin Dodd – DE – Clemson
With the Browns screwing up their plans on taking a replacement for the retired Calvin Johnson, the Lions prepare to bolster a defense which ranked 24th overall last season.
17: Falcons
Shaq Lawson – DE – Clemson
The Falcons are still looking for a pass rusher, and the think they’ve found one in Lawson. Tiger bookends go off the board back-to-back.
18: Colts
Jack Conklin – OT – Michigan State
The Colts really need to protect Andrew Luck and keep him upright if they have any plans on getting back to the playoffs this season.
19: Bills
Robert Nkemdiche – DT – Mississippi
This is just the kind of move that Rex Ryan would want to make. It’s brilliant if it works, but woefully bad if it fails.
20: Jets
Hunter Henry – TE – Arkansas
I don’t know if the Jets need a TE, but he’s the BPA regardless of position.
21: Redskins
Chris Jones – DT – Mississippi State
Sometimes you get lucky and the BPA is in a position of need.
22: Texans
Mackensie Alexander – CB – Clemson
Another Tiger goes off the board in round one. That’s three so far.
23: Vikings
Jarran Reed – DT – Alabama
I want to give then an OT or a WR, but it’s a bit of a stretch here.
24: Bengals
Sheldon Rankins – DT – Louisville
Still a bit of a stretch to take a receiver here.
25: Steelers
Vernon Butler – NT – Louisiana Tech
A stretch? Maybe, but he fills a need in a HUGE way.
26: Seahawks
Emanuel Ogbah – DE – Oklahoma State
He’s a 4-3 DE and he fits their scheme perfectly.
27: Packers
Hassan Ridgeway – DT – Texas
Their top three needs are all on defense.
28: Chiefs
Josh Doctson – WR – TCU
They need a complimentary receiver for lining up opposite Jeremy Macklin. This kid is a nice receiver.
29: Cardinals
Jonathan Bullard – DT – Florida
Two of the Cards’ top three needs are defensively.
30: Panthers
Noah Spence – DE- Eastern Kentucky
The former Ohio State player got his act together and is now a first round draft pick.
31: Broncos
Cody Whitehair – OG – Kansas State
Granted, it’s not the OT or QB that many were hoping for, but this pick still fills a need.
OTHER BROWNS PICKS:
32: Paxton Lynch – QB – Memphis
33: Will Fuller – WR – Notre Dame
34: Jordan Jenkins – LB – Georgia
43: Joshua Garnett – OG – Stanford
65: Ryan Kelly – C – Alabama
99: Shawn Oakman – DE – Baylor
101: DJ White – CB – Georgia Tech
113: Darius Latham – DT – Indiana
138: Sean Davis – S – Maryland
141: Cyrus Jones – CB – Alabama
172: Kyle Murphy – OT – Stanford
173: Victor Ochi – DE/OLB – Stony Brook
176: Josh Ferguson – RB – Illinois
223: David Morgan – TE – Texas San Antonio
Well, that wraps it up for this edition. I’ll have my final mock draft posted sometime next week before the Draft. I don’t know how many rounds I’ll go, but it’ll be at least three. This is Bill Wunkle signing off from the padded cell. Have a good night, everybody!

KeymasterHoly trades batman! You really think Sashi will be as afraid of making a pick as Mangini was?
Lynch in the 2nd round is nucking futs. He goes top 10. He compares favorably to Joe Flacco (18th overall) in every category.
Then again, who am I to doubt the draft guru?

ParticipantIf we pick Shawn Oakman then the entire staff best be fired right after the pick.
He was arrested yesterday for sexual assault. (Not just accused, but actually arrested)

KeymasterNot sticking up for criminals, but being arrested is just the next step after being accused. It does not mean you’re guilty.
Also that bring’s Soup’s firing of the entire staff to 200. Quite a milestone!

