Okay I have been going over film and commentary over Hooker and Garrett.

I came to a couple surprising conclusions that the analytics dept from the Browns may come up with.

A FS that can play single high safety and cover the middle by themselves is more RARE than a dominant right edge rusher.

There are what 2’3..4 tops of NFL FS’s that can play center field in base D cover 3 and be a dominant difference maker.

There’s what 10-12 Right edge rushers that get double digit sacks on a yearly basis

Now based idea a FS like Hooker with his RARE range and ball skills does that rareness make him more valuable then Garret as a pass rusher/run defender.

Seattle drafted Earl Thomas 1st when creating THAT defense as the FS is the key stone to that D.

I gotta wonder if this being considered at all in Berea?

Without seeing the numbers to back this up, I can neither agree or disagree. But, for the sake of argument, let’s assume you’re right. So what? I’m not saying that that statistic is meaningless, but rather, what are you asserting it implies? Is your assertion that having such a free safety on your roster will result in more turn overs and potentially better average field position?

Additionally, are you also asserting that Hooker is as skilled (or more so) than Earl Thomas? Seattle took Thomas at #14 in 2010, even Eric Berry wasn’t taken until the 5th pick. Washington took Sean Taylor at 5th as well. Do you feel that Hooker is in that league?

So, if you’re saying that Eric Berry, Earl Thomas, Sean Taylor are worth consideration at #1 because Edge Rushers are more common than ball hawking coverage safeties, I’d be willing to consider that argument. If you’re arguing that Malik Hooker is in the same category as Eric Berry, Earl Thomas or Sean Taylor, I think you’re going to have a much tougher sell.

You also need to factor in the nature of the injury that Hooker sustained and how much playing time you should realistically expect from a player coming off such an injury.

Hooker lets you have 8 in box at all times as he doesn’t need another safety to cover the middle as he can do that by himself because of his range and instincts. Thus giving the defense a numbers advantage in all but short yardage formations. If a player can take the responsibilities of 2 players thus freeing up others IMO that is extremely valuable

In terms of having a safety that can play “center field”, I don’t disagree. That said, as Wunkle has pointed out, his injury history gives me cause for concern that he can be that player (not only initially, but ever). I don’t disagree with your assessment of the position, just the player.
