ParticipantOk, I’m seeing a recurring theme throughout this site, as well as many others. And I’m not gonna go digging up numbers and comparing this player to that…I am, however, going to point out two huge reasons why this team is doing so shitty this season.
1) The running game. What running game? When was the last time any back we have sniffed 100 yards? Bad line play coupled with bad play calling has made us a one dimensional team. I don’t give a fuck who’s under center, if you can’t run the ball, and the opposition knows it, then why in the hell is it the quarterback’s fault when the game is lost?
2) The defense. When your star player has been injured for the majority of the season (including preseason), when he has played, he’s out of sync and getting beat just like every DB on the team, when there’s very little pass rush, when your front four are getting no push, when the turnovers that you are getting are almost always a gimmie, and we are nearly last IN THE LEAGUE IN EVERY RECORDABLE STATISTIC…how again does this shit fall on the quarterback?
I really fail to see what the argument is when it comes to quarterback play, who’s back there, etc…and now folks are talking about selecting just that with the #1 overall (which, while likely, we haven’t locked down yet). Quarterback play hasn’t, for once, been why this team has sucked. Nor, shockingly, has the WR play (yeah, they were bashed here, too) been bad.
Seriously, if both the running game and defense were even middle of the road, then so to, I imagine, would be our record.
And yes, feel free to place blame on those usual places. But to me, the combination of the numbers and the shit show I watch every week doesn’t lie.
The running game and the defense. Their failures are the main reason we suck. That, and a strong argument could be made for coaching as well. Might even be able to weave that in somewhere.

ParticipantEvery single year we dump more and more of our money and attention to our line and running backs, and inevitably our coaches give up on the run game after the first half of the first game. Mind boggling.

KeymasterBoth the offensive and defensive lines are trash. No other way to say it. Those are the weakest performing areas of our team. Watch a New England game, or a Pittsburgh game. Watch how their RB’s aren’t even TOUCHED until they are 2 yards upfield. Watch their QB’s stand still in the pocket and count 3 seconds before they are forced to move. Compare that to our team. The very moment our RB is handed the ball there’s a defender there to knock him over. Our QB’s sometimes don’t even get one second before they’re running for their lives. It’s the reason our QB’s are getting injured so often, we don’t protect them. Conversely we have the same issue with our defensive line. Zero pressure generated by D-linemen. Opposing QB’s have all day to throw. Opposing RB’s never get tackled by D-linemen, it’s usually by a linebacker or safety. Until we start getting good line play we’re not going to play good football. We’ve had 3 QB’s start games this year, and two of them have put up games with over 370 yards that we’ve still lost. QB is not the problem.

Its like our left side of the offense line is a secret weapon….one that we never use.

ParticipantI know…it was the 49ers, a QB that hasn’t played much…I get it. That fact isn’t lost on me in regards to what follows…
The two very things I was bitching about being wrong with this group came together and totally dominated the game. This is to take nothing away from those that were already making contributions (QB, WR), as they all came to play as well.
Fuck the first draft pick. I could care less what number we end up with. As long as this team can come together like this every game. Jobs will be saved. But that, my friends, is an ‘if’. I would LOVE for this staff to stick around if this team can play like this every game. It’ll be really nice for this team to be competitive. No more losing games by 34 damn points.
Mike Pettine said something yesterday (I’m not gonna dig out the article) that really defines us as fans…when you win, there’s overreaction, and when you lose, there’s overreaction. I certainly don’t think wanting to see my team play like this qualifies as that…but I can sure as hell see where he’s coming from.
I know this much- if these guys show these next few weeks that they can play up to these standards (even in a loss), then I’m all for keeping him on as coach…if only to show some continuity.

ParticipantI agree – the last thing on my mind in the middle of a season should be the draft. Always, win games – never try to tank games. People pay their hard earn money and spend their Sundays watching your team. You should always give them the best performance.
This has not been going on now for 6 weeks. Glad to see these guys play well yesterday.

We’re saving them for our playoff run. Won’t the other teams be surprised!
This may have been the exception that proves the rule. Seeing both offensive and defensive lines play that way just shows what we’ve been missing all year. Is it on the coaches? Is it on the players? I didn’t see a different scheme, I just saw proper execution. This makes me think its less on the coaches than on the players (the opposite of what I thought last week).

ModeratorAll I know is that honestly, more than anything, it just really pissed me off.
I was just sitting there going “oh noooooooooow you all do your jobs. Noooooooooooow you decide to actually play”. We could’ve, and more importantly SHOULD’VE, been doing that the entire season. Is it always going to have the same results? Of course not, but this was maybe the 3rd or 4th game of the year where I actually saw this kind of effort and holy hell, looky looky at what happens.
I honestly have no goddamn clue what these idiots have been doing all year, because if they’d just given that effort all season, we’d probably be sitting at .500 or better an still with much to play for.
The anger comes from the fact that it’s not that they couldn’t do it, it’s just that for some reason they didn’t, and that shit is infuriating.
Awesome job team. Fuck you all for not doing it until now, dicks.
