BILL WUNKLE’S 2019 FINAL NFL MOCK DRAFT

Happy Draft Day everyone! Welcome to the 2019 edition of Bill Wunkle’s NFL Mock Draft brought to you by the great people at brownsfootballtalk.com. As with every mock draft, there are certain rules by which we will abide. Typically, my final mocks will allow for trades; and thus, we are continuing that rule. Length of this mock will be a minimum of two rounds with bonus picks by the Cleveland Browns listed afterwards. That said, let’s get on with the show.

    ROUND ONE

With the first overall pick, the Arizona Cardinals select . . .

Kyler Murray – QB – Oklahoma : At the time of my pre-combine mock draft, I thought that the Cardinals quarterback situation had been solved last season. However, with a new head coach and offensive system, it appears that everything is on the table. With that said, the Cardinals will most likely draft Oklahoma’s one year wonder and then trade Josh Rosen to some team outside the NFC West. Is this risky business? Absolutely. Is this a high risk / high reward move? Absolutely. Could this move possibly set the Cardinals back another five years? Again, absolutely.

With the second overall pick, the San Francisco 49ers select . . .

Josh Allen – OLB – Kentucky: This kid is the closest thing to Khalil Mack in this year’s draft, and the 49ers need a pass rusher. Allen can not only rush the passer, but he can play the run and even cover a RB or TE when called upon. In short, Josh Allen is the most versatile player in this draft and carries the highest overall grade (6.70, tied with Alabama’s Quinnen Williams) in this year’s draft.

With the Third overall pick, the New York Jets select . . .

Quinnen Williams – DT – Alabama: Williams could play anywhere along the defensive line and make an immediate impact. However, I think that he’s best suited as a three technique in new Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams’ scheme.

With the fourth overall pick, the Oakland Raiders select . ..

Nick Bosa – DE – Ohio State: A slight slide from where I originally thought he would land, but Bosa will fill a gaping hole for a pass rusher that opened up with the Khalil Mack trade last year. Bosa’s impact will be immediate and painful to opposing NFL quarterbacks.

After a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with the fifth overall pick, the Cincinnati Bengals select . . .

Dwayne Haskins – QB – Ohio State: Andy Dalton has been Andy Dalton, and that should speak for itself. What I mean by that is he’s just been adequate most of the time, but not a true franchise caliber quarterback. Cincinnati had to move ahead of the Giants in order to secure this pick – which will likely stir up trade talks between the Giants and the Cardinals for quarterback Josh Rosen. The Bengals give up their second round pick (#42) and a second round pick in 2020 to move up from eleventh overall.

With the sixth overall pick, the New York Giants select . . .

Montez Sweat – DE – Mississippi State: Since the Bengals beat the Giants to the punch for a quarterback, they decided to beef up the D-line. Look for the G-men to get their heir apparent to Eli Manning via a trade . . . just saying.

With the seventh overall pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars select . . .

DeKaylin “DK” Metcalf – WR – Mississippi: I wanted to give them an edge rusher, but one here would be a stretch. Metcalf is a physical freak whose college career was a bit underwhelming – partially due to injuries.

With the eighth overall pick, the Detroit Lions select . . .

Andraez “Greedy Williams” – CB – LSU: This is a place where the Lions could trade back a few spots, still fill a need and pick up some extra draft collateral. Should they make a selection here, then Williams would fill a top need with the best corner in this draft.

With the ninth overall pick, the Buffalo Bills select . . .

Jonah Williams – OT – Alabama: After selecting their franchise quarterback last year, the Bills need to protect him better. The addition of Williams will do just that.

With the tenth overall pick, the Denver Broncos select . . .

Ed Oliver – DT – Houston: There’s not a quarterback worthy of the selection at this point, so Oliver is the BPA in a position of need.

After a draft day trade with Cincinnati Bengals, with the eleventh overall pick, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select . . .

