January 6, 2020 at 12:05 pm #17807IceKeymasterThey also want previous head coaching experience.
Haslam mentioned NFL coaching experience, did not mention HEAD coaching experience.
January 6, 2020 at 12:15 pm #17808IceKeymasterSo I sourced that to Pro Football Network, and it came from this one line:
“Allbright is hearing that the disagreement between management and ownership continues when it comes to the status of Kitchens. Rumor has it that Dee Haslam wants Josh McDaniels while GM John Dorsey would like to retain Kitchens.”
So that comes from a non-sourced ‘rumor’ that came out while Kitchens was still our HC, and before any HC search had begun.I’ll let everyone make their own mind up on how valid that is.

January 6, 2020 at 12:56 pm #17810IceKeymasterQuick survey…. does anyone else hate McDaniels? How do you all feel about him?
January 6, 2020 at 1:52 pm #17813soupParticipantIt’s going to be a complete disaster if he’s hired. All you have to do is look at their offense this year.
You nailed it with me. I want a defensive coach who understands the value of ball control and play action. I’m so tired of people throwing the ball 40 times a game. Running is the future of the game.

January 6, 2020 at 2:29 pm #17816IceKeymasterYou nailed it with me.
To be honest, you don’t make it that hard to guess your thoughts.
I want a head coach who works strategically, and delegates tactics to his coordinators. I don’t care if he comes from playing offense or defense.
January 6, 2020 at 10:07 pm #17823Dawg E. DawgParticipantI hate McDaniels. I hate that he turned his back on the Colts, and the coaches he was lining up, when he decided to stay in New England. I hate that he thought Tim Tebow was a first round talent. And I hate that he wants roster control, or his guy in control, which is really roster control by proxy. Belichick is disciples don’t have success duplicating his system, and I don’t see McDaniels as being any different.
The guy I want is Stefanksi, simply because he runs Shanahans system, which is the best system in the NFL right now.
Joe Thomas and Hawkins talk about it on their podcast, but basically, in a typical offense, the passing game gets a lot of attention, and then a run game coordinator takes care of the run game. The two are basically separate responsibilities, and there’s not much overlap, and you end up with one side getting the run plays ready, and the other side getting the pass plays ready.
In Shanahans offense (that Stefanski runs) there’s a huge focus on making run plays and pass plays have the same movements and motions post snap, so it looks the same to the defense right up until the ball is handed off or passed. This is the main reason the play action works so well in that offense, because the players are moving in a lot of the same ways they would on a regular run play.
I’m oversimplifying it, but that’s the gist of their breakdown, which is good enough for me.
Also, I googled Kevin Stefanksi, and he’s my wife’s pick for head coach too. So, happy wife, happy life.

🏈Thursday: Vikings OC Kevin Stefanski.
🏈Friday: Patriots OC Josh McDaniels.
Already interviewed: Eric Bieniemy, Greg Roman, Robert Saleh.Browns want to have a deal in By Saturday:
🤣 if Schefter source is right it’s Mcdaniels. Definitely not anyone still in the playoffs

January 7, 2020 at 1:53 pm #17841MDP Sack AttackParticipantI liked McDaniels getting a second go-around with Dorsey as GM and an established front office and power structure. He has a good and innovative mind for offense and gameplanning, and keeps NE fresh and reinvented year after year.
I don’t like McDaniels coming in, picking his own GM and being the defacto head of the organization. He doesn’t have the experience to handle that much responsibility, nor the track record to deserve it. McCarthy was the only one I was comfortable with in that situation.
January 7, 2020 at 3:07 pm #17842IceKeymasterI would like to go back in time and name Kyle Shanahan our HC. We knew that guy was amazing when he was here and we let him leave for no reason.

No reason? He didn’t want Johnny Football as his QB. Clearly a failure of a coach
January 7, 2020 at 5:35 pm #17844ShooterModeratorWe knew that guy was amazing when he was here and we let him leave for no reason.
The reason was a 38-point Powerpoint presentation on why he wanted to get the fuck out of Cleveland lol.
January 7, 2020 at 6:11 pm #17845Dawg E. DawgParticipantIn retrospect, that was probably the abridged version
January 8, 2020 at 3:51 am #17852soupParticipantBTW if we hire Stefanski it’ll be Freddie part 2. Much like Zampese was the architect of Baker, Gary Kubiak is the offensive adviser and assistant head coach of the Vikings. Stefanski isn’t someone anyone should be talking to.
3 games as interim OC
16 games as OC with Kubiak advising him. There’s zero reason for him to be talked to and think it’ll work out.
Zulgad: Job saver: Gary Kubiak quietly has been a key to the Vikings’ success

January 8, 2020 at 10:10 am #17858Dawg E. DawgParticipantI’ve definitely cooled on Stefanski. Not because of his lack of OC experience, but because of his lack of experience outside of Minnesota.
I don’t like guys that have been in one place their entire career, as generally, they’ll just try to implement that organization in a different place. Stefanski only knows Minnesota, and I don’t want him trying to turn Cleveland into Minnesota.
I prefer a candidate with more variety in their background. It gives them more experience to pull from and allows them to better fit scheme to their players instead of trying to force it the other way around, which never works.
January 8, 2020 at 1:12 pm #17859IceKeymasterGood points Dawg.
January 10, 2020 at 12:51 am #17862BrownsFan4LifeParticipantThe longer it goes the more I think it is McDaniels. I don’t mind it. Putting together a coaching staff will be interesting no matter who they hire. If it is McDaniels, I would expect a few NE coaches to come here. The one plus on McDaniels is that he has previous HC experience and hopefully learned from his mistakes.
He is also one of 3 people, aside from the owner, who have been with NE for all of their SB victories. The others are Belichick and Brady.January 10, 2020 at 9:47 am #17864Dawg E. DawgParticipantI think 100% it’s McDaniels. Haslam said they plan to have a coach by Saturday.
Assuming they wouldn’t name a coach currently in the playoffs, on the day of or the day before he coaches in a playoff game, to be their new Head Coach, that rules out Stefanski and whoever they all interviewed from San Fran. Also takes out Greg Roman and Eric Bienemy.
In fact, I think the only ones left are Brian Daboll and McDaniels. And there’s been a hell of a lot more smoke around McDaniels.
January 11, 2020 at 12:40 pm #17865soupParticipantVery surprised Mcdaniels hasn’t been announced yet. If it’s Stefanski I’m going to throw up in my mouth

January 11, 2020 at 10:33 pm #17874Dawg E. DawgParticipantWell, it’s looking like Stefanski and Roman will be out of the playoffs tomorrow. If it’s one of them, I’d expect an announcement Monday at the latest.
If we wake up Tuesday and there hasn’t been an announcement, I’m going to assume it s Bienemy or Saleh. Right now I’m getting the feeling it’s Saleh.

Done. And when we are looking for a coach in 1 to 2 years Saleh will be gone and it’ll be same old coordinator with 1 year of experience and no resume.
The guys Saleh supposedly wants to bring along are the types of guys everyone clamors for.
Dan Fouts said it best during the ass kicking of Baltimore is that a team takes on the personality of its coach. Saleh has the biggest no nonsense personality of all of them
And FYI. In this “passing” league Tannehill is in t AFC Champ game throwing under 100 yards in each of their playoff games. Yesterday he threw 15 times total. But wait, you can only win by throwing the ball all over the field!!!!
