Seriously though, I agree with everything you said. I’d also like to add that Tank Carder (see, I just pulled an Uncle Bill bold-the-guy’s- name there) needs to stay the hell out of the Mike spot- Joe Schobert would be ideal to run there. Danny Shelton has to get a lot more nasty for this defense to succeed. Because of those two guys, we got gashed for big runs. Yes, sometimes big runs happen, and sometimes one line beats the other line, but it should never be due to guys not doing their job. That needs to be cleaned up. However, this was the first preseason game. There’s still plenty of time to get shit figured out.

One guy we didn’t get to see on defense- Jabril Peppers. According to media reports, he’s starting to play with the first-teamers, and playing lights-out. We’ll likely see him come Monday.

Back on offense, I would like to see less mistakes by wide receivers. Kenny Britt looked as if he was playing lazy, and as you said, screwed Brock out of a touchdown. Rannell Hall has gotten praise for a decent camp, and didn’t have a terrible game, but dropped 2 (I think). Jordan Payton showed great concentration on his game-winner. Ricardo Louis has all the tools to be a damn beast. And Corey Coleman may well prove himself worthy of his draft position.

I’d like to see more of the run game, but I have a feeling that during the preseason, due to the unsettled quarterback situation, there’s going to be a lot more passes than runs. Which, since the record doesn’t matter, is probably a good thing. Hopefully we achieve a better balance when we face the Steelers.

I can probably name off a few other things, but I think I typed enough.

YES Soup, we shouldn’t have allowed it. I agree. But damn, I’ve said it earlier, I’ll say it again, and Im not going to bother the next time it’s brought up: when individual players don’t do what’s expected of them, it leaves the entire defense vulnerable. It is absolutely something that needs to be fixed, and I’m hoping that it DOES get fixed by the next game.

It’s just not something I’m going to view with a bureaucratic eye…this defense is playing with the belief that they are going to be dominant. Spout the numbers off all you like, a winning attitude is just as important.

They’re playing with a different swag to them. You can see it in the body language, the way they move, the aggressiveness, it’s there, there’s no denying that it’s there and that a change has been made.

Will it translate? We’ll see. I’m confident.

This team looks twice as good as they did 1 year ago. Perhaps 3 times as good.

That translates to 2-3 wins this year. The offense looked VERY sloppy to me no matter who was behind center. Despite all the draft picks thrown at the WR position it looks bad. With certain notable exceptions (rhymes with Shmerving) the line looked improved but not great. I imagine that’ll change when Joe gets in the lineup.

Hey, Soup…I’m going to sum this up.

1) Horton was here last year because he was the fat kid in the dodgeball game. You’ll note that he still is not employed. Hue very likely never wanted him to begin with. I doubt he ever got a phone call when, what, five different teams (a guess) had a new head coach for this season? My guess is there’s a very good reason for that. What are you trying to do, convince me that Horton’s proven track record should have kept him on? I wouldn’t have been exactly shocked if we did, but I can guarantee Williams was hired before Horton’s pink slip ever reached his hand.

2) ONE GAME. And a PRESEASON game at that. Are we to base the ENTIRE FUTURE of GREGG WILLIAMS with the CLEVELAND BROWNS based on the very first time that this team has gotten to face another opponent? They were supposed to have EVERY SINGLE LITTLE THING figured out, right? Is that what you’re saying?

3) I’ve already agreed that this is shit that needs patching up. SO WHY THE HELL DO YOU KEEP QUOTING ME AND ASKING THE SAME QUESTIONS? Are you saying Williams should be fired immediately? Or that we should be inserting Charlie Frye in at MLB? YES Soup, YES. I AGREE. IT NEEDS FIXED. What more do you want from me? Another Shooter-style paragraph about Cadillacs and Chevys or something?

This goes WAY beyond simple pessimism. I’m really beginning to believe you need pills for whatever is wrong (unsure how I missed it before). And if you believe it’s going to be SO terrible, there’s always the sig bet offer I left floating.

Because I never compared anything but their resumes. It’s NOT DIFFERENT FOR ME. I DO believe that Williams is a better, more proven coach than Horton. But you can bet your ass that if this season goes much like last season, I’ll be one of the many voices clamoring for his release.

Let me make myself clear: if this was Game 12 of the regular season, I would find being gashed like that totally, completely unacceptable. In fact, I didn’t like it one bit in a preseason game. It’s something that needs addressed, whether it’s a change of player or an adjustment to fundamentals of the player or players that were beat. Getting gashed is never good, but getting gashed in the preseason is just a tad better than in Game 12…isn’t it? Means you can (hopefully) fix it and not have to worry about the record. This is in no way saying that Williams has earned a damn thing; but neither has he doomed himself to a bad season.

Many individuals sucked under Horton, yes. And he may have gotten a raw deal. But when your defense is in the bottom five in the league in every category…well, you’d think they would have been good at something other than sucking. If an offense is doing whatever they want in every game, that’s a problem. Whoever is injured or not performing, it’s “next man up”. The next man up sucked. And that’s probably not Horton’s fault. And unless he did a stellar job (which he obviously didn’t), he was likely nothing more than a placeholder until someone better came along.

But we’re on two different levels, Soup. At no point last year did this team play with any attitude on defense. Now, at least so far, they do. Sorry if you can’t see that.

Landing a solid nut-shot to a bear determined to do ill will to you takes a Chuck Norris level of cunning, bravado, and skill the likes of which aren’t normally seen in most men. Especially when under the duress of being attacked by an apex predator in its own domain and quickly realizing the repercussions of a panicked miss, or even worse, the doom riddled and powerless thud that results if the bear is female. Your scalp will be removed from you before you even have time to process your mistake and certain mauling will ensue. Not to mention, bears aren’t like sharks where they’ll take a nibble, realize you aren’t food and then just leave you to die with a gaping wound. Bears will absolutely fucking eat you, and will most likely start before you’re even dead. That would suck.

What you want to do is raise your arms high above your head to create the illusion that you are much larger than you actually are. This will stun the bears thought process as it will not have seen that coming, and will immediately give you the upper hand in the conflict. At this point you need to charge the bear in a threatening manner, moving your arms feverishly to and fro but still keeping them high above your shoulders, all while letting out a primal scream. This will trigger the bears natural fight or flight response, and since the bear is actually just as afraid of you as you are of it, these maneuvers will establish dominance in the situation and the bear will retreat back into the woods. Once the bear has begun it’s retreat, DO NOT chase the bear, the goal is to trigger the “flight”, not the “fight”, which will happen if the bear is pursued and made to feel trapped, and as such, your heroics will be for not.

As the encounter draws to an end, you’re gonna want to get into full Jay-Z mode and go ahead n brush ya shoulders off to celebrate your wizardry and conquering of the outdoors. Then drink 3 beers as quickly as possible so that you can produce enough urine to effectively mark your territory in a short amount of time. Bears have an acute sense of smell that can pick up even the lightest scent from miles away, and the rage-induced endorphins released from your bladder will create a nearly impenetrable perimeter that the bear will be able to smell for quite some time and remind it to not re-engage you.

But go ahead and try to kick it if you want to. It’s your call really.
