Kizer play as well as i’d hoped he just needs time and good things will come, the line looked better on pass blocking than run blocking. The defense looked tough and held the Stellers running game in check. Pass rush was not there though perhaps by plan or maybe Garretts not being there was a big difference.
All in all excited for once about where this team could go.

I saw half one. I’ll watch half 2 tomorrow. Looking at final, typical Gregg Williams D. No QB pressure at all. At least they can tackle.

Also typical Browns D. Choke when it matters most.

Our ST coordinator should be fired. To not block a guy 1st punt of the season is unacceptable.

Kizer showed potential. I give him a C for now until I see half 2. Missing both Dayes and Willams o n for deep TDs is why. hit 1 of those and he goes up a full letter.

Overall it’s going to be a very long year again. In light of the rift I’m guessing new coach next year.

    Here’s what I saw:

The youngest team in the NFL overcame early adversity and gave a perennial contender a punch in the mouth, staying in the game until the final drive. We started our season off with a loss at home. We’ll end Pittsburgh’s season with a Browns win on the road.

Did the defense miss Haden? Absolutely not. Did it miss Myles Garrett? Absolutely. The scheme for the personnel was brilliant. No, we didn’t get a lot of pressure. Not having the #1 pick in the draft does that to your defense. This could have easily been a 45-18 drubbing. Instead, the defense got gassed from having been on the field too long.

Not all losses are the same. Sure, too much can be made of “moral victories”, but the Browns were the better Offensive and Defensive team today (Sorry Special Teams, you screwed the pooch). We belonged on the field with the Steelers. They were not night and day better than us. Hell, if not for a pair of fluke deflections, Antonio Brown would have been a non-factor.

People like to stir the pot. Is there a rift? Maybe, maybe not. Who gives a f*ck? We’ve not seen anything like the team that was fielded today in the modern era. And it’s young. Very young. And it’s going to get MUCH, MUCH better. Williams is one hell of a coordinator. He knew if we tried to Blitz Roethlisberger with our front 7 (minus Garrett) we’d get burned all game long. He knew that Roethlisberger is dangerous outside of the pocket. He made him stay home and dropped the safeties back deep to keep everything in front of the defense. It was brilliant, and our young defense held what was being hailed as one of the most potent offenses in the game (Roethlisberger, Bell, Brown, Bryant) to a mere 14 points.

Boohoo, you’ve been burnt before and it’s more of the same. It’s not the same. If you thought it was, you clearly weren’t watching the game. These guys didn’t know that the Steelers always win. They didn’t know they were supposed to lay down and die. They kept fighting and they hung around, even when the ball didn’t bounce their way (literally, did you see that wild ass spinning bounce that kept that blocked punt in the endzone!?).

Sure, being cynical is fun. It’s what we’re used too. But for the first time in a long time, I don’t feel like we’re a “this kind of player” away from being competitive. We’re competitive, and I’m going to go hoarse yelling and screaming for this team to bring home the wins. They EARNED that through their play today. If they shit the bed there will be plenty of time to mope around later.

Can’t believe you’re so negative soup. I’m pretty ok with the game today. Kizer had some rookie mistakes and held the ball WAY too long, but I can live with that based on some of the good things he did.

The defense did well, but they needed to do SOMETHING to slow down Brown. The PI on Jamar Taylor, what a ridiculous play to give up 60 yards on. The kept Bell in check until the last play, and we haven’t kept ANY RB in check in recent years, let alone levels Bell, so that was good to see.

Britt…you gotta make that catch. That was inexcusable. You gotta make that catch.

    Overall, I was expecting worse.

If you want a silver lining it’s that Kizer showed potential.

But overall? Same year after year.

    Defense choked.

We ran too many stupid shotgun handoffs.

We got zero pressure on the QB. And as for the Garrett portion of that, Williams had 3 1st round guys on the DL in Rams and couldn’t pressure the QB. All we kept doing was rushing 4. Same story each year.

I don’t believe in moral victories. I believe in wins and losses. We lost yet again on opening day and yet again and n the division. If we lose next week the season is over.

Can’t believe you’re so negative soup.

Lmao, you’ve read Soups posts before right? Do you see his signature lol?

I expected nothing less from him. To be honest I stopped reading halfway through his first post. I’ll sum up everything he’s going to say for the entire year: “Everything sucks, the defense sucks, the run game sucks, the coaching sucks, all of the players suck, all the coaches should be fired, there is no future, Goodell is moving the team to England”. Just read that at the end of every game and you’ll know how Soup feels about the Browns.

