Cut: Chris Hubbard. IMO Laam has out played him and is a FA and likely will be cheaper. Which is cap savings of 2.7 mil from the cut.

Trade: OBJ to the Jets for the 2nd pick in the 2nd round. The Jets have a ton of cap space and OBJ loves NYC. Browns get acap savings of 15.75 million added to the 24.3 million in cap room already on hand adds up to 42.75 millon.

PFF Rank 36 Shaquill Griffin Ranked 5th among potential FA Corners Sign for 4 years at 8 million a year.
A former third-round pick from the 2017 NFL Draft, Shaquill Griffin has been a starter for the Seahawks pretty much from Day 1, but it wasn’t until 2019 that the team really started to see plus play from him. That year, he posted a PFF grade of 78.0, and though he didn’t have any interceptions, he did record 13 pass breakups. He hasn’t managed to replicate that level of play this season, but he has been dealing with injuries and has still flashed high-end play, like against Miami where he didn’t allow a single reception all game long. Griffin is one of two Seattle cornerbacks set to hit free agency (Quinton Dunbar), and both have dealt with injury issues for most of the year. After a 2019 season in which Griffin registered a 77.0 defensive grade and 76.0 coverage grade, he slid to 64.1 and 63.6, respectively, in 2020.

PFF Rank 67 Malik Hooker Ranked 7th among potential FA Safeties Sign for 2 years at 3 million with incentives to make it 6 and a club option of 2 more years. Hooker has dealt with significant injury after significant injury, and this concern existed even before the 2020 season, which was lost to a torn Achilles. He’s never really provided the intended playmaking ability in the middle of the field, but he’s also played in a Colts scheme that has been heavy on two-high safety coverages. Hooker still may be a better fit in a true single-high safety role where he takes good angles on downfield throws. He’s looked out of place when forced into one-on-ones with receivers or when needing to react quickly from two-high alignments. His best season saw him grade at 81.6 in coverage in 2018, though the other 1200 or so snaps have him graded in the mid-60s. He’s worth a look in a new system that could get the most out of his downfield playmaking skill set.

PFF Rank 89 Gareon Conley Ranked 17th among potential FA Corners Sign for 4 years at 3 million a year.
A former first-round pick, Conley has had his ups and downs, grading out at 64.5 and 64.0 in his two full seasons. He missed all of the 2020 season. Conley is better in man coverage, as he’s graded in the 69th percentile in single coverage compared to just the 37th percentile in zone since entering the league. He’s also forced incompletions on 22.2% of his targets, the second-best rate in the NFL since 2017. Conley is worth a look in a man-heavy system.

PFF Rank 97 Breshad Perriman Ranked 15th among potential FA Wide Recievers Sign for 2 years at 6 million a year.
Perriman, a former first-round draft pick, looked as if he had put it all together late in the 2019 season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but then he joined the New York Jets. Perriman couldn’t avoid being tarnished by New York in 2020, and his 63.1 overall PFF grade was back to his baseline of disappointment. Perriman dropped only three passes, but he caught just 53.6% of the targets sent his way. With his height, weight and speed combination, there is still a lot to like about his potential in the right situation. The Jets, obviously, were not the right fit.

My Take on: Shaquill Griffin is a 6 ft CB with 4.4 speed that the Browns can afford due to a down year because of some injuries. He is also obviously familiar with the Seattle cover 3 scheme Joe Woods runs so it’s not like he isn’t a scheme fit.

My Take on: Malik Hooker when came out IMO was best single high free safties prospect I’d seen in a long time. For some reason the colts as him to be something he really wasn’t all that good at. A dual interchangeable safety in a cover 2 style defense. Which made no sence to me. Personally I believe his to significant injuries were contrtibuted to the turf in Indi and him playing out of position. So for the Browns Hooker would be single high free safety, Delphit would be the nickel safety and Harrison would be the strong safety. With Joeseph being retained for a few years as depth/rotational player and Redwine bening Depth as well. Sendajo is never spoken of again.

My Take on: Gareon Conley, plays well in man and is so so in zone. But forcing incompletions at 1 out of 5 clip is worth a look in man heavy scheme. The other thing he actually has over Ward and obviously Greedy is availabilty. He has started 26 games out of 31 he was available for according to PFR.