Devin White – LB – LSU: White is truly a sideline to sideline 3-down linebacker who plays the game with extreme intensity.

With the twelfth overall pick, the Green Bay Packers select . . .

TJ Hockenson – TE – Iowa: Out of the positions of need, Hockenson is the highest rated player. Enough said.

With the thirteenth overall pick, the Miami Dolphins select . . .

Jawaan Taylor – OT – Florida: Lets face it, The Dolphins signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to be a stop gap quarterback until they could draft his successor. And while they may select a quarterback here, I think it would be a major mistake because there isn’t one left on the board who is worthy of the selection. The addition of Taylor will solidify an offensive line that needs some help.

With the fourteenth overall pick, the Atlanta Falcons select . . .

Rashan Gary – DT – That School Up North: An injury will cause Gary to slide outside the top ten, but some team may be convinced that he can play through the 2019 season with the injury.

With the fifteenth overall pick, the Washington Redskins select . . .

Marquise Brown – WR – Oklahoma: One of their primary needs is at wide receiver, and the Skins get a little lucky by having Brown fall right into their lap.

With the sixteenth overall pick, the Carolina Panthers select . . .

Clelin Ferrell – DE – Clemson: Finally, one of the feared Clemson D-linemen gets taken off the board.

After trading WR Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns, with the seventeenth overall pick, the New York Giants select . . .

DeAndre Baker – CB – Georgia: O-line will be a consideration here, but the talent level will prove that they made the right decision.

With the eighteenth overall pick, the Minnesota Viking select . . .

Christian Wilkins – DT – Clemson: The loss of Sheldon Richardson to Cleveland makes this move almost a no-brainer.

With the nineteenth overall pick, the Tennessee Titans select . . .

AJ Brown – WR – Mississippi: It’s a little early to give them either an edge rusher or an interior O-lineman, so I give them a play maker.

With the twentieth overall pick, the Pittsburgh Steelers select . . .

Julian Love – CB – Notre Dame: I didn’t want to give them another Buckeye receiver, even though Paris Campbell could very well be the pick here.

With the twenty-first overall pick, the Seattle Seahawks select . . .

Jachai Polite – OLB – Florida: The Seahawks needed to replace Frank Clark. I think this kid will do.

With the twenty-second pick, the Baltimore Ravens select . . .

Paris Campbell – WR – Ohio State: What can I say? It’s a need pick.

With the twenty-third pick, the Houston Texans select . . .

Andre Dillard – OT – Washington State: After seeing this play out the way it did, I’m surprised that Dillard was still available.

After trading OLB Khalil Mack to the Chicago Bears, with the twenty-fourth pick, the Oakland Raiders select . . .

Josh Jacobs – RB – Alabama: I’m also surprised that it took so long for a running back to come off the board.

With the twenty-fifth pick, the Philadelphia Eagles select . . .

Dalton Risner – OT – Kansas State: The Iggles need to protect their franchise quarterback so that he can be healthy for an entire season.

With the twenty-sixth pick, the Indianapolis Colts select . . .

Dexter Lawrence – DT – Clemson: The interior of the D-line needs a run stuffer. I think this kid will do the job just fine.

After trading WR Amari Cooper to the Dallas Cowboys, with the twenty-seventh overall pick, the Oakland Raiders select . . .

Devin Bush – LB – That School Up North: What can I say? Chucky Gruden and Mike Mayock upgraded their front seven and gave their franchise quarterback a bell cow running back to start off the first day of the draft.

With the twenty-eighth overall pick, the Los Angeles Chargers select . . .

Cody Ford – OT – Oklahoma: Phillip Rivers isn’t getting any younger, and the Chargers need to do a better job of protecting him.

After trading LB Frank Clark to Kansas City, with the twenty-ninth overall pick, the Seattle Seahawks select . . .

Byron Murphy – CB – Washington: Not only is this kid a hometown favorite, but he’s one heck of a player.

