I think yesterday really proved it (as if we needed more proof) our two most glaring needs on this team are center and right tackle. Hopefully there will be two guys worthy in round 1.
Improving the oline will improve the defense by virtue of extending drives and scoring points.
When the opposition is nearly taking hand offs that’s a problem. I think then is when we can truly evaluate the QB position. If we have a QB in round 2 we like I have no issue with that. But this oline is beyond terrible. It must be the focus. I think safety is our other glaring hole.
If for some reason we love a QB first overall then pick #2 and 3 better be C and Rt.

November 21, 2016 at 12:47 pm #6646Dawg E. DawgParticipantUntil we have a QB, that will always be our biggest need. I like Kesslar, but I’m not convinced he’s a franchise qb, so I’d put QB as our biggest need by default. Is there a QB at no. 1 that we should take? That, I’m not so sure about.
After QB, center followed by DB, and in not even gonna bother specifying safety or corner cuz we need both. Then comes RT. I only put that lower because we have Coleman and Drango that could potentially develop into a starting RT. At safety a DB, we have junk starters with junk depth. Maybe Erving has a prayer for next year, but I’m skeptical about that even.

Then OL automatically becomes your biggest need over QB. If you can’t protect him then your screwed (Tom Brady on this team would look like he aged out of the game). Dak Prescott has 3 1st round picks on the line ahead of him. It’s evident from watching him that if he were on our team – he’d have 10+ picks and 3 TDs like any normal mid round rookie would. It’d be a shit show of epic proportions. Now though – he’s looking really good because he gets time to develop behind that oline and brought around the right way.
I think Kessler can develop – but again – if they see someone that’s surefire they love – grab that QB – but one of them 1st round picks has to be a center. It can’t be anything else.
The big frustration to me overall is that Kessler has been very good. He wasn’t even supposed to play this year. You know the biggest difference between Kessler and McCown? Since McCown is a vet the playbook opens a lot more. They are still bringing Kessler along.
People keep ripping on Kesslers arm. He was 2 for 3 on deep throws yesterday. The interception – the DB pushed Coleman while the ball was in the air. It was PI (either way it would not have been caught as it was underthrown). Now look at Big Ben yesterday. He was 1 for 2 on deep throws. One of them wound up 15+ yards away from the WR due to the wind – he’s got one of the strongest arms in the NFL. The reason all they did was 5 yard passes was due to the insane wind.
One day we have to pick a QB and stick with them. If you told me a 3rd round rookie would be playing beind the worst line in the NFL and in 8 games would have 6 TDs to 2 ints – I’d tell you you are insane. I’d be guessing 3 TDs to 10+ picks.
We need to focus on that o-line (and Coleman needs to focus on the jugs machine).

November 21, 2016 at 1:48 pm #6650ShooterModeratorAll we need is a Center, RT, Guard, SS, FS, Linebacker, D-line, QB, and CB.
Aside from that we look pretty good.
November 21, 2016 at 2:29 pm #6651DawgPoundDudeParticipantFrom certain reports, I guess they’re big on the QB from UNC. Something like 70% accuracy, 25/4 touchdown/interception ratio…hold up, I’ll look for him…
November 21, 2016 at 2:31 pm #6652Dawg E. DawgParticipantI understand your point of view, and I’m not saying we don’t need at least 2 o lineman, cuz we do. But let’s not act like Dan is solely a product of the line.
Look at the Cowboys prior to this year. Even with their line, they’ve been struggling because Romo keeps getting hurt, and they couldn’t get a decent backup. they tried Weeden and Cassel and others, but you just can’t overcome a bad QB.
It’s not really worth arguing about. Center and QB are needs 1a and 1b anyway you slice it, and it’s an F’n joke because since the return we’ve drafted 4 1st round QBs and 3 1st round centers. 7 1st round picks and they’re still our biggest needs.

It’s bullshit. How do I know? It came from Jason LA Canfora. I’m more connected to the NFL than he is. Hell, my 11 year old nephew is more connected than him.

I love this. It’s so Brownsy.
November 21, 2016 at 4:22 pm #6656MDP Sack AttackParticipantI’d take a left tackle who can play on the right side until Joe hangs up his cleats or slows down. I’d prefer to bring in a Veteran at center who knows the NFL game and can make the protection calls. I’d prefer a safety with our other first rounder. Beyond that I’d absolutely take a QB in the first two rounds.
November 21, 2016 at 10:12 pm #6668mike barnesParticipantAt least if we had a young QB whose arm talent didn’t require such an arc to get to the wide outs the fans might have some hope even thru all the losing this year, now we’re even further behind the curve. When you’ve got the chance to grab a top tier qb you got to take it period! After QB o-line cause ours is a joke Irving is a bust Greco is past it the rest just stinks other than Thomas and we’ve wasted his best years. I know people will cry BPA come next spring and I do understand but no player will turn this thing around long term unless it’s a QB.

