    Embrace the Suck

We’ve reached the 7th step in our 12 step program; acceptance. No longer are we suffering under the delusion of hope. Put away the thoughts of post season play, our team is not good. Many Cleveland pundits are blaming it on the system, or the playcalling, or the coaching. Nonsense. Our players are not as good as their players. Our O-linemen are not good enough to stop Philly’s D-linemen. The right side of our line is again horrific and Erving is a disaster at center. Really the only thing that can help this team win this season would be an expansion draft where we get to grab players off of other teams. This is not going to be our year.

Don’t jump off the edge just yet, there are some reasons to be excited for the future. Terrell Pryor has made me a believer. He has come from nowhere to become a legit starting WR in this league. He still has work to do but he is a matchup nightmare. Nassib was my player of the game and he hadn’t even won a starting spot going in. If we get some good DT’s Nassib can be a great pass rusher. His stats (3 tackles, 1 sack) don’t come anywhere close to telling the story of this rookie’s first NFL experience. He was constantly working behind the line of scrimmage and disrupting plays. Ogbah didn’t disappoint either, and was also more productive than the stats show (1 tackle).

The front office has been telling us this is going to take more than one season. No one is saying we expect to be in the playoffs this year so we shouldn’t feel we’ve been oversold. The question is can we win enough games so that the staff keeps their jobs and we can be consistent from one year to the next. How many wins should it take for coaches to keep their jobs?

This team is not a lost cause. While Erving fucked up, his blocking wasn’t terrible. Problem is, you can tell he isn’t a natural at the position, which is going to take time to get the feel for. And if you watch a replay of that silly fake punt, you’ll notice that he was the fella hiking the ball, which was fucked, and fucked up the play’s timing, which…well, you know. Either he gets his shit together, or he’ll be lucky to take over the spot where the new Greco vacancy is created.

There were a lot of missed opportunities on offense yesterday, even by those who are normally sure handed (Barnidge, anyone?), and that tends to “bleed into other issues” (Hue’s words, or close enough)…suddenly the QB play isn’t so good. Suddenly 10 other guys sense it, doubt starts to creep in, and 11 other guys smell blood in the water and lo and behold, first sack of the game (and Thomas was the beaten guy, if I’m not mistaken). Couple that with the stupidity of an unnecessary safety, and and everyone mentally checks out…which, if you’re a Browns fan, you should know exactly what I mean.

But in my personal, so valuable opinion…I’ve known all along that this wasn’t going to be an easy season to watch. But, take heart. One thing I admire about this coaching staff is that they have an energy that doesn’t quit. While this young team struggles, this is exactly the kind of coach that needs to be coaching these kids. I think regardless of how this season turns out, as long as the team shows signs of improving, Hue will be here next year. Haslam seems pretty committed to him, but there’s 15 more games to go. If he doesn’t have us playing like a team by then…his head will likely be added to a growing pile of skulls.

And Ice, you couldn’t have named the thread any better. Because we indeed suck…and yet we can improve. So, prepare for “one of those” seasons folks, because we’ve been here before.

I feel like Andy Dufresne from Shawshank the fist day he got his rock hammer.

On the bright side, it only took him 20 years to get here:

After that boys, it’s Zihuatanejo all fuckin’ day!

The hardest part of all of this is going to be explaining to my wife why I’m hanging up a poster of Rita Hayworth in the living room.

    Cavs

And Indians are 7 games up in the division with 20 games left. Magic number of 14 to clinch the division.

It’s all about perspective. Sports are great in CLEVELAND!

I’m listening to a Hue press conference right now…someone asked about the special teams players that aren’t here and if they were missed during Sproles’ 40 yard return.

Answer: “It’s not about the guys that are gone, it’s about the guys that are here. We gotta go cover.”

    Gotta love that.
