Deshaun Watson officially has requested a trade from the Houston Texans, per league sources. He actually did it weeks ago. Their new head-coaching hire, David Culley, has not and will not alter Watson’s thinking.

What really pisses me off is the Rats getting 2 compensatory 3rd rounders for the Texans hiring the guy.

January 29, 2021 at 9:55 am #20564Dawg E. DawgParticipantSo what do you guys think about Deshaun? Personally, I was worried the Steelers would find some way to get him, but it sounds like they’re going to go with Roethlisberger for at least another year. Which, that means Watson won’t be in the division, probably will go the NFC so that’s good with me.
Some have thrown around the Browns as a trade partner. If I’m the Texans, the Browns would be one team I would consider trading with, because they can actually offer a good QB in return. But, front the Browns standpoint, I would give Baker, but I think the Texans will want Baker + a high pick, and I wouldn’t do that.
January 29, 2021 at 12:05 pm #20565DawgSoldierParticipantI like his take, as it makes since to me.

January 29, 2021 at 2:19 pm #20567soupParticipantThe most insane thing we could possibly do is trade Mayfield to get Watson. QB is not the issue on this team. Offense is not the issue on this team.
Browns – 25.5 PPG scored/26.2 PPG allowed.
Texans – 24 PPG scored/29 PPG allowed
Baker tore up the league second half of the year and was better than Watson in that time. We made it to the divisional round of the playoffs.
So much of the game is based off chemistry and knowledge we’d be treading by water at best rather than improving at all. Take GOAT Tom Brady and how he struggled the first part of the year in a new offense.
Watson won’t be any different and he’s nowhere near the caliber of Brady (about to play in his 10th Super Bowl. Watson has won 1 playoff game.)
Couple that with also having to give up our 1st this year and a 1st next year along with Mayfield and the defense won’t improve and we may miss the playoffs.
Anyone who thinks that exchanging Mayfield for Watson (1-4 in his career vs Pitt, Balt, Cincy) will get us farther in the playoffs should have their head examined.

January 29, 2021 at 2:34 pm #20568MDP Sack AttackParticipantLol at any Browns fans who finally have a quarterback who not only gets you to the playoffs, not only wins a playoff game, not only wins that game against Pittsburgh (beating them two years in a row), and takes the defending champs to the wire in th next round, then instantly want to ditch him for the next shiny thing.
I think the Jets seem most likely. Best combination of need and draft capitol. #2 pick this year, and two first rounders next year. Seems like a no-brainer that they package two of those with Darnold, and still have a high pick next year to get a deep threat for Deshaun. Lots of cap room and a desirable destination for free agents.
January 29, 2021 at 3:49 pm #20569Dawg E. DawgParticipantI’m a big Baker guy, and I wouldn’t even call the Texans for fear of pissing Baker off.
BUT, in a hypothetical situation where I could get Watson for Baker and a 3rd?? I’d have to think about that long and hard. Any more and I’d pass immediately. But that’s the most I’d think about.
Now, let me qualify that statement by saying I don’t see the Texans agreeing to that deal. Not because Watson is that much better than Baker, but because there will be teams that offer the Texans an insane amount for Watson.
January 29, 2021 at 6:14 pm #20572BrownsFan4LifeParticipantWatson has a no trade clause and Cleveland isn’t one of the teams he is willing to be traded to and I wouldn’t do this trade anyway. The cost would be too much.
Giving up multiple first rounders isn’t going to improve the defense.
January 29, 2021 at 10:47 pm #20573the dudeParticipantI have completely changed my mind on Baker. He isn’t the best and never will be the best. Baker is doing too many things right and better than the best where he makes this offense better.
Hue Jackson is a loser.

Exactly.
It’ll be interesting if Miami and NYJ get into a bidding war for Watson. Both are stocked up on draft picks and can throw a QB in with the deal. It might come down to if the Texans prefer Tua or Darnold. If he’s traded, whoever gets Watson will be paying a king’s ransom. I’m glad it’s not us. Our offsnse if fine and will even improve with the players getting more time in the system. What the offense did this year with a new coach, new system, and no preseason was pretty amazing.

There’s no logic in destroying a locker room and chemistry. It’s not like Baker is Trubitsky. Baker is a top tier franchise QB.

Baker is a franchise qb, on that, I agree. Right now, Watson is better. He just is. Baker may be better in the long run, but in basically every measurable statistic, Watson is better. He lost one of the best receivers in the game this offseason, and his performance went UP.
Outside of Watson and Mahomes, I can’t think of another QB in the LEAGUE if consider trading Baker for. And like I said, I wouldn’t even call them about a trade for fear of pissing of Baker. But if they called… I’d listen.
January 31, 2021 at 12:11 am #20582MDP Sack AttackParticipantHowever, JJ Watt wants out as well, and he has a big contract with only one year left so I’d think he’ll be relatively affordable in trade. A second rounder? Hell yeah I’d trade that to unleash Garrett and Watt on quarterbacks.
January 31, 2021 at 11:59 am #20587IceKeymasterSadly I think Watt is on the downside of his career. The question is how fast he slides down that hill.
The question of trading Baker at this point is ridiculous. I AM worried about Watson getting to Pitt though…
January 31, 2021 at 5:40 pm #20592DawgSoldierParticipantevidently the Texans front office and watson will be engaged in a game of chicken to see who blinks 1st.
That will be real interesting.

