ParticipantI’ll get right to the question everybody is wondering: who starts at QB moving forward? I’ve been on record saying Kizer should be given the whole year, regardless. I no longer think that. If Kizer was average, or slightly below, I’d insist we stick with him. But he’s been dreadful.
Yes, his WRs haven’t helped him, but Hogan showed better yesterday with no 11st team reps and the same WRs. I really don’t want to here about the WRs holding him back, when he’s been as bad as he’s been.
I honestly think the best thing for the team and for Kizer is to sit for awhile, and watch Hogan play. Do I think Hogan is the long term answer? No, but I’d give it a quarter of a percent of a chance. But it’s clear the Kizer is regressing from game to game, so sitting for several games may be the best way for him to take a breather and eventually move forward. Thoughts?

ParticipantQuestion I have, why can’t Hogan be the guy? I keep hearing he isn’t but no one elaborates on why. He moves the offense when he’s in. He’s accurate. Typically makes the right read and throws guys open. So why not?

ParticipantThat’s really a good question. I think for me, when he came in last year he played before he even knew 3 pages of the playbook, so they’d throw him in and have him run a few QB keepers and he’d come back out, so that kind of tainted my opinion of him based on my first impression.
From the limited amount he’s played though, I just get a backup qb feel from him. But, he is also young, and it’s probably not fair to label him a backup so quickly.

ParticipantY’know, this is all a big fucking mess. And not just at the QB position.
Before yesterday, I wouldn’t have agreed about Hogan. I’d have wanted the suck to continue while Kizer “grew”. But let’s face it…whatever magic he possessed in the preseason disappeared by game 1. Hogan isn’t perfect, but he’s our only hope to win a game. After 2 seasons of this shit, I’ll be ecstatic for double the win total of last season. If Kizer is going to “grow” this season, let him do it from the bench.
I get that Hue has had success as an OC in the past, and maybe if he had more experienced players here to play in this system, we may have a win or two to show for it. But after losing 20 fucking games, something’s gotta change. I mean some of that is on Kizer (so many missed reads), but as a coach, it’s on him to recognize that. If the shit isn’t working, fix it. For a guy that claims he has to look at video to see what needs fixed, he’s doing a poor job of fixing anything.
Now, on the defensive side, things aren’t nearly as bad, but still a bit too rough. Considering that we have the lowest-costing defensive roster in the league (surprising after the Collins contract), it could definitely be worse. That said, there have been several long drives that should have never happened due to stubborn playcalling. Granted, Collins, Shelton, and Garrett have been sidelined, not to mention that Peppers is playing a position he isn’t suited for, but we need to improve here as well. But…Williams gets more of a pass here than Hue…9 games in and he isn’t terrible. Not like the offense.
It’s also clear that so far, the front office has been ineffective in recognizing talent. Wentz might not be the greatest ever, but he’s been very consistent. Houston seems to be making us look like fools with the Watson pick. Stop doing shit on the cheap and spend some money on fucking talent. We need to shore this up or this 5 year rebuild isn’t gonna make it out of this season.
But say we pull a Soup and fire everyone. Then what? Who the fuck would want to inherit this mess?
Our only hope is to start winning…and it’s not looking likely from where I sit.

It’s not like Hues been shy about handcapping every qb not named Kizer.
As far as winning now is concerned, I’m not the least bit interested in making moves to win now. Every move the FO has made since they’ve gotten here as been about the long term, so there’s no reason to change that now. That said, I still think going with Hogan is the right move.

ParticipantSoup, I just want to win.
I have watched a lot of football and Hogan throws the ball 10x worst than Tebow and after 4 games he will crumble and be the most pathetic qb we have ever seen. But he wins 1 game, then so be it.
Hogan is a real smart dude.
Kizer is a smart guy too.
Receives have been terrible. Timing has been terrible. We can say Kizer is bad…but have you been watching the routes these guys have been running.
Hogan’s lack of athletic ability but intelligence has been putting the ball where only 1 person can make a catch, and it has to be a spectacular catch at that.
I personally want Kizer to start the season. Whether he has ups and downs, I want him to learn and play. Year two with a couple of receivers in free agency and one in the draft should make this click a little better. Plus off season naming him the starting qb and getting him practice – because that is what he needs – more practice. Has size, strong arm, but cannot connect with receivers.
Guys, timing is just awful. The difference between the browns and the pats is timing. Brady throws the ball where his receiver will be. He tells them to be there. The Browns don’t have that….not at all
Hue Jackson is a loser.