My Take on Breshad Perriman, a few years ago he and Baker had some budding chemistry as a go to deep threat. Then the trade for OBJ happpened and he wanted out because he wanted a shot a being “the guy”. So the Browns and him parted ways amicably. With the OBJ trade in this mock the Browns will need a new deep threat. So I got one with history with Baker who has good size speed and for almost a 3rd of the price for OBJ.

    Browns Draft
    Round 1 Pick 26
    Jaelen Phillips*, DE, Miami
    Height: 6-5. Weight: 266.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.7.
Phillips really impresses when you flip on the tape. He has a lot of upside. On the year, Phillips totalled 45 tackles, eight sacks, an interception and three passes defended. Phillips has a good skill set with strength to shed blocks and hold his ground in run defense. He really improved as a pass rusher over the course of the 2020 season, and he has quality speed to go with length and strength.

    Round 2 Pick 34
    Chazz Surratt, ILB, North Carolina
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 230.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.54.
Surratt was a First Team All-American selection after leading the Tar Heels defensively with 91 tackles (7.5 for loss), six sacks and an interception. Since transitioning to linebacker from quarterback prior to the 2019 season, Surratt has twice been a First Team All-ACC performer–racking up 207 tackles and 12.5 sacks. The kid has wheels smarts and can tackle.

    Round 2 Pick 59
    Tedarrell Slaton, DT, Florida
    Height: 6-5. Weight: 333.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.5.
Slanton is massive human being that is strong as a bull and will massively upgrade the Browns run defense and help keep it’s LB’s clean, as he demands a double team on every play. His pass rush is a bull rush that collapses the pocket and an swim move.

    Round 3 Pick 90
    Elijah Molden, CB, Washington
    Height: 5-10. Weight: 190.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.42.
One of the better nickel corners in the draft IMO. Molden also plays the run well and blitzs of the edge well as well. Could compete for starting time as rookie

    Round 3 Pick 92
    Bubba Bolden*, S, Miami
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 200.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
Bolden is a versatile jack of all trades master of none safety. Which makes him ideal depth in a 3 safety nickel D.

    Round 4 Pick 101
    Nico Collins, WR, Michigan
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 215.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.45.
Collins was never very good at Mich because the QB play was so bad. ANd the team so poorly coached. He has good size and speed plus nice catch radius. He will likely excell on deep routes and in the redzone.

    Round 4 Pick 123
    Pete Werner, ILB/OLB, Ohio State
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 239.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.74.
All around good LB with descent coverage ability that stout against the run.

    Round 5 Pick 153
    Reed Blankenship, S, Middle Tenn.
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 203.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.5.
Versatile safety from a small school that play FS or even some nickel. He will be valuable depth and a good special teams player.

    Round 6 Pick 187
Raymond Johnson III, DE, Georgia Southern
    Height: 6-3. Weight: 270.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.74.
Johnson III has a nation-best PFF 91.6 overall grade, including an 89.6 grade against the run. He was fifth on the team in tackles with 37, including 14.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. He had a school-record 13 quarterback hurries and also has a pass break up, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. Classic big fish in a small pond.

    Round 7 Pick 222
    Khyiris Tonga, DT, BYU
    Height: 6-4. Weight: 321.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.48.
Another humungous DT to help with with stopping the run.

    Thoughts?

Definitely no reason to cut Hubbard. He is going to make 3.75M this year and depth is a good thing. Hubbard plays both tackle and guard but I believe he is better suited for guard. Lamm plays tackle. Neither is going to start but it is nice to have depth and both provide that.

    I wouldn’t trade OBJ.

Your draft was pretty much right on as far as positions go. Haven’t done enough research to ping in on any specific players though.

Going to be an interesting offseason for sure.

    Go Browns.

We definitely should keep Hubbard and Lamm both, unless we find a serious upgrade to one or the other. They know our system, and both seem to keep themselves extremely well prepared and ready to play whenever needed.

    Same with OBJ.

I would probably let Gustin walk. He looked solid last year but didn’t really do anything this year, even with plenty of opportunity. DE depth behind Garrett and Vernon needs some serious upgrading.

    I like your draft.
