We’ve heard the rumors about our ‘future’ QB coach and his involvement with Mariotta. We’ve also heard the rumor about us trying to move up to get him.
So, if these are the only two options for our team to develop as our franchise QB, who do you want?
(What I mean is that the team will NOT draft another QB to be their franchise QB for the next 5 years and we would only have one of them)and yes, the draft picks that would be needed to get Mariotta factor into this discussion along with every other factors.
Do you want Manziel because he still has potential and would cost us zero draft picks?
OR
Do you want Mariotta because he has better ‘character’?
State your case…
Which QB would you prefer?
- Manziel, costs zero draft picks (100%, 5 Votes)
- Mariota, probably costs both our 1sts this year and maybe a 1st or 2nd next year (0%, 0 Votes)
Total Voters: 5

It only takes a few starts to see that he’s dumpster material. Mariota has never worked in anything but a high school 1 read system. He may end up being a good QB but it will take him a few years to get there, and by then we’ll have run out of patience and pulled the plug. Also the cost is just WAY too high for a guy with that many unknowns.
My option C is sign a solid vet QB (Hoyer and McCown are the best available), draft a QB in the 2nd-3rd round, and let all 4 QB’s fight for their spot in the preseason. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if both a 2nd round rookie and Connor Shaw beat out Manziel if the contest is fair.

Freedom!!!
February 13, 2015 at 9:31 pm #719durakbaneParticipantUmmm..that wasn’t the point…neither of you followed the rules of this post. The easy answer is none of the above, now pick from the two options.
February 14, 2015 at 2:01 am #722soupParticipantSince you put the hammer down, Mariotta. Manziel doesn’t possess a single NFL skill.

For the record, Manziel was Soup’s pick.
Please feel free to take this out of context, quote it later, etc.
February 15, 2015 at 8:34 am #724IceKeymasterOk, if you’re forcing me to choose then it really depends on the terms.
If you’re just asking which QB I’d rather have on my roster today all else equal, then clearly it’s Mariota.
But we’re going to have to give up a lot to get him. Which QB I’d prefer completely depends on what we’d have to give up. IMO Mariota won’t be a top 5 pick, likely not even top 10. Based on that, if we draft him with our 12th overall pick then I’d be happy with the situation. If we move up though and give up an RG3-type haul to do it then I won’t be very happy, because I just don’t think he’s worth that investment. As much as I can’t accurately predict how someone will do as a doctoral student just based on their work in elementary school, I don’t think it’s possible for anyone to accurately predict how Mariota will perform in a pro system based on how he performed in his single-read option offense his whole life.February 17, 2015 at 10:05 am #728MDP Sack AttackParticipantAs much as I hate voting for anything Johnny, I voted for him simply because of the draft picks involved in the other scenario. Starting Manziel while drafting two talented (non QB) players in the first round will have us in good shape to compete in 2016 with a new QB. Starting Mariotta (whom I see as Sam Bradford with better legs and slightly less arm) would make us better in 2015, but missing two years of first round picks would further expose our lack of depth and set us back for the next few years.
February 17, 2015 at 2:37 pm #730the dudeParticipantI don’t see any first rounds qbs this year who I can say will take us to the super bowl. If we can pick up more first rounders for the next year, i say do it.
Hue Jackson is a loser.
February 17, 2015 at 6:06 pm #735IceKeymasterExactly right. If it was a choice between Manziel and a prospect like Andrew Luck then I’d say hell yes, give up those picks and get that guy here. 3 first round picks for Luck would have been worth it. 3 first rounders for any QB in this draft is a waste.

I said a prospect like Andrew Luck, not RG3. If I’m gonna spend 3 firsts and a second on a player, it’s gonna be the top player in the draft not the second best.
