Apparently all is not quite well in Berea. While it’s true that Browns GM Ray Farmer and Head Coach Mike Pettine will be retained after a 7-9 record in 2014, there’s talk that offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is a candidate for the currently vacant head coaching position at Buffalo – or possibly off to re-unite with his father, Mike Shanahan. There have been rumors from multiple sources that there’s friction between front office people and the coaching staff concerning (drum roll please) Johnny Manziel and his readiness to take over as the team’s starting quarterback – or the lack thereof.
Suppose (hypothetically) that Kyle does not return. Who would replace him? What recognizable name would bring a sense of familiarity to Browns fans? Here’s one for you . . . how about Marc Trestman, most recently let go as Chicago Bears head coach? Trestman has already interviewed in Tampa is rumored to be up for the O-C position in Jacksonville; so he might not be on the open market for long. If a move is inevitable, then let’s move quickly and decisively to get this done. And while we’re at it, why don’t Ray Farmer and Jimmy Haslam extend a much overdue olive branch and bring on Bernie Kosar to help with the scouting – particularly to bring in a franchise quarterback to Cleveland?
These two moves have been long overdue in my humble opinion. Let’s get Marc Trestman to lead the Browns offensive attack and bring Bernie back to the Browns full time where he belongs.

January 7, 2015 at 1:27 pm #430IceKeymasterBased on all the talk, I’d say the chances that Shanny returns are about 1%, so we certainly are in the market for an OC.
I’m not a big follower of Ohio State and I didn’t catch many Bears games, so what kind of offense would Trestman bring? Assume for the second that we retain Hoyer or sign Orton or Cousins, and that we also have Johnny Playtime on the roster… what could Trestman do with that?
January 7, 2015 at 1:46 pm #432BillWunkleParticipantTrestman has been with the 49ers and Raiders as OC and coached the Montreal Alouettes to multiple Grey Cup Championships. Then he returned to the NFL with the Chicago Bears before being given his walking papers there. In Cleveland, Trestman was Bernie’s QB coach under OC Lindy Infante. Trestman’s offense would be catered to the talent on the offensive side of the football, with lots of multiple sets and option pass route running. Considering the climate, he may also want to include some ground and pound type of plays. All of this is speculation on my part, of course.

January 7, 2015 at 2:06 pm #435IceKeymasterMy problem with most OC’s, certainly all the ones we’ve had until Shanny, is that they want to show just how smart they are. They want to trick defenses and out-think them. That just doesn’t work with our team in our division. We need an OC who has enough cajones that they can just let the ground game work. No tricks, no gimmicks, just tell our guys that they need to outplay the other guys. When OC’s get cute, things get ugly.
Can Trestman be that guy? Or was his pride sufficiently hurt by his recent firing that he needs to show the NFL just how smart he is?
January 7, 2015 at 3:08 pm #436the dudeParticipant@ Ice Man – This is the second time I have seen you mention Orton’s name. Not sure if you caught this, but Orton is retired. Like I don’t think he wants to play anymore. He is like a 10 year veteran so I don’t think money will convince him and for him to announce it almost directly after the final game and not even to wait to free agency, I think he is done.
@ Uncle Bill – This team is too close to actually being good – QB needs addressed and Kyle Shannahan didn’t grow as the season went on…the offense proceeded to get worse. So I guess it will be no lost and once again we will have to start fresh.
Hue Jackson is a loser.
January 7, 2015 at 5:33 pm #439BillWunkleParticipant@ Dude – The Browns are going to re-address the QB position – whether via the draft, trade or free agency. Johnny is nowhere near ready for prime time, Hoyer is likely going to sign elsewhere as a backup and Connor Shaw needs to improve his arm strength and get more acclimated to the speed of the NFL game as well. If Shanahan were to stay on board, how long before he tries to get his boss to trade for Kirk Cousins? I’m not so sure that’s a direction I want to see.
The Browns also need to address the WR position early this offseason – and hopefully with a replacement for Josh Gordon. As much as I love Flash’s talent, I’ve just about had it with his act. Shape up or ship out is all I can say to Josh.
Let’s not forget about the lack of quality depth along the O-line. We need to have eight O-linemen on this roster that are good enough to start on ANY NFL team. The injury to Alex Mack was ginormous.

January 8, 2015 at 9:14 am #446IceKeymaster@billwunkle your silence on my post about Trestman swallowing his pride is speaking volumes. 🙂
@dude I don’t know why I keep saying Orton when I mean Brett Favre. My mistake.
January 8, 2015 at 12:26 pm #463BillWunkleParticipant@ Ice – I’m more concerned about his desire to remain in the NFL than his pride being injured. I’m confident that the severance pay Trestman got from Chicago will more than compensate him for his wounded pride.

January 8, 2015 at 12:40 pm #465soupParticipantI agree with @Ice. We need to find an OC willing to run under any and all conditions and never set the game aside. I also loathe when OC’s get cute – which Shannahan did multiple times to the tune of going 1-3 in those times. He refused to run when the situation dictated it.

how many times a game do you think we should run?
Hue Jackson is a loser.
January 13, 2015 at 12:56 pm #474soupParticipant@dude it’s more about the dictation of runs. 1st and goal from the 6. RB getting 7 yards per catty with 2 TDs already. Guys busted 18 and 20 yard runs on the drive. You are up by 2. There’s less than 5 minutes left. Under no circumstance whatsoever do you even entertain the thought of passing the football. What did we call? A pass play. It was intercepted. That call pick is 100% the fault of Shanahan. The situation overwhelmingly dictated run – so he passed. He did that numerous times at the end of games – we went 1-3 in those games.
When the situation dictates run – you run the ball. You think idiots in Cleveland would’ve learned this from Red Right 88. But no, they consistently defend stupid play calling then wonder why we lose so much.
Newsflash – Aaron Rodgers is NOT our QB. We complain about not having QB’s – then pass in situations that dictate we should run – then blame the QB and let the OC off scott free. Think about it – we haven’t had a QB in 15 years and continue to pass when the situation dictates to run.

when is the last time we had a running back with 7 yards per catty?
when is the last time we have had a good running back? come on brah!! how many catties!?

January 19, 2015 at 1:00 pm #480BillWunkleParticipantReports are that “the interview went well”. We’ll eventually find out just how well. The BIG determining factor with whoever they bring in will depend on whether Ray Farmer is fixed on making the Johnny the starting QB come hell or high water. If he is, his tenure in Cleveland could be shorter than any of us could possibly imagine.

January 20, 2015 at 4:28 pm #487IceKeymasterConfirmed: Trestman IS moving!!! To Baltimore where he’ll be the Raven’s OC.

when is the last time we have had a good running back? come on brah!! how many catties!?@dude You had one responsibility. Don’t ask a loaded question. The last time we had a RB get 7YPC was Crowell vs Atlanta. 12 carries for 88 yards with 2 TDs. 1st and goal on the 6 and the dense one called a pass play.
FYI – he had 11 carries for 80 yards going into that play. He got one more carry after that. It went for 8 yards.
We were up 23-21 and on that drive he called 1 run play AFTER the stupidity of throwing on 1st and goal from the 6.
The guy they just hired best be running the ball like crazy. In similar situations with a lead – he better not even THINK of throwing a pass. 1-3 in these situations due to that type of ignorance from our former OC.
