Because according to these guys, we’re going to have a shit ton of it. To the tune of 107 million. By far and away the most in the league.

I mean, holy hell. 107 million!!!!

Yup, read that earlier. And good news, they’re spending some of that on Jamie Collins this weekend, which will keep that franchise tag open.

Let’s hope smart moves like this keep happening.

I’m gonna go ahead and point out the obvious. We have the money to address any and all holes through Free Agency, if we want to. While you can’t get top tier talent, you can get solid starters at literally every position. Safety, DE, DT, LB, OT, C, and so on. We have a metric shit ton of cap space.

But the one position we CAN’T address via free agency is QB. Cant be done. They aren’t available. The only guys that hit the market are journeyman backups and overpriced, stop gap vets, and they aren’t worth the trouble. All we would end up with is another McCown or RG3 or Brian Hoyer or Seneca Wallace, or Jake Delhomme… it’s pointless.

I don’t want to derail this into another QB draft thread, I just want to point out what we can and CANT accomplish with that cap space. Im excited at the prospect of adding a guy like Eric Berry (though I don’t think there’s anyway he actually becomes a FA), but not a guy like Shaun Hill.

Using that money to buy starters would be idiotic. That’s a recipe for failure. You build that space to resign your own and build through the draft adding mid level free agents with the cap. Grabbing 1 starter that’s high is okay as long as they are young, adding multiple and we become Jacksonville

    Freedom!!!

I’m mostly with you there Soup. I would say that bringing one “good” free agent on each side of the ball would do us some good. In areas of need, of course…so pretty much bringing in anyone would be an upgrade.

Fact is, we are gonna have to spend money any way you slice it. We have to use up so much every couple of years, right? As long as we don’t end up like the Chargers…but if it’s something our office seems to be good at, it’s financial planning.

Either way, expect at least one big name this year.

First priority for that cap space is to keep any players that we drafted that are worth keeping.
    Second priority is free agents.

    Just my opinion.

I’m in full agreement that re-signing your own players is the #1 priority of cap money. That said, with 107 million available, we can easily do that AND sign however many/whoever we wanted in FA. We can afford it, easily.

I would love to see a splash in Free Agency now. Grab the best safety available. Grab the best 2 O-linemen available. Improve this friggin roster overnight. Couple it with a great draft, the Browns could really be a position to stop sucking.

    Stephon Gilmore CB 26 BUF
    Chris Baker DE 29 WAS

    Tyson Alualu DT 29 JAC

A lot of these guys won’t ever reach FA, through deals with their current teams or franchise tags. That said, if Alshon Jeffrey and Eric Berry somehow make it, they could be huge additions. Alshon has a realistic chance, but Berry probably won’t be a FA. There are some decent young corners there as well.

    Just food for thought.

BTW, to further the point about just how much space we have:

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/cap/

Our 2016 salary, according to that, was about $130 million. We have $107 million in SPACE. That’s our entire 2016 team minus Joe Thomas and Joe Haden. And that’s only if we include all the dead cap we got off the books last year (Dwayne Bowe, looking at you here). Mingo, Whitner, Manziel, Dansby, John Hughs, they all had pretty large dead money figures.

We don’t have any big names leaving that’ll fetch good compensatory picks, so I don’t see any reason not to spend the money and get some guys in that can actually play.

If that’s the case, then now is a good time to gamble on the guys who have shown promise that are early in their rookie contracts. Guys like Duke, Shelton, etc. Sign them to fat front loaded contracts with plenty of escalators.

Shelton and Johnson are both under contract through 2018. Shelton has an additional option for 2019, being a 1st round pick.

I’m all for keeping our guys, but we don’t have many guys to spend money on.

First of all . . . With Jamie Collins already re-signed, we need to re-sign Terrelle Pryor. Of the free agent list . . . Give me Alshon Jeffery, Stephon Gilmore and either Luke Joeckel or Chance Warmack. Actually, I think Warmack would be an ideal RG acquisition because he’s a mauler.

Am I going mad, or did the word THINK escape your lips? You were not hired for your brains, you hippopotamic landmass!

Except for Joeckel, those were exactly the names I picked out of the list. Im and, I have nothing against Joeckel, just don’t know him too well. unfortunately, I don’t see a way of addressing center via FA.

The first 2 guys who stood out to me on that list were Joeckel and Warmack.

I have no problem buying an O-line. Absolutely none.

    Still need a center though.
