I agree with you…on some level. Continuity is very important (hence all the problems we’ve had), however, there must be some reason that their moving on from Horton, and I’m sure the record is about 75% of it. Hue must have seen something (other than bad defense) he didn’t like, and moving on right now is probably the smartest move that can be made.

And in terms of running on ice, you’re right, we’ve been Scooby-Doo running for years with this shit. However, both of those names that could replace Horton are pretty big names, and both have sucked air at a Super Bowl.

I honestly don’t think this is one of those “a head has to roll” situations, I think it’s more of a “we need to do better” situation. And if it’s been identified that Horton isn’t the guy Hue was hoping for, then I personally don’t see a problem with this change.

As I said, due to Haslam change will be a constant. 2-14 next year. New regime in 2018. More of the same trash and stupidity. Hortons defense didn’t cause the offense to suck all year and not score points or get 1st downs. Against the Steelers in the final game we missed a FG, refused to run from the 2, threw a pick inside the 5 and fumbled inside the 5. Against Baltimore week 2 the defense didn’t allow a blocked FG or throw a pick under 2 minutes in the half leading to opposition’s points. Just plain stupid to fire him. Major fail again that makes this past draft with Ogbah and Nassib useless. Kirksey great year is meaningless in a 4-3 as is the signing of Demario Davis. This move rendered every defensive part of the off season worthless.

Although I have to be honest, as I was writing my post, I was thinking to myself, “I wonder what Soups ‘the sky is falling’ response to this is going to be?”

It’s………it’s exactly what I thought it was.

Tell me where I’m wrong. Every part of rookie development is gone if we switch to a 4-3. They have to learn a completely different defense with different language and different responsibility. We are starting over on defense. That’s a fact. All these changes are why we keep sucking. We’ve yet to try continuity. Another front office fail

Shooter, I don’t see anything resembling a silver lining with this. Changing coaches all the time is why we sucked so bad this year in the first place. We need to have patience.

The fact that we’re going after guys that two vastly different defenses shows that we give 0 fucks about our players and what they’re suited for. If we somehow get Wade, I’d be alright with it. But at 70, why in the world would he want to come to Cleveland for what will likely be a 1 year stint trying to make a house out of popsicle sticks??

Hue was supposed to be a guy with a plan. He’d been around the league long enough to have connections, and he knew who he wanted to bring into get the job done. 1 year later and the guy he brought in is canned. Where’s the bright side?

I understand continuity, and I get it, but here’s a stark reality: We were abysmal on defense. Horrific. Embarrassing. A complete farce. Shockingly inept.

You can’t have that. All season was like watching an arena league defense. That is beyond unacceptable.

Do I think Horton is a decent coach? Yes. Do I think he got a raw deal in being given a shit roster to work with and told make something from nothing? Yes. Was he set up for failure? Pretty much.

That said, they still could have been better.

Further, wouldn’t you agree that someone like Greg Williams or Wade Phillips would be a massive upgrade? I sure as shit do.

It’s about improving. Getting better. Becoming a real football team. I have no issues with it.

So DeAngelo Williams running over Jamie Collins for a TD is Hortons fault?

He had to resort to Ed Reynolds and Transom Williams playing safety.

He was given 2 rookie ends.

If we stay in a 3-4 then no, it’s not going backwards. But give Phillips and Williams last year’s roster and we finish in the same place.

Shooter, your question isn’t as straight forward to answer as it looks. I’ll say this: Yes, Gregg Willimas or Wade Phillips would be an upgrade over Horton. Based on their respective resumes, I don’t think that can be reasonably argued. BUT, I have to huge problems with this:

1.) Horton was brought in just last year by Hue. If he wanted a big name like Phillips or Williams, LAST year was the time to get them, not this year. Obviously they weren’t available, but my point is if Horton can’t do the job, Hue should have known that last year. He’s been around the league long enough that he should have known what he was getting in his DC. A shit year with a shit roster shouldn’t be a big surprise that changes his mind.

2.) There’s no method their coaching search. Williams and Phillips, while both successful, are 2 very different coaches, with very different personalities, and very different coaching schemes. If it was between Phillips and say Romeo Crennel, then I wouldn’t be upset because their similar coaches. But this? I just don’t get it.

Sometimes you have to play the hand you are dealt. There’s not a can’t miss prospect at QB in this year’s draft. Do you still draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round? Of course. Do you feel about taking a QB in the first next year because you took a QB in the 2nd or 3rd last year? Absolutely not. Same with Horton. Best we could get, better is available. I agree with Shooter, make the upgrade and don’t lose any sleep over it.

I would welcome Gregg Williams with open arms. First, it is much easier to draft for the 4-3 than it is for the 3-4. With the first pick in the 2017 draft, Myles Garrett plays at his natural position of DE instead of OLB in a 3-4. Second, the Raven, Steelers and Bengals have brutal defenses that have made our “bend but break” crap 3-4 defenses look as weak as the concept itself if. I like that williams wanted to hurt players. I like that Big Ben, Flacco and Dalton are going to have to worry about getting hurt if Williams is our coordinator. I’m tired of honorable Patsies. If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying. Gregg Williams is the killer we need to compete in the AFC North.

As for Wade Phillips? Nah. His best years are behind him. He’s been to the top. We need someone young, hungry and a little dirty. Phillips would keep us the noble losers of the AFC North (let’s be honest, we don’t have the kind of talent he’s used to coaching). Look at what Ray Lewis and T sizzle did to us. What Troy Polamalu and James Harrison did to us. What Vontaze Burfict and Pacman Jones did to us. It’s time the AFC North fears the Cleveland Browns, and when they go low, we knock them on their asses and make them pay, tit for tat.

Just my 2 cents. That’s my vision for our defense.

my arguement has been consistent with horton –

    1 poor tackling – inexcusable
2 unprepared – poor coverage communication
3 zero halftime adjustments all year round
    4 pass rush nonexistent

there are lots of teams with injuries. enough for claiming injuries all year. these 4 things i pointed out along with record and defensive ranking is was canned.

i agree with the firing 100%

    Hue Jackson is a loser.
