JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT COULDN’T GET WORSE
DATELINE BEREA: On the heels of Browns owner Jimmy Haslam firing Head Coach Mike Pettine and General Manager Ray Farmer, Jimmy drops a big A-bomb by announcing that Sashi Brown has been promoted to the position of Executive Vice President of Football Operations AND that Brown will have the FINAL SAY ON THE 53 MAN ROSTER and MAKE DRAFT PICKS. To be painfully honest, my first response was, “who the f@#% is Sashi Brown?!” Then I discovered that his area of “expertise” is in corporate law and salary cap related matters. So let me get this straight . . . we’ve got a combination bean counter and business lawyer making football decisions – which is something that he has absolutely ZERO EXPERIENCE DOING.
But wait, it gets worse . . . The GM to be hired will – according to Haslam – report directly to Sashi Brown, but the Head Coach to be hired will – according to Haslam – report directly to Jimmy Haslam. Not only that, but the potential Head Coach hire will likely be required to have certain members of the current coaching staff on his staff. That’s going to drastically reduce the number of qualified candidates to fill the position.
So what we now have in the inner circle of football operations decision making are the following people . . .
Jimmy Haslam – Owner
Dee Haslam – Owner’s wife
Alec Scheiner – Team President
Sashi Brown – VP of Football Operations
Head Coach to be named later
General Manager to be named later
Jimmy comes off as an eccentric owner that cares only about making money who has this delusional vision of all these people working together in complete harmony singing folk songs from the 1960’s while eating s’mores and drinking Kool-Aid around the campfire.
So what are you saying, Wunkle. Let me put it in as simple terms as I can . . . The Cleveland Browns will continue being the embarrassment of the entire NFL for a minimum of the next five seasons. Folks, I didn’t think it was possible; but the owner of your beloved Cleveland Browns has just succeeded in making this organization an even bigger cluster-f@#% than any of us could’ve possibly imagined.
Where is the strong leadership in this organization? Where is the one who’s going to change the culture of losing in the locker room? Who is going to hold the players on the roster accountable for their actions?
And then there’s the roster. Alex Mack will likely opt out of his contract and Joe Thomas is contemplating doing the same because he’s sick of the losing and sick of re-booting after a couple seasons. The Johnny Manziel circus is packing up the trucks and is about to leave town and Joe Haden’s career could be in jeopardy due to concussion issues. Somebody just put a bullet through my head and put me out of my misery because we as Browns fans deserve far better than what this organization has done since 1999 and is about to do for years to come. Bend over, Browns fans, here it comes again.
Am I going mad, or did the word THINK escape your lips? You were not hired for your brains, you hippopotamic landmass!

I mean, I did. I truly honestly did.
Wow was I wrong.
January 3, 2016 at 10:50 pm #3528DawgSoldierParticipantDee Haslam is part Owner. That was done for legal reasons so that dynamic was already in place.
Brown and Schriner are on the same level from what I read.
A GM and HC reporting to someone directly under the Owner isn’t a new thing in the NFL.
Personally I am reserving comment till I see who they get and how it is finally organized.

I just want to follow up with this thought process. Obviously, Haslem owns this team and he should always be the decision maker. However, he should never have to make decision in day to day operations. This is why you hire personal and appropriate people to run you business.
Jimmy said on air yesterday that this has been a real tough learning curve for him and his people. I imagine his people are the investors in the organization. They are also dictating what is going on here too guys.
So here is a thought that I just want everyone to think about. We never heard of this guy Sashi until yesterday right? So what if Sashi is one of the investors from the investment group that helped Haslem buy the team. Maybe this investment group thinks he is doing pretty shitty and they have an out or some sort of details in their contract that doesn’t give Haslem full control? For all we know, he is just the puppet who is guaranteed money if he turns the organization profitable if they aren’t already.
The thing is, I think this is just a big show. It is the same old one trick pony the browns pull every few years – change out management, change out responsibility, and try to get fans excited – this time though I really think just by the response on this forum and the OBR that fans think this is a garbage move and they will just distance themselves more and more.
College football viewings were down this year. I have to believe the NFL is also down with the lack of exciting QB’s and all the injuries. I know in my house, I have watched about half of NFL that I used to watch. I rarely watched NFL thursday after week 4. I almost never watched the 4pm game unless it was the browns.
Hue Jackson is a loser.
January 4, 2016 at 9:29 am #3544IceKeymasterI knew it could get worse. At no point did I ever think it couldn’t get worse. The Browns have an amazing ability to devise creative ways to be worse.
January 4, 2016 at 9:55 am #3551MavParticipantI recall catching repeated verbal beat downs for being pissed when Haslam was given the team.

It happens…..then people bite their tongues….
I was hoping he would bring in some new leadership and start a new tradition. But it looks like the same old team.
Are we worst than Shurmur / Holmgran era? IDK.

Jimmy Haslam and Dee Haslam do not combine for 100% ownership of the Browns. She has zero to do with the dynamic. If it were a full owner decision than all shareholders would have a say. Try again kid.

Personally I am reserving comment till I see who they get and how it is finally organized.Who’s Schriner? Never heard of him, neither has the organization. Reserve all the judgment you want. This move is idiotic. No GM will come here and say “I know what I’m doing, I just don’t want any say in the 53 man roster or NFL draft.”
I’m betting Sashi was given control because he won their fantasy football league.
I’m one step away from being done with the NFL completely as clearly Jimmy The Hick is purposefully doing this to lose and get himself to be the first team in England.
Freedom!!!
January 4, 2016 at 12:36 pm #3559DawgSoldierParticipantit’s like this soup. we can bitch about things which won’t help or wait till they finish then be critical of the final product.
Personally I am hopeful (dunno why) that they catch lightning in a bottle this time and waiting to see what they do.

January 5, 2016 at 7:54 am #3615BillWunkleParticipantI can imagine the comments coming from Dee Haslam’s pie hole when the inner circle is reviewing film of potential draft picks and free agents. The commentary would be riveting.

January 5, 2016 at 8:30 am #3617IceKeymasterI used to dream of being a fly on the wall in Berea just to see how the team runs. Now I think actually seeing it would be like the disappointment of waking up from a great dream and realizing it wasn’t real.
