I remember when there were a lot of folks that were riding my ass because I embraced the “Moneyball” analytics approach. While there is still a LONG way to go (the draft picks have to work out), tell me that you aren’t impressed by what this organization has done in the last 24 hours.

In all seriousness, what you saw today was what I tried to convey when Sashi and Paul were put in charge. Analytics has improved operational efficiency in so many industries already, and its still in its infancy. Mathematics is the language of the future, and watching it applied in the manner it was today was poetry.

The Browns are heading in an amazing new direction. People may one day talk of DePodesta and Brown the way generations have talked about the West Coast Offense and Paul Brown. Sometimes the pioneers aren’t the ones who get the glory (at least immediately). The key to analytics is sample size and ensuring you don’t mistake correlation for causation. That can take time. But based on the early returns, the Harvard connection is firing on all cylinders and Cleveland’s front office is being noticed for something other than its mishandling of situations.

So far, the offense is being built inside out. Any investments at QB will be well protected. Our current assets at RB just got more valuable. On paper, this is one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and we are built to control the line of scrimmage.

It’s not just what you get, it’s what you paid to get it. I’m interested to see what (if anything) the Browns do with the QB position before the draft. The Patriots want an insane amount of compensation for Garopolo at present, and depending on how the draft goes, the value of the #12 pick hinges directly on how many QBs have gone off the board by the time we have to make a decision.

The Browns bought themselves options today. Trade Osweiler and get more draft capital. Roll with Osweiler into the season as the #1 QB and take advantage of the depth at DB in the draft. If there’s an early run on QBs, the pick may be more valuable to the Patriots if we want to try to acquire Garopolo. If there’s not an early run on QBs, we may take “our guy” if he’s still on the board at #12. We have options, and we took a lot of leverage away from Bill Belichick and the Patriots today.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, QBs, even QBs who sign big deals, tend to struggle their first year in a new offense. Despite similar talent levels on the Broncos and Texans, Osweiler was the difference. Why? Bill O’Brien is known for having a complicated offense. Osweiler has had on the field judgement issues since he was in college. However, in a run heavy play action system like Hue’s (which is QB friendly) I think Osweiler could flourish, just as Joe Flacco did.

All in all, as others have already pointed out, it was a great day to be a Browns fan. I, for one, happen to believe it is just the first of many good days.

It’s a good thing you were born in this era DS…talk like that in the 1400s would have gotten you burned at the stake.

But I concur, the shit that the nerds are doing are extremely impressive thus far. That Osweiler trade was something never before seen in this league, and like you mentioned, this isn’t the end.

Yeah, we still have a ton of work to do, but (hopefully) fixing all the leaks on the O-line in one day is…unheard of. At the very least, they’ve made the offseason exciting.

I think their quantitative analysis came up with a few amazing (common sense) conclusions:

    1) It is necessary to build through the draft, but even the best scouts miss as often as they hit. The best way to draft better is to increase the amount of picks you have. Now we are flush with picks.

    2) Don’t throw bad money after good. Cut the question marks immediately, don’t resign them.

    3) Identify the building blocks of your team that are young and DO throw money at them.

The Calculator Club was gonna go 1 of 2 ways: It was either going to be good, or a spectacular failure.

Judging by the way yesterday went, the arrow seems to be firmly pointed towards the former. The Osweiler move was a savvy one. You basically had a baseball guy making a basketball move in a football league. If these guys can carry this momentum over into the next few days, and ultimately in the draft, I firmly believe that the Browns will have themselves quite a turnaround in 2017.

For the 1st time in quite a while, there is reason for both optimism and excitement in Berea.