ParticipantHey, Ice, you know that I have a TON of respect for your opinions; and I truly appreciate your respect for mine. But as I stated it in this mock, there’s no other QB in this draft that carries a first round grade other than Jared Goff and Carson Wentz – and my preference is not in that order (as you already well know). Now, does that mean that one or two more won’t be taken? Absolutely not. In fact, this league is so QB driven that some team may hit the panic button and take Lynch in the top ten just like you said. For every Peyton Manning, there’s a Ryan Leaf . . . for every Blake Bortles, there’s a Johnny Manziel . . . for every Andrew Luck, there’s a Robert Griffin III . . . and so on and so forth. If you had tp put cold hard cash on it, who do you think the Christian Ponder of this year’s draft is going to be?
Jon Gruden – who’s never met a quarterback he didn’t like – said “I’d be surprised if Christian Hackenberg made it out of the first round.” Does ANYONE that contributes to this website honestly believe what he’s saying? If they do, then they’re blindly drinking the Kool-Aid.
By the way . . . since Brian Hoyer was released by the Texans, I’m completely shocked that I haven’t heard ESPNCleveland’s Tony Grossi waxing poetically about re-kindling that man crush. We’ve all seen that movie before, and it doesn’t end well for Brian.

Also that bring’s Soup’s firing of the entire staff to 200. Quite a milestone! You don’t touch him with a 5 million foot pole (I’m assuming Wunkle did his mock prior to the info hitting yesterday or he missed it which doesn’t matter for a mock draft – but if it becomes reality – it’s a huge red flag that the front office is clueless after Manziel/Gordon/Bryant):
More than a week after being accused of sexual assault, former Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman was arrested Wednesday.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the 24-year-old Oakman was “waiting to be booked into jail” on a sexual assault charge, according to the Waco Tribune. The arrest comes after a female Baylor student accused Oakman of sexually assaulting her in the early morning hours of April 3 after the two left a nightclub together.
Police records say the two returned to Oakman’s residence, where she said he “forcibly removed” her clothing, “forced” her onto a bed and assaulted her. Oakman, Baylor’s all-time sack leader and an NFL prospect, told police the sexual contact was consensual.
From the Tribune:
Waco police searched his James Avenue residence on April 3 looking for evidence to support the woman’s claims that Oakman sexually assaulted her between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. that same day.
A police affidavit for the search warrant said police were looking for clothing the woman left behind at Oakman’s duplex, earrings, blood, semen, bodily fluids, hair, skin cells, DNA, bedsheets and other items.
Court documents indicate officers seized two comforters, a fitted sheet and a flat sheet from Oakman’s bedroom. The woman went to the hospital after the alleged assault and was examined by a sexual assault nurse examiner, according to the court records.
The 6-foot-9, 275-pound Oakman, who graduated in December, was a standout defensive lineman for the Bears, registering a combined 84 tackles, 34 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks in his junior and senior seasons. Oakman landed at Baylor in 2012 after beginning his career at Penn State, where he was dismissed for violating team rules.
Two other former Baylor players, Tevin Elliott and Sam Ukwuachu, have been convicted of sexual assault in recent years. Additionally, a report emerged Wednesday saying the school waited two years to investigate a claim against two players. Tight end Tre’Von Armstead and practice player Myke Chatman were accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2013. Armstead was dismissed from the program in September 2015, while Chatman left Baylor in 2012 to play at FCS Sam Houston State.
The school has been heavily criticized for its handling of these cases and hired a law firm to conduct a review of its policies and procedures.

ParticipantIt’s a neat trick getting 32, 33, and 34, but to call it wishful thinking would be generous. I’m of the mindset that we need to get a QB in this draft, but if we trade down and still get Lynch at the top of the second, I’d be ecstatic.
Crazy trades aside, I haven’t seen 1 draft where Will Fuller gets out of the first as you have it. Assuming he’s picked, though, I’d be thrilled to get Michael Thomas, who you have still available. I think he’s underrated going into this draft.
One last comment, since I am a Buckeyes fan, one thing about your draft jumped out at me. Where are Taylor Decker, Darron Lee, and Eli Apple? Basically every mock out there as those 3 all as round 1 picks, except yours. Eli Apple, I think, is overrated simply because he wore scarlet and gray, but the other 2 seem to be a glaring omission, to me.
Anyways, nice job on the mock. I look forward to seeing Shawn Oakman break Soup in half for talking bad about Shawn Oakman.

