This is a very interesting article. It’s linked only because there are moving gifs showing plays with RG3. Check it out.

OK…I’m on board with this signing. It seems to me that if the guy can stay healthy, he might be exactly what we need to drag ourselves out of this gutter we’ve been in. But that’s the biggest factor and knock he has on him- staying healthy.

While he might make some plays and even win some games…I still wouldn’t expect much from the team this year. Still…as far as rebuilds go, it’s a start.

By the way, decent article there Soup.

Look, I love a good redemption story. I love a good comeback. And most of all, I love the Browns. Nothing would make me happier than having RG3 become the QB so many people thought he would be, absolutely dominate, and take the Browns to awesomeness. Nothing. I’d cry gigantic crocodile tears of pure liquid joy.

But some things need to be looked at realistically here.

#1, How damaged is this guy? Both physically and psychologically. His knee has been shredded twice, and his ankle was mangled. Add to that the fact that in just 3 years he went from ROY and leading his team to a division title, to being an inactive afterthought at the very end of the bench. Where is his mindset after that? How does/can/will he react?

#2 Most consider that rookie year to be what I thought it to be. A fluke. Does he have talent? Yes. A ton. But just like I questioned Johnny on whether his talents and game could transfer to the NFL, I said the same about RG3. So far, we’ve seen clearly that they cannot. I find it to be at best, and incredible longshot for a QB to completely reinvent himself, at 26, at QB, and re-learn how to play the position a different way, and be successful at it. I mean, how many times has that been done? How many times have we seen it? (That’s a legitimate question. Name someone for me, I honestly can’t think of one).

#3 How many times have we seen a QB completely flame out, and then magically ressurect his career somewhere else with great success? Especially one drafted that high? Anyone? Ever?

There’s a real good reason why it doesn’t and hasn’t happened. Guys get those 2nd, 3rd, and sometimes even 4th chances at QB. That happens all the time. Especially because of the premium on the position. But they all end with the same result: The current team realizing why the former team cut him.

#4 How many times have we read this story here in Cleveland? Starting with Ty freaking Detmer. Jeff Garcia. Trent Dilfer. Jake Delhomme. Even McCown. All guys who at one point had success, or in Detmers case hype, then went into full-blown suck mode, but for some reason the boys upstairs here in C-town thought “hey, this guy still has it, and this is going to get us where we need to be”. How’d they all work out? Did they get it back, or did they fall further down the suck hole? We know the answer. I’d like someone to explain to me how and why this is any different than all of them.

I know that sounds pessimistic. I know. I get it. I’m no real fan of sounding like that. In fact, I hate it. But I’m realistic. And this has to be looked at for what it is: Yet another retread with very limited potential being brought in to kick the tires on a gigantic trailer of false hope.

I see no positives in this move, and in fact, see nothing but hassle. I see nothing but QB controversy, the last fucking thing this team needs. But there it is, in full bloom. If we draft a QB, sweet Jesus. The 1st pick RG3 throws, fans will be screaming for the kid. Bring in the kid, his first pick, everyone will be calling for RG3. The fanbase will divide, the coaching staff will, the front office will, we’ll lose a bunch of games, and everyone gets fired. Ya know how I know that? Cause I’m a Browns fan, and I’ve officially lost track of how many times I have seen that very thing. But that’s exactly what will happen.

If we don’t, holy mother of God the expectations of Griffin will be completely unattainable. Start the season 2-4 and this town will absolutely eviscerate him. Then they’ll probably go after his family, as our classy fans are want to do when they’ve turned and gone down the road of hatred for a guy. He’ll be absolutely destroyed, because there is no patience of any kind left in this town. None. It’s win, win now, win well, and win a lot, or get the fuck outta here because you’re a bum, a waste, and a pile of garbage.

I hope I’m wrong, I really really do, but something tells me that sometime around December, I’m going to be talking about this again with a tone of “seriously who didn’t see that coming?”

    It is. Soup, it is.

And I mean again, I hate to sound like I do. I really hate being so negative. I want to be excited. I’d even settle for encouraged.

But I’m not. Especially if we draft a QB. My God I just see that as nothing but disaster. For starters, Griffin isn’t at that “I’m gonna be a backup for the rest of my career in this league” point yet. He not only wants to be a starter, but also thinks he can be a starter, and further wants to prove a lot of people wrong and shut people up. He’s got that chip on his shoulder. That doesn’t bode well in the QB room if the organzation specifically drafts a guy to take “your” job, regardless of his comments about it. He’s not McCown, who in my opinion was and is the absolute perfect guy to make the transition. Smart, solid player, isn’t out there playing for himself and is instead playing for his guys, isn’t playing for money or stats or Pro-Bowls or any of that stuff, and is an complete professional on the field and in the building. He knows, accepts, and excels in his role. RG3 is the anti-McCown in that regard.

Also, is RG3 really the guy you want a new QB “taking under his wing”? RG3 was an incredibly entitled, pampered, coddled and arrogant player who alienated many players, coaches, and FO personnel during his 4 years in Washington. This isn’t a debate, they are well chronicled, talked about, and mocked and derided by current and former players, coaches, and analysts. “Humble” and “team player” are not descriptions used when it comes to RG3. Off-putting and prima donna are. Couple that with the fact that he wants to start and be dominant again, I don’t see how in any way that is a productive environment for a new player coming into the league to be under counsel from.

I just don’t understand the thought process, and don’t get the upside that some are seeing.

Alex Smith I think would fit your criteria. But he’s a special kind of awesome.

    Not really.

#1 Smith wasn’t really a bust. He’s been a consistent, if unspectacular QB his entire career. Not a superstar, but doesn’t suck. Can get you to the playoffs, and once there, who knows. Not exactly what you hope for in a #1 overall pick, but he’s not a bust by any stretch.

#2 he never flamed out at all either. He got injured and never got his job back. In fact, he was peaking when he got hurt too. Got dealt to KC and picked up almost right where he left off. Was literally the exact same guy he was in San Fran, and has delivered exactly what the Chiefs were hoping they were going to get from him.

That’s not even similar to Griffin in almost any way.

Drew Bres at SD then at NO. Might be the exception you are looking for.

As for RG3…I think he is here just to take hits so Wentz can sit and learn while the newly reconstructed OL gels.

Steve Young. That’s a pretty good one. He sucked in Tampa Bay and had to ride the pine in Frisco for a while before he got another shot.

Plunkett turned it around in Oakland, I’ll count that one too.

I don’t get the Unitas reference. He was a 9th round draft pick who became an NFL all-time great in Baltimore. Almost right away so…..

Don’t just take my word for it.

    It seems I’m not alone

Seriously, did this guy just re-write everything I’ve said?
