Happy? Sad?
I am hesitantly content. I like both the trade downs. Going from 2 to 15 netted us an extra 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in 2017 and more in 2018. We were still able to grab the top WR in the draft.
I can’t tell you if Corey Coleman is the next Steve Smith Sr or not, but the Browns had their pick of any WR in this draft and he was their choice.
Analytics says if your draft picks have as much chance of working out as a lottery ticket, the best move is to acquire more lottery tickets.
April 29, 2016 at 10:10 am #5088BillWunkleParticipantFirst off . . .
I was pissed because my guy, Carson Wentz, went second overall. All I could do is keep saying to myself, “THAT SHOULD’VE BEEN OUR FREAKING QUARTERBACK FOR THE NEXT FIFTEEN YEARS!!!!!!!!”
Then I saw that DeForest Buckner was still on the board after the Ratbirds took Ronnie Stanley instead of Tunsil. My mind went into panic mode at the prospect of the Browns taking the Oregon DE because all I could think of how the Buckeyes O-line abused the Ducks D-line. Then the Niners took him off the board and I immediately took a huge sigh of relief.
Then there was the trade down from #8 . . .
When I saw that the Browns had traded the pick, I immediately told my wife, “Tennessee wants a tackle”, Naturally even before I saw that the trade was with the Titans. I thought it was a move for Laremy Tunsil in spite of the gas mask video. Then they took Jack Conklin and I said, “WOW!!!!!”
Forwarding to the 15th pick . . .
At this point I thought that the Browns were in perfect position to take whatever receiver they wanted. Naturally, I thought it would be Laquon Treadwell, but when I heard the Commissioner say the name of Corey Coleman, I was cool with it. This kid may be only 5′-10-1/2″ tall, but he’s got a 40″ vertical. That means he’ll get more 50-50 balls. He’s also a legitimate deep threat. And now, the more I think about it, the more I love the pick.
Well done, Sashi . . . now all you’ve got to do is hit big on all the picks in rounds two and three. After all, this is a “What have you done for me lately?” type of business.
Am I going mad, or did the word THINK escape your lips? You were not hired for your brains, you hippopotamic landmass!
April 29, 2016 at 10:27 am #5090ShooterModeratorI still have far too much interest in the triple pickle right now than I do our draft pick.
Take from that whatever you will.
April 29, 2016 at 10:40 am #5091IceKeymasterApril 29, 2016 at 11:35 am #5092DawgPoundDudeParticipantNothing says “great pick” quite like three watermarked pickles…I’ll say that.
Analytics say “get the guys who get touchdowns on offense, tackles and turnovers on defense”. That’s exactly what happened here. 20 touchdowns in one season? The only WR we’ve had that came close to that was Braylon Edwards with 16. Sure, you can smear his route running all you like (though he claims he ran NFL-style routes in high school), but if he’s that predictable running 3-4 different routes and STILL caught all those touchdowns…? Imagine when Jackson and Hamilton (who is going to be a HUGE boon to this team’s WRs) get this kid running complex routes by next season.
And just giving my piece here, but I’m not expecting much this season from us (Vegas has us going 0-16), but I see this pick as getting exactly what we wanted, and STILL walking away with not only picks for this year, but the next two drafts!
Very well done, Sashi. A+ in my book.
April 29, 2016 at 12:18 pm #5093ShooterModeratorI’ll be honest, I have no idea who the kid is. All i keep hearing though is “Steve Smith”. I’m certainly not going to be upset if that’s the case. Someone else said Hines Ward.
It seems many of the networks/mags/websites think we made a great pick and were winners on the 1st day so, I’m not going to blast them or poo poo the pick because I’m ignorant to who he is. We’re going to be picking every 5 minutes today too, so that doesn’t suck.

My friend wasn’t lying!
Also, I’m very happy with the Coleman pick. The kid plays above his size, and has the most potential to become a true #1 of any WR in this draft.
Now we need one, maybe two offensive tackles, another WR, and a QB (if our guys have the opportunity to pick one they like).
And then there’s the defense…
April 29, 2016 at 12:30 pm #5095DawgstyleParticipantI have to say that I agree with Wunkle. Corey Coleman is a freakish athlete that tends to grow on you the more you think about him. For the record Ice, I do think this guy is going to be in the Steve Smith Sr/Antonio Brown mold of a WR.
He has legit 4.35 speed, lead all receivers in every event he competed in at the combine with 17 reps on the bench press, 40.5″ vertical leap and 129″ broad jump. His production was insane. Coleman accounted for 36% of all of Baylor’s passing yards with 1363 yards and 45.45% of their pass scoring offense with 20 TDs.
I think this is truly a case of the Browns getting the BPA (according to their board) who also happened to fit a need. I’m looking forward to seeing what he does in Orange and Brown.
818 mph. 13,723 feet. 3 second burn.
https://youtu.be/hy-3bb1Nqy0April 29, 2016 at 12:49 pm #5096ShooterModeratorI know some are harping on his size, but he’s taller than Antonio Brown and the same size as Odell Beckham Jr, so there’s that. Combine that with 4.3 speed and a 40 inch vertical leap, it’s hard not to at least go “okay, that doesn’t look to shabby”.
Unless of course you’re Soup. If you’re Soup, you just spent a few thousand dollars on a hair transplant just so you could pull it all out again.
April 29, 2016 at 1:05 pm #5097Dawg E. DawgParticipantI was pretty down on him initially, based solely on his size, and the fact that I’m sick of watching so many short WRs.
But, he does look the part, and he plays with much more physicality than I expected. Based on his size and 40 speed, I assumed he’d be a track star like a Darrius Heward-bey, which is exactly why I didn’t want Will Fuller. I don’t think that’s necessarily the case.
those guys, like travis benjamin, look like they could be blown over by a stiff breeze. Coleman is more stout. Looks like he plays nasty, and I can definitely see where the Steve Smith comparisons come in.
Also, if you look at what the Browns traded to move from 2 to 15 vs. the Titans trade from 1 to 8, I’d say the Browns did a MUCH better job getting value in their trades.
One last comment, I really liked Coleman’s line about size after he was drafted. “If size were all that matters, the elephant would be the king of the jungle.” Love it.

My friend wasn’t lying!I saw that! News broke here first everyone. And none of the news outlets are reporting (yet) that he was boo’d out of the bar.

Hopefully by October Soup will again be eating his words.

Maybe you can talk him in to a Bitter Browns Fan article.
But it’s hard to argue- if this is the guy we wanted all along as well as picking up some gems, I’m all for it. Let’s just hope they can keep getting good picks.
April 29, 2016 at 3:12 pm #5101DawgSoldierParticipantthe trade down and accumulation of draft capital was masterful.
And still got the 1st WR off the board. Now was he the top WR in this draft…..? Cases could be made for Doctson and Treadwell….but I am guessing Coleman’s ability as a return man gave him a touch more value and made him the selection.
After all ST TD’s count too.

April 29, 2016 at 3:14 pm #5102MDP Sack AttackParticipantWith an inch in height and 20 lbs of weight separating them, saying Benjamin is the same size as Coleman is akin to saying Hartline is the same size as Josh Gordon. So therefor we already had a #1 WR ready to go.

I know lol. He’s so fun.