KeymasterI hate hate HATE Connor Cook. The guy wasn’t even the captain of his football team. He’s not a leader. All the physical tools but his mindset puts him as a late 2nd/early 3rd prospect at best. I’d look at him in the 3rd round. I’m sure he’ll go before that though.

ModeratorThe guy wasn’t even the captain of his football team. He’s not a leader. All the physical tools but his mindset puts him as a late 2nd/early 3rd prospect at best.
I think that a lot of the reports/opinions/to do being made of Connor cooks leadership are widely exaggerated. I think that when he wasn’t voted as a captain, some people took that as “oh, well he must not be a good leader” and then it was repeated over and over and over again until it started being believed as truth and fact. D’antonio has come out and said more than once that it wasn’t the case at all, and that his leadership wasn’t in question. Of course though, no one wants to listen to or hear that. That story/thought/opinion came out at the beginning of the year and stayed the entire season.
Now, that’s not me endorsing Cook as a QB at all, I just don’t like seeing a guy railroaded for what appears to be no real reason at all.
As for him as a QB, he’s a Northeast Ohio kid, went to Walsh Jesuit and grew up a Browns fan. He’s a Rose Bowl MVP, and one of the most decorated QB’s in Big Ten History. I wouldn’t throw something at my TV if we draft him.

That’s not to say he’s a bad player, but there’s nothing to make me think he could be a great player at the next level. I see him as being a high end backup, where there’s always some team that thinks they can take him to the next level, but he never takes that step. Kind of like a Kyle Orton. Nothing technically wrong, just doesn’t have “IT”.

None of that means anything – the guy in 3 years starting had a high completion % for a year in 2013 – it was a whopping 58.7%. It went DOWN each year.
vs. Alabama – 48% completion 0 TDs and 2 ints.
Taking him prior to round 6 = dumb.

KeymasterNope. Until we have a franchise QB we should be drafting one every single draft, even if it’s a 7th round pick.

Lol, of course it doesn’t. Clearly what Conor Cook should have been doing at Michigan State was working on his degree in Underwater Basket Weaving because it was obvious to everyone with eyes that over the 3 years he was playing football and leading his team to Big Ten titles and vying for national championships that he really had absolutely no clue how to actually play football. It’s amazing that he was even allowed to be out on the field. Right?
Taking him prior to round 6 = dumb.

KeymasterBefore the draft, a lot of people questioned JaCheeseburger Russell’s work ethic. His coach praised his work ethic and said it’s all just smoke.
Before the draft, a lot of people questioned Manziel’s passion for football as opposed to fame. His coach praised him as one of the most competitive players he’d ever coached.
Before the draft, a lot of people questioned LenWhale White’s ability to stay in shape. His coach praised him as a hard worker.
Where there’s smoke, there’s often fire. Cook’s leadership has been challenged often. Can you name a starting NFL QB who was not the captain of his college team as the starter? I can’t think of any. For a QB to NOT be named captain is significant ESPECIALLY FOR A 4 YEAR STARTER!

You mentioned that his coach said the statements about him were false but no one wanted to listen.

Now I see why you are so obsessed with what he did here – he did it against OSU in 2013. You know, his first year starting – where he regressed the next 2 years. You keep saying he’s one of the most decorated QBs in big 10 history. Does he paint his nails or something? 58.7 – that’s the guys HIGHEST completion rate in a year. He ended as a senior at 56%. Oh joy.
None of that means anything

ParticipantSpeaking of Jamarcus Russell . . . one NFL scout uses him in comparing Cardale Jones to another QB – albeit a “poor man’s version”. If Miggy-Figgy will apply himself to learn an offense and stabilize his mechanics (because they’re all over the place from throw to throw) he could make something of himself. However, I think that the pressure to succeed will manage to get the best of him – especially if he’s drafted by his hometown team. Most unfortunate indeed.
