…for a conditional pick. Another first-rounder gone.
March 10, 2018 at 12:19 pm #11369soupParticipantNow this is an asinine trade. No logic whatsoever to this deal:
Trade compensation update: Browns get a mid-round 2019 pick from Patriots, and Patriots get DT Danny Shelton and a 2018 draft pick from Browns, per source.
So we get a useless pick for a big run stopper. The Patriots pick will be late. Very late (if it’s round 4 it’ll be around the 32nd pick of the round).
Freedom!!!
March 10, 2018 at 12:27 pm #11370the dudeParticipantSo this is what our wise owner has decided.
He has decided that our picks in the past were horrible and we will trade for unproven old players.
And this pick is one hundred percent why we were 0-16 and why the Pats were playing once again for the super bowl.
Fucking losers.
our owner has decided that the coach is good and players like danny shelton are bad.
garbage pure garbage. 0-16 again.
Hue Jackson is a loser.
March 10, 2018 at 12:32 pm #11371mike barnesParticipantLook at it this way when we drafted Shelton we needed a run stuffing NT then after one year we switched to a 4-3 base where you need DT’S that can penetrate and create pressure on the QB something Danny will never do on a consistant basis.

Good point, but trading a pick and him for a mid round pick? Don’t get that logic
Freedom!!!
March 10, 2018 at 1:10 pm #11373mike barnesParticipantMaybe our GM got what he could, either way we need more pressure on the QB both from the ends and up the middle, so it’s up to Dorsey to work some magic.
March 10, 2018 at 1:45 pm #11374Dawg E. DawgParticipantLook at it this way when we drafted Shelton we needed a run stuffing NT then after one year we switched to a 4-3 base where you need DT’S that can penetrate and create pressure on the QB something Danny will never do on a consistant basis.
This is exactly why I and Soup both hated when Gregg Williams was signed. But, I was berated and told that “all our guys are natural 4-3 guys and the transition will be seamless.” Nope.
We end up having o give away and replace guys like Demario Davis and now Danny Shelton and people wonder why we’re stuck at the bottom. Continuously spinning our wheels. We got one guys pluggging holes in the boat while another guy drills them. Stupid.
March 10, 2018 at 2:00 pm #11375IceKeymasterWe gave them a 5th round pick this year (essentially a 4th) and Shelton, and they gave us a 2019 3rd (probably essentially a 4th).
Not a big fan of this trade. I knew we’d move Shelton but I thought his value would be much higher.
This puts Chubb square in our sights at #4, as we can move Ogbah inside to DT and have the best young pass rushers in the league.
March 10, 2018 at 2:38 pm #11376DawgPoundDudeParticipantOut of all the wheeling and dealing this weekend, this is by far the weakest move made. While far from playing at a Pro Bowl level, Shelton was far from terrible. While I don’t mind him being moved, the compensation seems quite light.
Ol’ Bill just got his yearly fleecing in, and Dorsey was the sheep.
March 10, 2018 at 3:55 pm #11377ShooterModeratorI hate to be the dissenter on this, but let’s be honest here: Danny Shelton was a fatball that gave incredibly average play on the D-line. Nothing special in any way and truth be told, easily replaceable. The only thing that stands out about him is that he was a 1st rounder and was a really super cool and nice guy. But he sucked. He played nowhere near his draft price and at this point in his career is who he is. He’s not getting any better. He’s not gonna be in the Pro-Bowl next year. He is non-existent getting to the QB and he’s an average run stopper. One of the only things that made him effective was his size, which he could fill gaps with. But let’s not sit here and say that Danny Shelton was an awesome D-lineman because he wasn’t. He’s easily replaceable. We got a 3rd rounder for a guy that honestly probably wasn’t even worth that.
March 10, 2018 at 3:57 pm #11378ShooterModeratorThis puts Chubb square in our sights at #4
Sorry, but we’ll be taking a QB at 4 Ice. Cause Barkley lol.
March 10, 2018 at 6:01 pm #11384Dawg E. DawgParticipantDude, we gave up an early 5th for a late 3rd next year. That’s a fair trade. We basically got nothing for Shelton.
and while Shelton wasn’t a world beater, he was looking pretty good before Gregg Williams got here. But that’s what happens, we sign new coaches who bring new schemes and want new players and then we fire those coaches and the cycle repeats. That’s all this is.