As for me, wow! What a pleasant surprise. I have legitimate, genuine excitement over Kizer. I can’t believe I just said that considering how anti-drafting him and anti-starting him I was, but I am. Yes, very very rookie-ish out there but really, what else could be expected? He held the ball for an eternity and as a result took 400 sacks, and his INT was unacceptable, but that’s what rookies do. Outside of that, man did I love what I saw from him. He showed so much ooey gooey goodness out there. The offense moved. They sustained drives. He was making some good decisions, he was making progressions. His arm talent is indisputable. He has fantastic mobility and the ability to extend plays. The future looks bright at the spot of most our bemoaning.

Corey Coleman, welcome back. 5 catches for 53 yards and a TD on 6 targets. Him and Kizer are developing a rapport and I think it’s going to be fun to watch this year.

Our defense shut down the (arguably) best back in the league in Leveon Bell. Just stifled. The pass rush needs to get way better but let’s keep in mind the All-World player we drafted #1 overall for that very purpose wasn’t playing, and that has a lot to do with it. Nassib got in there once though. They didn’t play great, but considering that Pittsburgh is picked to be a Superbowl contender with an elite offense, you have to tip your hat to what they accomplished out there. They held that offense to 14 points and gave us a chance to win and no one would have predicted that. They were aggressive and I liked the energy they brought. How many 3-and-outs did Pitt have? When was the last time a Browns D did that? Against Pitt?

The special teams snafu was the difference in the game. We spotted them 7 to start the game then hung in there and played toe to toe with them and gave ourselves a chance at the end but just came up short.

Overall I was encouraged all the way around in this game. They didn’t get “outplayed” or get pushed around. They didn’t get manhandled and embarrassed. They played hard, smart football, and the Steelers have Antonio Brown. A few plays here and there and the Browns could have snatched a win in this game, and it’s been quite some time since the Browns played at that level. They looked like a football team, and I’m excited about that.

I still only see about 6 wins this year, but it’s going to be fun watching a young, competitive team grow and mature as the season goes on.

You can either go THAT route, or the Soup “everything is fucked, 0-16, football in Cleveland is dead forever” route. I’m going with the former. I’ll let Soup brood over whatever his highly untrained, myopic, agenda-ridden eyes let him see what he thinks they saw.

Britt…you gotta make that catch. That was inexcusable. You gotta make that catch.

Really the only time in this game that I got pissed off. Come on bro, that is a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE play. Britt, you CANNOT do that.

The defense did well, but they needed to do SOMETHING to slow down Brown.

Every defensive coordinator in the NFL would like to know how to do that lol. I mean, he’s the best of the best. It’s like that old Michael Jordan saying “you can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him”. Brown is going to get his and there’s just nothing you can really do about it, especially against such a young, inexperienced and frankly, talent lacking secondary.

We belonged on the field with the Steelers.

Man that feels so good to say doesn’t it?

We’re competitive, and I’m going to go hoarse yelling and screaming for this team to bring home the wins. They EARNED that through their play today.

    I’m right there with you.

The 0 pressure thing, go rewatch that game. Yes, we did not get enough pressure on Roethlisburger, that is true. But, we only rushed 4 and many times 3 for most of the day. I credit Gregg for that one. I’ve been hard on the Browns for switching DCs yet again, but his gameplay was spot on yesterday.

Roethlisberger is notoriously good against the blitz. If Williams would’ve been his usually blitz happy self, the steelers would’ve eaten us up. But instead, Jen dropped 8 into coverage pretty often, and it gave Ben fits.

The D only gave up 14 points yesterday. 14! And 7 of those were due to a 60 yard PI penalty the Antonio Brown should get an oscar for (yes Taylor grabbed him, but Brown wasn’t getting to that ball. He knew he was t getting there, so once he felt Taylor’s hand, he didn’t even try to pull his arm free in order to draw the flag). Ben had several tipped passes as well that they were somehow able to complete.

If you saw he “same ol Browns” yesterday, you were watching a game you wanted to see, and not the one that was being played.

People say I’m too negative. People are saying Browns hung in there with a “Super Bowl contender.”

We lost the game. The rest is irrelevant. How’d we lose? The same way we do every year.

