BEREA, Ohio — The Browns have signed third-string quarterback Austin Davis to a two-year contract extension through 2017.
It’s a puzzling move for the team as the debate intensifies around Cleveland over whether Josh McCown or Johnny Manziel should start.
The Browns signed Davis, who went 3-5 as a starter last season with St. Louis, to a one-year deal on Sept. 7, two days after he was waived by the Rams. He hasn’t played with Cleveland and is currently behind both McCown and Manziel on the depth chart, but the Browns apparently view him as someone worth locking up.
Davis’ new deal is worth $4.2 million and includes $500,000 guaranteed.
Davis came off the bench in St. Louis after injuries sidelined Sam Bradford and Shaun Hill. Davis passed for 2,001 yards and 12 touchdowns

Manziel’s career is pretty much over. he still doesn’t understand the schemes/routes. He doesn’t have a quality arm (for people who are going to talk about 50 yard throws – it’s not how far it can be thrown – it’s how much zip is on the ball for things like out patterns). This is very intriguing because that’s hefty dough for a 3rd string QB.

Hue Jackson is a loser.

October 4, 2015 at 2:31 pm #2284BrownsFan4LifeParticipantHe received a $500k signing bonus. His salary is $800k this year ($1.3 total). Next year is $1.35m and then $1.7m in 2017. Not a bad investment.