March 10, 2018 at 6:54 pm #11388ShooterModeratorI just don’t see a loss. In 3 seasons he had 70 tackles and 1 sack. Wowee!!! We hardly ever heard his name called.
You want new coaches to stop getting rid of old players?? Stop drafting shitty players that play shitty and cause coaches to get fired and new coaches to come in and get rid of the shitty players. If Shelton played like Suh I guarantee you be wouldn’t be getting traded for a 3rd rounder.
March 10, 2018 at 7:17 pm #11389GABrownsFanParticipantI’m with Shooter. I would have preferred NE’s 3rd for Shelton straight up. But this trade really doesn’t bother me at all.
March 10, 2018 at 8:00 pm #11391mike barnesParticipantI’m not going to say Shelton’s a bad player he just needs to play in a 3-4 defense like we had when we drafted him, as far as moving Ogbah inside no way he’s at least a valuable rotational end Brantley and Ogunjobi played well enough in their limited time last year to warrant more snaps.
March 11, 2018 at 11:19 am #11397IceKeymasterShelton is a good DT in a 4/3, but an excellent NT in a 3/4. This shows that the coaches are actually getting the players they want to run their defenses. I am disappointed in what we got in return.
Ogbah became one of the best run stuffing DE’s in the league last year, but his pass rushing was not good. IMO he becomes a situational defensive player who would play DT on passing downs. Can you imagine on 3rd and long having Garrett, Ogbah, Ogunjobi, and Chubb on the field rushing the QB? That instantly becomes one of the scariest defensive fronts for a QB to face.
March 11, 2018 at 11:55 am #11398the dudeParticipantAnother clowns player playing for a super bowl….don’t you guys ever see the trend here….you guys always come out after a trade or a release and are like “he is better when utilized like this or he is washed up” and then we hear their names over the loud speakers beating up the clowns or in the playoffs.
the clowns releasing top draft picks is purely fucking retarded.
Hue Jackson is a loser.
March 11, 2018 at 2:04 pm #11399ShooterModeratorthe clowns releasing top draft picks is purely fucking retarded.
Really? What if those top draft picks purely fucking suck? Should we keep shitty players just because they were high draft picks? Should Weeden and Trent Richardson still be here because there were 1st rounders? Should Barkevious Mingo and Justin Gilbert be starting just because we took them high in the draft? Should we still be letting Johnny Manziel run the offense while Cam Erving anchors the offensive line?
The answer to all of those questions is “Holy Fuck NO!”
As I said in the other thread, if you want the Browns to stop getting rid of 1st round players, then they need to stop drafting shitty players in the 1st round. Not including last year, in the last 10 years of 1st round picks only 2 players are still on the team, Joe Thomas and Corey Coleman.
That is atrocious, inexcusable, and the exact reason why we have won 1 game in the past 2 seasons.
It’s not “retarded” as you call it to get rid of shitty top draft picks, it’s retarded to draft shitty players at the top year after year after year.
March 11, 2018 at 5:45 pm #11400soupParticipantMy overall point was Shelton isn’t shitty. That said, Mike Barnes explanation was spot on. As others also pointed out he excels in a 3/4

March 11, 2018 at 6:13 pm #11401ShooterModeratorhe excels in a 3/4
We have wildly different definitions of the word “excels”.
A guy that averages just under 25 tackles and half a sack per year is not what I would describe as “excelling”.
When a guy is “excelling” on the defensive line, I expect to hear his name called more than twice a game.
That’s just me though.

A 3/4 NT isn’t a stat position

March 11, 2018 at 11:05 pm #11407mike barnesParticipantSoup is right on in a 3-4 NT’s don’t get numbers and not hearing their name called is a good thing it’s not Shelton’s fault the team switched schemes after he was drafted, all in all I wish him the best moving forward. Same thing with Kizer it’s not his fault he was thrust into action instead of getting to sit and learn as we plan to do with the QB we’ll be taking this year, some people hate so much and I understand the frustration we as fans have but we’ve all got to realize that some players need time or the luck of playing in a stable system.
March 12, 2018 at 8:04 am #11410IceKeymasterNow Kizer’s gonna sit behind the best in the biz for a few years. Best situation he could ever be in.
March 12, 2018 at 12:31 pm #11413the dudeParticipantDouble our wins from last season with this move.