    1. Terrible play resulting in a TD (i.e. special teams blocked punt)

    2. The ball hates us so it always goes the wrong way. Spin on the blocked punt, tipped pass hitting Brown square in the hands to set up the first TD drive.

    3. 2nd and 19 no one in the area – dropped pass.

    4. Defense chokes when it actually matters.

    5. While I praised Kizer due to age and circumstance, we missed 3 wide open throws that would’ve resulted in TDs. He does that next week and he gets no game ball. He gets a goat.

All my friends are telling me I should be excited. I’m not. I know the story. We lost this game by not making the plays with ample opportunity to do so.

Next week – if we lose – season is over. Next week will be a huge test for Kizer. Baltimore destroyed Dalton. That dude never turns it over and threw 4 picks. Next Sunday I turn 42. I want a Browns win. Anything less and it’s the same old song and dance.

We lost the game. The rest is irrelevant.

Then why even discuss it? Why discuss anything past the record? If this statement is true, you’re saying the rest of your post is irrelevant. Do you see how ridiculous that sounds?

    2. The ball hates us so it always goes the wrong way. Spin on the blocked punt, tipped pass hitting Brown square in the hands to set up the first TD drive.

What kind of spin on that blocked punt doesn’t end up in a TD? Best case scenario, it’s a safety and the steelers get the ball back. That’s not bad luck, that’s football.

    3. 2nd and 19 no one in the area – dropped pass.

Which everybody has ragged on Britt about. But, dropped passes happen to every team. Browns receivers are not the only receivers that ever drop passes.

    4. Defense chokes when it actually matters.

They gave up 14 points and 0, NONE, NADA, ZIP, ZILCH, LESS THAN 1, NOT A SINGLE POINT in the 4th quarter. One of the best receivers in the game went up got a 50/50 ball on one play. That’s hardly choking.

    5. While I praised Kizer due to age and circumstance, we missed 3 wide open throws that would’ve resulted in TDs. He does that next week and he gets no game ball. He gets a goat.

Nobody is saying he played flawlessly. He took way too many hits. Way too many sacks. Almost every sack was exclusively his fault. But he showed promise. and BTW, no QB hits every open receiver. It’s not humanly possible.

I want a Browns win. Anything less and it’s the same old song and dance.

    Please see your sig.

Correct, not everyone hits every open reciever. He went 0-3. He hits just 1 of those and it’s a completely different game. Read game balls and goats thread. I gave him a game ball. I see the hope and potential with him.

As for the “50/50” ball, that’s a choke by the defense. But since you love Gregg Williams you refuse to say it. Ben took 6 seconds to throw it. 3 guys didn’t touch it. CHOKE.

Correct, they gave up only 14 points. Their RB also held out and didn’t join the team until Sept 1. Why do you think he and Ben were so out of sync?

Bottom line. 336 left. Their job is a 3 and out and give the offense one last chance. They blew it.

I gotta say I was more impressed than I have ever been on game 1. First series was tough, but after that they didn’t look terrible.

Gregg Williams defense was more impressive than what I thought . The break downs were clearly on the player not making contact or keeping up with the player they should have been. Some bad breaks of tipped balls and we win that game.

    Hue Jackson is a loser.

Dude, I’m literally the only other person on this site that ragged on the front office relentlessly when the fired Horton and signed Williams. I don’t hate him, but I hated the change. But, like I said, I gave him credit because he didn’t do his typical hyper aggressive defense that Roethlisberger would’ve eaten up.

Idont love Williams and I’m not refusing to admit anything. I’m refusing to call one of the best receivers in the league coming down with basically a jump ball a choke. Because it’s not.

Let’s talk about that defense. The commentators were onto it very early; we saw a new adaption to defense that hasn’t hit the NFL yet. On 1st and 2nd downs we played with 9 or 10 guys in the box and a single high safety 25 yards deep. That single safety is the most important part of the defense because they have to be really fast, but also a really good tackler. Jabril Peppers is the only reason we were able to run that D and he did a great job. Never once did anyone on offense get behind him. Putting 10 in the box meant that the Steelers run game never even got started. They rushed 14 times for 43 yards. Also Ben was under pressure a LOT. The stats only show 1 sack but for the first time in years he was forced to adjust and move on almost every play. And that was without blitzing most of the time. We don’t have an answer to Antonio Brown on our roster, and I don’t think any NFL teams do. We kept him out of the endzone and the rest of the Steelers offense was completely neutered.

Honestly we should have won that game. That’s how I feel.
