All the quotes being tossed around, all the actions being performed point to that conclusion. You’ll notice that whenever anyone asks about Manziel in a football sense, the team does not even talk about him being on the field, they just discuss trying to help him as a person. All throughout the offseason not one single team official has given Manziel a vote of confidence or mentioned him as a starter. In fact they have come out and blatantly said they are looking for a starting QB. It seems a trade might be the best scenario for the team.
Where would I peg his value? Extremely low. Maybe a 5th. Maybe less. Surely we can get a 5th from Jerry Jones, right? If we get anything better then I consider it a gift.
March 2, 2015 at 11:46 am #817the dudeParticipantThe thing is, I am not sure any one would want him. The dude is currently in rehab. With stories breaking of another Josh Hamilton incident or what we have seen with Gordon, why would anyone want to take a risk?
So far he has shown terrible work ethic. He has been out of control. He has shown no signs he is ready to be in the NFL.
Normally, a player in this situation would be worth a 2nd to early 3rd round pick. But the reality of the situation is that the Browns just signed a career loser as their starting QB just to trade away there previous year first round pick. If I am a GM of any team, I wouldn’t even be willing to sign him if he is outright released.
Hue Jackson is a loser.

In other words, much like there isn’t a pressing need to move on Gordon, I’d do the same with Manziel.
March 6, 2015 at 8:46 am #842IceKeymasterI think Dallas is actually a perfect spot for Manziel. They have an entrenched starter for the next couple years so Manziel can actually learn how to be a pro, and Dallas is famous for having a support network for players with substance abuse issues. If I were Manziel, that’s where I’d want to be.
From the viewpoint of the Browns, we can’t look at what we gave up to get him. We have to focus on what’s best for the team going forward. At this point would you rather have Manziel on the roster or another mid-late round pick? For me it’s a tossup.
March 6, 2015 at 3:30 pm #843MDP Sack AttackParticipantI hate to say it, because I’ve disliked Manziel as much as anyone since before the draft…but all signs point to you trying to get your hopes up.
As much as Manziel could not have possibly looked worse on or off the field, you’re getting a late round pick at best for him. I’d think even a 5th rounder is possibly unrealistic. At that point, the slim chance of Manziel being the quarterback who Farmer thought he was drafting is more valuable.
Also, he did coluntarily admit he has problems and enter a rehab program. From a league/players standpoint, the Browns have a lot to gain in perception of their toxic franchise by at least appearing to be there for the guy they drafted, as opposed to cutting ties.
March 6, 2015 at 6:19 pm #844IceKeymasterWell said. If we reversed our point of view it could make sense. Would you give up a 5th round pick for a QB who was drafted in the 1st round last year, fought substance abuse and was completely unprepared in his 2 starts? When you ask it that way, it sounds like it might be worth a shot. You think maybe you can ‘fix’ the football issues since he’s taken the steps of ‘fixing’ his addiction issues.

I really don’t think he is going anywhere unless we make a move to get Mariotta or Winston.

That’s my point. However, I do see us making a move for a QB. Mariotta is the same as Manziel as a prospect in that they both ran kindergarten offenses and succeeded in them. Except that Mariotta is bigger, stronger, faster, and has a much better head on his shoulders. There’s no way to know what his ceiling is as a pro so it’s a huge risk, but as of this moment that’s what I see in my crystal ball. Even though Mariotta is a rookie and Manziel has been in a similar offense for a year, I’m guessing it’ll only take a month before Mariotta knows the offense better than Manziel.
If Mariotta isn’t the move, I still don’t think we’re done looking for a starting QB. This coach is not stupid enough to tie his wagon to Manziel/McCown.