To complete a 2018 Draft Day trade with the New Orleans Saints, with the thirtieth overall pick, the Green Bay Packers select . . .

Greg Little – OT – Mississippi: The Packers need to protect Aaron Rodgers and keep him healthy for the entire season.

With the thirty-first overall pick, the Los Angeles Rams select . . .

Brian Burns – DE – Florida State: You can never have enough good pass rushers.

With the thirty-second overall pick, the New England Patriots select . . .

Irv Smith – TE – Alabama: The retirement of Rob Gronkowski left some big shoes to fill. I think this addition will help soften the blow.

    ROUND TWO

    33) ArizonaCardinals: Jerry Tillery – DT – Notre Dame

    34) Indianapolis Colts: Taylor Rapp – S – Washington

    35) Cleveland Browns (from Oakland): Jonathan Abram – S – Mississippi State . . . As Browns Assistant GM Eliot Wolf says, “John Dorsey doesn’t like to sit still”. He sees a potential run at the safety position and gets proactive in order to land his targeted player. In exchange for moving down to #49, the Raiders receive the Browns 2020 second round pick.

    36) San Francisco 49ers: Chauncey Gardner-Johnson – S – Florida

    63) Kansas City Chiefs (from LA Rams): Rock Ya-Sin – CB – Temple

    64) New England Patriots: Tytus Howard – OT/OG – Alabama State

    ADDITIONAL BROWNS PICKS . . .

    81) Amani Oruwariye – CB – Penn State

    120) projected trade with Buffalo for the Bills’ 2020 third round pick, since John Dorsey has already traded away some draft capital to move up to #35.

    145) Mark Fields – CB – Clemson

    156) Emeke Egbule – LB – Houston

    171) David Edwards – OT – Wisconsin

    191) Jonathan Ledbetter – DT – Georgia

    223) Justin Hollins – DE/OLB – Oregon

    ROOKIE FREE AGENT CANDIDATES . . .

Mike Weber – RB – Ohio State

Easton Stick – QB – North Dakota State

Gary Jennings – WR – West Virginia

    Cole Tracy – K – LSU

Rashad Fenton – CB – South Carolina

Caleb Wilson – TE – UCLA

Jordan Jones – LB – Kentucky

    Darius West – S – Kentucky

Martez Ivey – OG – Florida

Devon Johnson – OT – Ferris State

So in this mock; I have the Browns addressing the defensive secondary, offensive line and the defensive front seven. Surprisingly, there were some players that could possibly contribute – at least on special teams – as undrafted rookie free agents. And with that, we wrap up yet another mock draft. This is Bill Wunkle reporting from The Padded Cell. Have a good night everybody!

Wunkle, if you needed a QB in this draft and had the 1st overall pick in this draft would you take Murray?

    Because I wouldn’t.

Quite frankly, Ice, Kyler Murray scares the living $h!# out of me. Not just because of his lack of physical size, but also the fact that he’s only a one year starter. He may prove me wrong with Cliff Kingsbury’s offense, but I’m still not totally convinced that he’s got the frame to take the pounding of NFL size linemen and linebackers. He’s going to have to prove that he can beat NFL defenses with his arm and not with just his legs. That was a “who I think they’ll take” pick, not a “who they should take” pick. There can be a huge difference between the two.

Bill, does Haskins concern you at all regarding the fact that he’s also a one-year starter? I’d take him over Kyler, though for sure.

I think NFL teams should wake up and realize that the more seasons someone starts in college the better QB they’ll be. At the very least, you’ll have a much better idea whether or not they’ll be a good QB.

It concerns me to a point, but I’ve seen more live game action of Haskins than any other QB in this draft. He’s got all the traits you want in a QB, except for escapability from a pass rush.

And when it’s all said and done, it could be that either Daniel Jones or Will Grier could end up having better NFL careers because they’ll be given an opportunity to develop before being thrown to the wolves.

Key words “in this draft”. I’m so glad we aren’t looking for a QB in this draft because pickings are slim.
