The Cleveland Browns are hiring former Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo as offensive coordinator to replace Kyle Shanahan, ESPN has confirmed.

John DeFilippo, who coached the Raiders’ quarterbacks at one point, will get to run the Browns’ offense and try to mold Johnny Manziel.DeFilippo impressed when he interviewed for the job last year and spoke with Browns coach Mike Pettine again last week after Shanahan resigned.
Fox Sports initially reported the news. DeFilippo’s contract has not been completed yet but is expected to be by the end of the week, a source told ESPN.
DeFilippo has never called plays at the NFL level but did so for two seasons at San Jose State under now-Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre, who says DeFilippo has “great ideas and is excellent with quarterbacks.”
DeFilippo’s biggest challenge, unless the Browns say otherwise, will be helping mold Johnny Manziel at the pro level. Manziel struggled in his two NFL starts this season, finishing with a 51.4 passer rating (18-of-35 for 175 yards, two interceptions and a 51.4 passer rating).
But DeFilippo did well with Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who threw for more than 3,200 yards with 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as a rookie. The Browns showed interest in several coordinator candidates, including former Bears coach Marc Trestman, former NFL head coach Chan Gailey, Bills offensive assistant Jim Hostler and Jets running backs coach Anthony Lynn.

If his task really is to mold Manziel. When do we start the thread searching for the Browns new regime after everyone is fired following the 1-15 season we will witness?

So . . . basically the Browns are settling for an “up-and-comer” that will pose no immediate threat to Mike Pettine as his successor.

Haslam came in and structured a poor organization where he calls the shots on players. That Manziel pick will haunt us for years. It makes me hate the Cowboys scouts even more for them talking Jerry Jones out of that pick. No one wants to work with him. This guy sees it as a step up from QB coach and it gets him experience for his next job as an OC elsewhere. We know this story. Next year we’ll have a new regime.

Lets look at the bright side. This guy has no experience to hang on to, so chances are good he’ll run the system that Pettine tells him to run; i.e. zone blocking and run heavy.
He also did decent work with Carr.
But the best thing is that he isn’t BFF texting buddies with Manziel like Loggains was. I don’t think he’ll show any loyalty to Manziel.
This is how I look at it – he already has 1 strike against him for being our offensive coordinator. Only a dumb ass would take this job. So 2 more strikes which should happen by week 8, Pettine will be calling the plays. And then everyone will get fired at the end of week 17. New regime, and new qb’s again.

Defilippo is gonna say all the right things about ‘getting the best players on the field’, ‘using the talent available’, ‘getting the most out of every player’…. blah blah blah. When a team has NO options at QB, how do you win a game? If Hoyer leaves we’ll have the worst QB depth chart the Browns have had in a decade, and that’s saying a lot.

You know this guy will have zero success and will be fired after next year if they play Manziel. Manziel is the worst pick we have ever made hands down.

I think the signing was a ‘sign’ once again that no one wants to come here…at least no one that values their reputation as a coordinator/coach/etc.
Still like Farmer and Pettine, but all signs still point to the same ol’ Browns (since the return)…
Sign some staff, fire some staff, rinse and repeat.
Let’s hope we find a diamond in the rough because we all know how that has been working out for us.