November 21, 2016 at 10:30 pm #6676IceKeymasterYou know what I’ve learned after 10+ years of arguing football with you guys? There is no order to drafting them. You don’t wait until you get a good QB before drafting a good O-line. And you don’t wait until your O-line is in place to look for a QB. You look for both all the time. When both are good, then you’re a team that’s going to be in the playoffs. Tom Brady behind our line would be hamburger. The Cowboys awesome line with Weeden at QB is a joke.
November 22, 2016 at 7:05 am #6678DawgstyleParticipantAs was proven with Alex Mack and Mitchell Schwartz, you can spend as many picks as you want on the o-line, they’re not going to stay, in fact no one, not WR, not RB, not even defenders, are going to stay if you don’t have a franchise QB that can get them to the playoffs. The only thing the Cleveland Browns can offer a free agent right now is money. Unfortunately, we’re not the only team with money.

You can’t keep players without a QB that provides hope for the future. But, you also can’t go picking Jamarcus Russell over Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, and about 5 other future HOFers just because you need a QB. It’s a pickle. The only thing that tips the schale for me is when you say biggest DRAFT need, and that pushes it to QB.
You just can’t get a QB outside the draft. It doesn’t happen. And if you say Drew Brees post your address with it so I can drive to you my house and punch you in person, because that was A.) a once in a lifetime fluke, and B.) he wouldn’t have picked the Browns as a FA. Good QBs universally come from the draft.
That said, Canfora may be full of shit (ok. We know he is), but there may something to this Trubisky. 6′ 3″, 220 lbs, 70% completion, >8.5 YPA. He’s from Mentor, and has said if he could play for any team it would be the Browns. I haven’t watched ANY film on him, but he checks a lot of boxes on paper.

On that, we can all agree. However, it’s been reported that we had scouts present during the game, and while I don’t know who or what is playing for UNC (here’s a hint, I rarely watch college games, unfortunately), this might actually be one of those “safe assumption” reports. With all the time between now and the draft, this doesn’t look like a smoke & mirrors play. If they were at the game, they were watching somebody. With interest.
Now, in terms of our line, is anyone aware of any decent centers or safeties hitting free agency next season? Because that might be the only way to get a decent player or two…assuming we go the QB route in the draft. Not the preferred route, but we need to pad our ass before we fall on another 0-16 season, and that may be our only hope.
November 22, 2016 at 12:27 pm #6682soupParticipantThe issue with this draft is EJ Manuel would be the best QB coming out – that’s how bad it is. We either have to bank on Kessler/RG3 for another year – or have a round 2 target in mind at QB

November 22, 2016 at 2:53 pm #6685IceKeymasterI’m no fan of RG3, but between him and Kessler RG3 might be better positioned to compliment the skills of Pryor and Coleman.

November 22, 2016 at 4:29 pm #6689soupParticipantNovember 22, 2016 at 5:03 pm #6690DawgstyleParticipantYou have to let the scouting process and combine play out before you can comment on the talent available at QB in the draft, and even then it’s not a sure bet (Russell Wilson, Dak Prescott, Tom Brady, Derek Carr etc.). I think Trubisky is an interesting prospect and may well garner a first round grade by the time all is said and done. His completion percentage and low INT to TD ratio seem to fit the bill for what Hue likes (he’s like a bigger, stronger armed Cody Kessler that isn’t afraid to throw the ball downfield).
While there is no Peyton Manning in this draft, there may well be a Drew Brees, Rich Gannon, Joe Flacco, or Matt Stafford.

The only thing RG3 can compliment is the nurse, for looking after him while he’s laid up in the hospital recovering from the latest “whatever” he just shattered, tore, stretched, snapped, pulled, dislocated, lacerated, punctured, hyperextended, punctured or concussed.
The only thing RG3 excels at is throwing wildly inconsistent laser beams all over the field with what appears to be no sense of direction whatsoever until inevitably a random yet important part of his body bursts with the power of a supernova and he hits IR faster than Usain Bolt can win a Gold medal.
So, no.
