The Browns and assistant general manager Eliot Wolf parted ways today, and in related news, Wolf’s father had some harsh criticism for the Browns’ analytics-heavy approach to building their team.
Ron Wolf, the Hall of Fame former General Manager of the Packers, told Chris Mortensen of ESPN that he disdains the way analytics have affected both football and baseball. Wolf said the Browns and other teams that embrace analytics are “out of control.”
“When something goes wrong, who takes responsibility?” Wolf said. “Their answer: ‘Well, that’s what the data told us.’ What a crock. That’s what got ’em 1-31.”
Ron Wolf certainly has an old-school approach to the game, and it served him well during his tenure in the NFL, which spanned most of the second half of the 20th Century. But in the 21st Century, analytics are an increasingly important part of the NFL. The Browns’ failures don’t negate that.
Pay real close attention to the bolded quote, it’s important as fuck.

He ripped the Packers as well when they didn’t promote Eliot.

January 30, 2020 at 5:52 am #18174Dawg E. DawgParticipantOh, I don’t believe it will work. I’ve stated multiple times, I believe whoever they pick will fail because they will either be a terrible choice, or they will be undermined by Haslam, or they won’t be given enough time in their position to see it through.
Make no mistake, I have no faith in the Browns organization what so ever. I just don’t place the blame at the feet of analytics. I place it at the feet of Haslam.

I should’ve known better.
I take it back, you’re fucking crazy.
Understand something. Understand something that is an indisputable fact: There will never be an NFL team in England. It doesn’t work. It can’t work. It’s a logistical nightmare that cannot be overcome. It’s an 11 hour flight from Los Angeles to London. Are you really gonna force a west coast team to fly 11 hours during the season, play, then fly back? These one-off games they have are one thing but doing it for an entire season is unthinkable. Would you have them only play East coast teams? What about the London team, you’re gonna have them fly from London to the U.S. 8 times in 17 weeks? That’s absolutely insane.
And then there’s the players. You have to convince a coaching staff and an entire roster to live in England. Why is it so easily assumed that an entire team of players would have no problem moving to another country on the other side of the World? Going to England, and playing a game in England, is completely different than LIVING in England.
It sounds “neat” or “cool” to talk about it over a beer, or even watch a game being played in Wembley or some shit, but when you start to look at it seriously or realistically it doesn’t take very long to see that it can’t work.
How are you paying them? Pounds or Dollars? What the tax structure look like?
This isn’t going to Canada dude.
It’l never happen. Write that down and read it everyday until it seeps into your brain.
January 30, 2020 at 11:49 am #18182soupParticipantThe NFL thought LA could host a team….multiple times. Same with Oakland. It’ll never happen but they keep doing it anyway.

That’s a completely different argument though. That’s about market. Those cities are still in the United States.
I’ll state this again…….it’s impossible to do. It doesn’t matter if the NFL and an owner with a team primed to move WANTED to do it, they still couldn’t. Because it CAN’T work.
January 30, 2020 at 4:14 pm #18187MDP Sack AttackParticipantI have friends who work for gin and rum brands who hop back and forth between Europe and the US multiple times a month. It’s not unheard of. And they don’t have chartered flights.
January 30, 2020 at 4:46 pm #18190ShooterModeratorA couple dudes selling gin isn’t at all the same as traveling an entire football team across the pond.
January 30, 2020 at 5:43 pm #18192MDP Sack AttackParticipantIf you compare small distillery financially to the NFL, their flying one dude 20 times a year is definitely equivocal to the NFL chartering a team a plane 10 times.
February 1, 2020 at 11:24 am #18202ShooterModeratorIt’s not a cost/financial issue though.
