Very balanced so far. Griffin all the reps with 1st team, McCown none.
Very fair. It’s clear that this is open and really anyone can take the job. Sigh.
I hate that shit. If you’re going to call it a “competition”, then make it one. If you’re just going to hand a guy a position, as the Browns clearly are regardless of who or what is best for the team, then just come out and say that. I knew with the way that Hue Jackson fawned all over RG3 when we worked him out that he was unquestionably going to be our starter no matter how good or bad he looked, so don’t sit here and blow smoke and make shit up. RG3 is our starter, was going to be our starter from the moment the ink went onto his contract, and that’s that.
Not only is he our starter, but I think he’s also going to have quite a long leash as well.
Yay!
August 4, 2016 at 9:16 am #5443IceKeymasterBFT is having a competition to be the next owner of BFT. It’s an open competition but I’m rumored to be in the lead.
A few months ago I said that there’s no way we’re signing RG3 to be our starter. It didn’t make any sense at all. Shooter saw that it didn’t make any sense and bravely said that the ONLY reason we’re signing him is to be our starter. Shooter was right, I was wrong. Let’s hope we’re all wrong about how good RG3 can be, because universally I don’t think expectations are high.
August 4, 2016 at 9:37 am #5444ShooterModeratorThere are even rumblings coming out of Berea that McCown may not even make the team now.
My expectations are so low right now that I honestly feel Weedens first game is in danger of being eclipsed on the suck scale.
August 4, 2016 at 11:59 am #5445soupParticipantWho cares? Let Hue do what he does. We have a legitimate head coach. This guy got 1 year to coach in Oakland. So what did he do? Stated 0-4 and finished the year 8-8 =- WITH A TEAM THAT HAD LESS TALENT THEN THE CURRENT BROWNS.
McCown will get a concussion from putting shampoo on his head so we’d delay the inevitable.
Bottom line – I’d rather hand the job to RG3 for the entire year and if by the end he still sucks – then we use the #1 pick on a QB.
EDIT: Also, the Cowboys need a back-up QB and the Browns could very well be shopping McCown anyway. So why give a guy 1st team reps if you are planning on trading him?

August 4, 2016 at 7:39 pm #5449ShooterModeratorWho cares?
Well I do. Because #1, RG3 is just total garbage. I don’t give a shit what kind of QB guru/whisperer/fixer/maker Hue is, he ain’t fixing that, and it’s going to be really, really ugly.
More importantly though, #2, it erodes his trust. He said there would be a competition, and then there wasn’t one. If RG3 is your guy then that’s fine, I don’t have a problem with that if that’s the case (the process, not the guy. The guy I have a problem with but that’s a seperate issue). But just say so. Say he’s the starter from the jump and then that’s that. Don’t lie though and say it’s open and then put on a sham that makes everyone know immediately that you’re completely full of shit. That’s bush. In the eyes of veterans, how does something like that look? Players see shit like that and it immediately sows the seeds of distrust. If Hue tells a linebacker “work hard, you’ve got a chance to start” can he be believed? Why lie?
I knew RG3 was going to be our starter the minute Hue raved about him after we worked him out. Just say that’s why you signed him, it’s not that hard. No need to shaft a guy like McCown who is nothing but professional.
I care about that. I care A LOT about that. It shows who you are as a coach, and that’s a shitty start.
August 4, 2016 at 10:09 pm #5451the dudeParticipantshooter our last decade plus of qbs is trash. let rg3 show us he is trash before we call the trashman.
mccown has no future as the qb of the browns. he should not even be considered to be a starter. rg3 is junk, then dump him. nothing new.
Hue Jackson is a loser.
August 5, 2016 at 8:53 am #5452IceKeymasterBut guys this IS new. Instead of wasting a way-too-high draft pick on a garbage QB, we got one on the open market for a nickel. We passed up on choosing the QB with the 2nd overall pick because no one was sold on him. That’s progress guys. We still have garbage at QB but we are awash in draft picks now and got a WR who looks pretty solid.

