Browns are 0-2 with the easiest part of the schedule coming up. Does a loss to the winless and Luck-less Colts spell doom?
September 22, 2017 at 9:05 am #9529Dawg E. DawgParticipantI’ve been meaning to post about this. It absolutely is. Not for the season, because I don’t think anybody really has high expectations. But, it’s a must win for the team to keep effort high and keep moving forward.
The Browns lose on Sunday, and the losing is gonna start affecting players and kind of avalanche and before you know it we have a new HC and a new front office. I actually think it’s one of the most important games of the past 3-4 seasons at least. And that’s not hyperbole.
I’m not trying to say a win a Sunday fixes everything because it’s still the Luckless Colts. But a loss on Sunday and it’s pretty much the beginning of the end for the current regime.
September 22, 2017 at 9:54 am #9530soupParticipantYes it’s must win. If we lose it’s 2-14 at best and tear down trade everyone rebuild next year.

September 22, 2017 at 9:55 am #9531soupParticipantOh, and we will lose. Hue is clueless as OC. We will throw 40 times and run 15 at most. Kizer will take 3-5 sacks and turn it over 3 times.

You realize if we go 2-14 that is 100% improvement from last year. If we make that improvement 4 years in a row that’s an undefeated season!
If I’m writing up a gameplan against the Colts, it’s going to include throwing the ball a LOT. They’ve held opponents to 2.5 ypa rushing, but are allowing almost 10 ypa passing. Jared Goff and 50 year old Carson Palmer were both able to hang over 300 yards on them. With Vontae Davis likely out it’s almost like the football gods are BEGGING us to pass on them. This could be Kiser’s first monster game, if we could just get some WR’s to catch the damn ball. Looking at you Kenny Britt. So far you’re making about $1mil per catch.

Everything that breathes air in Cincinnati disagrees with you.

Agreed. Normally I’m for running the hell out of the ball, but against what these guys are doing, let it rip. I’d also line Duke Johnson up in the slot, and often.
Also, to answer the thread question, yes this is a must-win game. Can’t go 0-3.

@ice they talked about it on Mike and Mike and you could see it last night. With the change in coaching Goff is a completely different QB. They dumbed things down for his youth. He out up 292 with 3 TD and 0 int yesterday. 22-28. He also had a few drops too.
Repeatedly throwing the ball is moronic. If we keep not running we will continue to lose and back to rebuilding with more idiots.
I need to reach out to Haslam for a coaching position. I stand next to Hue. Every pass play called he gets a punch in the nuts. Every run play gets a hug.

Oh, that’s right…gray areas are not your forte.
My take is yes, we pass the ball on a defense that can’t seem to stop it, but we certainly don’t get away from the run. If Crow wants that big payday he’s been crying for, he needs to go earn it. And there’s nothing like telling an offensive lineman “we’re gonna run it down their throats”. At some point Hue needs to place some faith in those guys and let them do just that.
September 22, 2017 at 3:38 pm #9537soupParticipantRight I’m clueless. When we throw 40 times a game we win a lot. In fact, in the history of the NFL when you throw all over the field and ignore the run game with a rookie QB that QB plays amazing and wins tons of game. Nothing is smarter than out the game in the hands of a rookie QB without attempting to run.

We know Soup, we know. Spare us.
This just in, Vontae Davis will probably play Sunday. 🙁
September 22, 2017 at 4:37 pm #9539soupParticipantForget hearing it. You’ve SEEN IT every Sunday during the season. Yet you refuse to learn from it and said you’d call a lot of passes this Sunday. Use your head.

September 24, 2017 at 1:31 am #9540ShooterModeratorHere’s the problem though.
The defense is getting paid too, and when the defense is doing it’s job and stopping the run, you have to try to do other things. Considering that i football there are only two ways to move the ball, running and throwing, the “other things” would fall in the passing game. See the Pitt game. We stifled Bell, so Pitt had no choice but to pass. We MADE them do that.
Sometimes, the defense does that to us. In those situations, you don’t really have options.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m in your corner on this. I really am. I want to see 35+ run plays and 20 pass pass plays a game. I really, really really do. But, if you run for 2,1, and 3 and then punt, then 3, 1, 2 and punt, 4,0,4 punt, 4,5,1 punt That’s 4 possessions that netted you less than 40 yards, 4 three and outs taxed your defense and probably has you down by 2+ scores.
At some point you have to admit that the run game just isn’t working and take a different approach.
Sure if the defense is yielding 5.1 yards per carry to you dude, fuck yeah run it down their throats, run it all day. Pound, pound and then pound some more.
Crowell averaged 1.9 yards per carry against Pitt. 3.7 against the Rats. (I’m not even going to talk about Duke Johnson because his value as a runner is nearly nothing).
That’s 2.8 yards per carry Soup. 3 plays, 8 yards. I don’t know if you know this or not, but a first down is 10 yards. 8 is less than 10. That means punt. Which means no points. Which also means we play defense the entire game.
I’m not saying I like it at all. I’m not saying it’s a good idea. I’m not even saying that I agree with the approach because I think you have to keep plugging away, but at the same time, again, when you’re halfway through the 2nd quarter and you’re averaging 3 yards a carry……..you HAVE to do something else to move the ball. You may not WANT to, but you HAVE to.
This isn’t Big Ben handing off to Bettis for his entire rookie year, or Kurt Warner handing it to Marshall Faulk, or Drew Brees tucking the rock into LT’s hands. It isn’t even Andy Dalton relying on Hill and Bernard. We have Isiah fucking Crowell and a gigantic cliff behind him. You have to put it into perspective.
Do I like it? Fuck no. Do I wish it were being done differently? Of course. Do I think it’s potentially damaging to a a young QB? Very. But do I think we have much of a choice right now? Not really dude. Crow has gained 70 yards on 27 carries for 2.6 a rip. That sucks, and we need to move the fucking ball. End of story.
September 24, 2017 at 6:50 am #9541soupParticipant2002 playoff game. William Green 25 carries for 30 yards. You have to keep the defense honest. Once you go all pass it’s game over.
Last week 1st and goal from the 5. We didn’t even attempt a handoff. That’s unacceptable. 3 runs for 8 yards puts us 3 yards in the end zone and a 24-17 game.
We refuse to even try and run. It’s killed us for what, 16 of 18 seasons? Last year we never ran the ball yet our backs both averaged over 4.5 YPC.
It’s a Hue Jackson problem.
