soupParticipantFreddie Kitchens just got another promotion.
The Cleveland Browns are hiring Kitchens to be their head coach, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. Kitchens became the interim offensive coordinator after Todd Haley was fired midseason.

MDP Sack AttackParticipantWasn’t my first choice, but I’m good with it. His offense was more instrumental in our success than Williams, so this was likely then only way to keep him for more than a year. I’m just worried we’re taking him away from what he’s good at.
His coordinators will be extremely important.

IceKeymasterI’m shocked. He must’ve done better behind the scenes than he did on the field. I was fully expecting Dorsey to pull from his huge rolodex of coaches from his past.

the dudeParticipantI think this was a great decision. I think Gregg Williams would have been a great decision too. But i think this is someone who is going to make a big change to this organization and help the team grow.
Hue Jackson is a loser.

ParticipantI want to see how kitchens hires the rest of his staff. Wondering who stays and who goes. I think he will continue to call his own plays but not sure if he hires someone to assist in developing gameplans etc. Someone that he can work with and be on same page.
Who will be the DC?January 9, 2019 at 2:55 pm #15117

soupParticipantMore good news. MKC reported Kitchens will report directly to Dorsey which is a departure from the past when the HC reported to Haslam

Seems like a pretty through house cleaning.January 9, 2019 at 10:07 pm #15125
DawgSoldierParticipantLove Kitchens as a OC. I am scared to death of a Rookie HC and Rookie QB combo. I think they should kept Williams and the whole staff as is.
This hire is all about going after the exception rather than the rule IMO. And I hate going after outliers/exceptions as they tend to be hard to find.
Promoting within in the NFL hasn’t worked in a decade of tries.
I hope I am wrong about Kitchens as HC as I was about Baker as QB.
I also hated that he cleaned house of all the coaches. IMO keeping as much continuity as possible would have been a smart move IMO.

You mean coaches let go by Dorsey. Kitchens hasn’t even been introduced as HC yet, he’s had nothing to do with these moves as they have been organizational. Some of them were gone before he was even interviewed.

Good thing Baker isn’t a rookie anymore. (They only make you play your rookie year once).

Give some examples. I don’t think there is much merit to that statement.

DawgSoldierParticipantOkay ay got me shooter. A young Qb coming of his rookie year and a rookie HC. :p Feel Better.
As far as Dorsey cleaning house and not Kitchens. If kitchens still wanted them there IMO they still would be there. Or why hire him as HC if he can’t pick/keep his own staff?
As for the list of rookie HC that failed as hires from within. Here are the last 10 hires from with before Kitchens was promoted to HC.
Ben McAdoo NYG 2yrs as HC
Dirk Koetter TB 3yrs as HC
Jim Tomsula 49ers 1 year as HC
Hue Jackson OAK 1 year as HC
Mike Munchak TEN 3 yrs as HC
Jim Caldwell DET 3 yrs as HC
Raheem Morris 3TB yrs as HC
Bill Callahan OAK 2 yrs as HC
Dave Campo DAL 3 yrs as HCLook if Dorsey has found another exception to a rule, fine. But Kitchens becoming a good HC would buck a significant trend that says otherwise.
I’ve said before and I’ll say again. I really like Kitchens as guy and an OC. All of which tells me zero about what kind of HC he will be or what qualifications he has.
Being you are still plugged in to sports media in Cleveland. If you have any info on why they chose him and for what reasons. That would be really cool. And the same could be said for as why they let Gregg Williams go as well.
BTW The list I got off the Colin Cowherd show. The guys an ass but he does so from a half way reasonable point of view.

I know, I just didn’t want plagiarise someone’s work/research as mine.
But I think the point is valid though no matter who it came from.

IceKeymasterGood thing Baker isn’t a rookie anymore. (They only make you play your rookie year once).
I’d argue that Baker skipped over his rookie year and his second year. He played like a third year QB.
January 10, 2019 at 8:42 am #15137
DawgSoldierParticipantGregg Williams had prior Head Coaching experiance than just his stint with the Browns. That list is guys that were promoted from within as 1st time head coaches.
If Greg Williams had been retained Cleveland would have been his 2nd stint as a full time NFL Head Coach.