February 1, 2021 at 2:58 pm #20616Dawg E. DawgParticipantThe juxtaposition in this thread is really outstanding. I’m apparently the only one that would consider trading for Watson. The stance on everybody else is:
1.) Watson is going to cost sooooo much that it wouldn’t be worth trading Baker for him.
2.) Baker is so good that we shouldn’t trade him for Watson.
Reread those two statements. They can’t both be true. If you believe #2, then Watson shouldn’t be expensive becuas me Bakers value should be close to his. If you believe #1, than you don’t think Baker is as nearly as good as Watson.

Rough math says Watson would add about 500 yards passing and 300 yards rushing over Bakers 2020 totals, just going off Watsons career averages. I would consider increasing your offense’s output by 13.5% to be “a new level.”

Different offenses. Now look at his average attempts per year to Bakers now look at his team rushing compared to this year. 100% different offense. Watson may come in this offense and suck and not have chemistry. Next year Baker could be NFL MVP. Look at Lev Bell on the Steelers then after. Tannehill Dolphins then Titans. Scheme and chemistry matter.

February 1, 2021 at 10:36 pm #20623soupParticipantWatson on 3rd down converted 55 1at downs on 128 passes 5TD 3 int. Mayfiled converted 52 on 125 passes. 6TD 4 int. Virtually indentical on 3rd down. That’s the key to maintaining drives.
I’ll say it again. Watson does not advance us to some magical new level. He takes us backwards for half a season learning anew offense. Just like Tom Brady did in TB this year. Difference is Brady is going to Super Bowl 10. Meanwhile Watson and Mayfield have the same number of playoff wins. QB isn’t our problem. Running on ice is pointless

I looked at his career average of 8.4 YPA, which is 1 yard more than bakers average, and over Bakers 489 attempts last year, i rounded to an additional 500 yards passing. I didn’t do the same for rushing, I just added his 300 yards more than Baker. Using the same approach, it would be 100 yards more, or 600 total additional yards of offense.
I don’t understand why it’s so hard for you to admit that Watson is better than Baker. He outperformed him last year despite having a MUCH worse offensive line, and a worse running game. And it wasn’t close.
February 2, 2021 at 9:36 am #20628Dawg E. DawgParticipantAnd to be clear, I have never said QB is a problem. Never. In fact, I’ve said the opposite, that we should lock Baker up.
BUT, Watson is probably to the best QB to ever be on the market. In the history of the NFL. If Baker progresses well in year 2 of this offense, best case scenario is that he becomes what Watson already is.

Watson MAY be better than Baker… now. 5 years from now I don’t think so. And look at Baker once the offense ‘clicked’ mid-Nov. 15 TD’s, 2 INT’s, 2400 yards (267 yards per game) 6 wins and 3 losses INCLUDING 2 PLAYOFF GAMES. There’s no reason at all to move away from Baker. When you have a top 10 QB in the league you don’t screw around and try to move up to a different top 10 QB.
BUT, Watson is probably to the best QB to ever be on the market.
Brady, Brees, and Manning immediately come to mind as guys who would disagree.
February 2, 2021 at 10:31 pm #20630Dawg E. DawgParticipantBrady and Manning were in their forties when they were free agents. Watson is 25. TWENTY FIVE. Brees was a good QB for San but he didn’t become Elite until he went to NOLA. And he was coming off an injury that made his playing future uncertain. If healthy, he would’ve been a Dolphin.
And Watson is not “another top 10 QB.” He is a top 5 QB. Baker is probably around the 12th ranked qb in the league, give or take.
Seriously, if it were said Patrick Mahomes instead of Watson, you wouldn’t think twice. You’d be all in with 6 first rounders. So you can’t say you wouldn’t trade Baker for a better QB.
Again, this is just a fun hypothetical for me, I’m not suggesting the Browns would actually do it. I’m just amazed at the orange-colored glasses in here that honestly think Baker is the better QB.
February 3, 2021 at 9:42 am #20631IceKeymasterBrady and Manning were in their forties when they were free agents. Watson is 25.
Both took their new teams to the Superbowl. You’re comparing Watson to the GOATS. There’s no comparison IMO.
From an analytical point of view there’s no reason to move away from Baker to any other QB. We’ve built a team around him based on his skillset and it’s finally locked in. We’re certainly not going to invest any new resources in a QB right now, it’s hardly an issue we need to solve. Any serious resources we invest will hopefully go towards shoring up our defense.
February 3, 2021 at 12:57 pm #20633Dawg E. DawgParticipantBrady and Manning went to loaded teams that had everything except a QB. If they were even 30, it’d be a different story.
As far as moving to “any other qb”, that implies you wouldn’t be interested in Mahomes if he were hypothetically available, and if that’s the case, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