Okay, I’m fine with that. Completely fine with that process.
But don’t lie about it. Don’t tell a veteran player “you’re going to compete for the starting job”, then never give him the ball or let him compete. It just looks really, really bad.
Maybe this is rubbing me the wrong way more than it should. I’m trying to completely remove my bias against Griffin from the situation, but doesn’t this strike any of you as troublesome? Am I overreacting on this?
Again, if Grif is your guy and that’s that, fine. Just say so. Don’t tell lies to your players though.
I dunno, maybe it’s just me and this isn’t a big deal at all. I just think it looks bad.
August 5, 2016 at 11:57 am #5457soupParticipantAll you know is what Hue told the media. You don’t know what he told the team/players. Remember that. Also know the people saying McCown has looked way better in camp are the people who praised Johnny Trash. AKA – they know nothing about the game.
EDIT: Looking back further I see nowhere that Jackson says there is a QB competition. He talks about earning spots. Everyone else is saying “QB competition.” He’s just saying he’s not naming a starter yet. I guarantee you he knows who he’s going with and I guarantee you so do the players. He knows he’ll name Griffin starter and Griffin and McCown both know it too.

I dont really know what that means. He tells the media there’s a QB competition, but tells the players there isn’t one? Why? What’s the point of doing that?
Looking back further I see nowhere that Jackson says there is a QB competition.
Jackson was asked whether there would be open competition for the quarterback job in camp. His answer: “Yeah, if you want to see it that way — yes it is.” – ESPN
“When it’s time to make [a decision], I’ll make it,” Jackson said. “I’m being honest. It’s still way soon. I know that’s what everyone’s worried about, but I’m not. There are no games yet. I think it’s a competition, so we can just let things play themselves out. – Monday Morning QB
He knows he’ll name Griffin starter and Griffin and McCown both know it too.
I am in complete agreement with that, but again, why say there’s a competition? Just name your guy and be done with it, no need for games and lies.
August 7, 2016 at 12:06 am #5461mike barnesParticipantWhen RG3 made the Earth move for Hue the competition was over, maybe it’s not a bad thing after all we got a 5th year player with talent who spent a year healing up from a knee injury and benching by a coaching staff that was not invested in him in any way. Now will he be the same qb that lit up the nfl as a rookie or will he be the qb who limped off the field in the 2015 pre season, i’d settle for some where in between that would be light years better than what we’ve had to endure in the past couple of years.
i’ll put my money on coach Hue and his staff to do this right.
August 7, 2016 at 2:01 am #5464DawgSoldierParticipantRG3 is an air raid QB that can’t read a defense but can run like a deer. He has no pocket awareness or ability to slide and reset.
McCown is EASILY the better QB of the 2. But McCown doesn’t have a future as a player in this league for very long. So we are STUCK with this reclamation project from a dumpster fire of his own making.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love RG3 to pull lazarus and resurrect his career. As locle strong black conservative leader in cleveland would be awesome. As much as I like RG3 the person, he is a pure waste of god given talent because he isn’t a field general. He is one or 2 read and scramble college Qb masquerading as a NFL starter.

An indisputable fact. And I don’t mean a “Soup” fact, I mean a real one.
Grif had him at hello lol.
Now will he be the same qb that lit up the nfl as a rookie or
Or. He will be some very bad form of or.
August 7, 2016 at 11:46 pm #5468MavParticipantIt took 4 years. But we finally will have the qb I said we should of drafted four years ago when we failed and ended up with T POOR. I agree with Shooter though to a degree. Its a farce of a competition. Unless the competition is that they want to see RG3 lose the job, because being flat out honest, we already know what McCown is. They have a decade of tape on the guy. What we don’t know is if RG3 can be molded by Hue. if that’s the case, I’m okay with that as well.
August 8, 2016 at 8:47 am #5471IceKeymasterRG3 has been good enough that for once we aren’t talking about that QB we drafted this year. What’s his name again?
August 8, 2016 at 10:08 am #5478DawgstyleParticipantThe competition is over. Griffin is the starter. I would not be surprised if McCown gets traded. I think they will most likely roll with Austin Davis as the back up and Cody Kessler as the number 3 (I would rather see McCown mentor Kessler, but it is what it is – McCown’s time in the league is almost over).
For the record, while no one is talking about him, I like Cody Kessler a lot. I think he might actually be what a lot of us hoped Charlie Frye and Colt McCoy could become. Unfortunately for RG3, I think his progression will mirror that of Cousins, and Kessler will end up taking the starting job from RG3 if we don’t absolutely tank and draft a QB in the first (I like Brad Kaaya out of Miami).
At least it should be an interesting year.