ParticipantDude, Tebow only completed more than 60% of his passes in a game ONCE, and he had much better receivers than the browns have. Hogan doesn’t have the prettiest delivery, but he’s nowhere near as bad as Tebow.

But he wins 1 game, then so be it.He’s 26 for 38 with 3TDs and 2 ints on the year. 68% completion. Where are you getting “he will crumble” from? You can’t base anything on last year as he was thrust in due to injuries while coming to the team late.
Hogan is a real smart dude.
Kizer is a smart guy too.Agree
Receives have been terrible. Timing has been terrible. We can say Kizer is bad…but have you been watching the routes these guys have been running.
The same routes they are running for Hogan. It’s the same players. One guy is at 50% and one guy is at 68%. If you have the same plays and the same players and the difference is that drastic – it’s not the recievers. It’s the QB.
Hogan’s lack of athletic ability but intelligence has been putting the ball where only 1 person can make a catch, and it has to be a spectacular catch at that.
Lack of athletic ability? The QB that had 100 yards rushing in a game last year isn’t athletic?
I personally want Kizer to start the season.
So did I. Week 1 I got trashed for pointing out the stuff he needed to fix. Rather than fix any of it – he regressed. He’s the exact same player in the NFL he was in college. 2 WOW throws a game only Aaron Rodgers and Brady can make, followed by 35 pieces of shit.
The key word there is “learn” which he hasn’t done. Again, you are blaming WR when Hogan’s numbers are drastically different. Your statemnt also implies that all Hogans pases are off target and the Wr have to make amazing catches. Now use logic – if that’s true why are they catching Hogan’s passes and not Kizers? Again – same WR.
Guys, timing is just awful. The difference between the browns and the pats is timing. Brady throws the ball where his receiver will be. He tells them to be there. The Browns don’t have that….not at all
Hogan looks to have it right now. Kizer didn’t have it in college and doesn’t have it in the NFL and logic dictates he’ll never have it.
Remember – Kizer was benched in college for a reason. He’s not NFL quality.

ParticipantThis “Kevin Hogan isn’t athletic” BS is just racism, pure and simple. Nobody will say it’s racism when it’s a white guy, but that’s what it is. In the nfl he’s rushed for 10.8 YPA, and in college it was 4.0. Kizers? 4.8 and 3.8. Please explain how Kizer is “more athletic.” Is just lazy racism saying the black QB is more athletic than the white QB.
In fact, the commentators damn near said it on Sunday. After Hogan ran for a nice gain, one of them said something to the effect of “Hogan pulls it down and runs for a nice gain. Suprising to see that out of Hogna as he…(pause)…doesn’t look like a guy that could do that.”
He’s not Mike Vick, but he’s a better runner than anybody gives him credit for.

Kessler hasn’t played this year. He fell into the trap. “Fixed” his arm strength which cost him his accuracy. Ie changed what he did for years and was successful doing and it took away from the best part of his game.

KeymasterWe got a real Holcomb/Couch situation here. As of right now neither are good enough to win in this league. Kizer clearly would have benefited from another year in college. Then a year on the bench behind McCown wouldn’t have hurt either.

Again. Saying Hogan isn’t good enough to win is a bit early. Let him play some full games first. He’s at least putting up points

I think more accurately, we have an RG3/Kirk Cousins situation, in that we have one QB that we’ve invested in, and everybody wants to be the guy but just isn’t performing. We have another young guy, but nobody really wants to give him a shot because there’s no “sizzle” like you have with the high draft pick.
I’m in no way saying Hogan will be as good as Cousins is now, but that’s the situation we’re in.

ParticipantLet me clear something up – when I said athletic, I meant throwing the ball. Soup took it out of context and went all Trump on it.
Hogan had one drive that wasn’t down by two scores and they did nothing after that until the shitty jets and their shitty defense was already in prevent. I am sure the jets were as shocked by this as the rest of us were that Tim Tebow Jr entered the game.
For some reason people here think Duke Johnson is the best thing next to slice bread. He has scored in prevent defenses.
We have 1 solid player who can catch balls and that is Nojuku.
Thanks for beating me on the Kessler comment shooter…. Remember last year how much he was up Kessler butt and his completion %?
Anybody who listens to soups qb arguments needs to talk to me about some ocean front real estate in Cleveland I have.
