I’ve been thinking of the similarities of our moves to Moneyball since Sashi was given control. He’s exactly the spreadsheet by-the-numbers guy that the A’s had. The only difference is that money isn’t an issue; we’re not trying to win with cheap players we’re just trying to win.
Now there are rumors that we’ve actually hired Paul DePodesta, the actual Moneyball nerd the A’s used.
Get ready for a crazy season. If the HC doesn’t start the guys that Sashi and DePodesta want, they’ll just trade the guy that he’s starting instead. @Soup the stats will tell more this season than they ever have.
That was my original thought too oddly enough Ice.
The thing is though, it doesn’t really work in football or any other sport besides baseball.
Baseball you have equal amount of opportunity no matter what. This is why nitpicking players who over compensate on one spot but lack in another spot works.
You can’t sign 3 elite players on the offensive line and put them on that side and have the 2 worst on the left side an expect to be successful. Everyone knows then where the ball is going right?
In baseball, you can have a guy who is terrible on the right side of the field but a solid hitter if you are facing right handed hitters all day.
Now don’t get me wrong, if you want to try to low ball veterans in certain positions, I think that is fine. But baseball and football attitudes are completely different.

Listen to the job description: Answerable only to team owner Jimmy Haslam, DePodesta will sit above Sashi Brown, the newly anointed executive vice president of football operations. Per a release from the Browns, DePodesta will be tasked with “assessing and implementing best practices and strategies that will provide the organization with the comprehensive resources needed to make optimal decisions.”

One of the reasons moneyball was used by the A’s is they didn’t have the same amount of money to spend as the bigger teams Yankees Dodgers Red Sox ect….
The Browns don’t have that issue with the NFL salary cap and are in the top 5 in cap space last time I looked.
So I am thinking moneyball applied in the NFL will look nothing like how it was applied in baseball just based on the given circumstances alone.

He’s likely just being hired as an executive who has experience with loser organizations who turned things around. His experience with the A’s was his only time on a small-budget team in his entire 20 year career, and he did terribly with the Dodgers and Padres.
“Moneyball” is also a sensationalized account of a shift from drafting based on athleticism to drafting based on production, which was a change already being widely adapted throughout the league at the time.
Analytics as used in baseball is useless in the NFL, due to the difference between a team based offense versus the individual based one seen in baseball. Analytics in baseball fall flat on their faces evaluating defense, which is the only team based aspect of the game.
In short, we’ve hired an executive. I highly doubt his name comes up any more often regarding football matters than Scheiner’s.
Although, if Duke Johnson leads the NFL in OBP, I’ll eat my words.
