Hey guys, I was psyched to find the old Dawgbones crew still BSing about the Browns somewhere on the internet. Glad to be back!

I can’t say I get into the draft like I used to, but I watched the UCLA-USC game because we really need a quarterback. I came away thinking Rosen clearly looked like a better prospect than Darnold… But UCLA’s record got me thinking. I don’t watch enough college football to know much about UCLA’s program since Rosen took over. Just about the only things I know are that 1) Rosen went 18-20 as a starter in 3 seasons; and 2) the same coach, in the immediately preceding 3 seasons, went 29-11 with Brett Hundley.

So I started trying to come up with NFL quarterbacks who played on shitty teams in college. I’m 29, and the best I could come up with was Jay Cutler (11-34 in four seasons at Vanderbilt). A few googles later, the internet gave me John Elway (20-23 at Stanford) and Matt Hasselbeck (9-14 at Boston College). I wasn’t around to see those Stanford teams, but based on what I’ve read about Elway and looking at the records, his college career is probably the closest comp for Rosen’s between the three. Cutler is probably a good comp too – 4 year starter, lots of stats, but a shittier program.

I figured there had to at least be some recent average starters I couldn’t think of, so I went back through the starting QBs from all 32 teams in 2016 and 2017. I may have missed a couple if they only started 1 or 2 games, but here’s the list of the recent NFL starters who had losing records in college:

    1. Jay Cutler (see above)
    2. Brock Osweiler (6-7 at Arizona State)
    3. Drew Stanton (14-21 at Michigan State)

And that’s it. Trevor Siemian went 7-7 at Northwestern (including 5-7 in his full season), and Nick Foles went 19-19 in 3 seasons at Arizona. Kizer’s team sucked his senior year, but he still finished 14-11 as a starter at Notre Dame. Jacoby Brissett went 15-11 at NC State. Joe Flacco and Brian Hoyer both went 16-10. Tannehill went 12-7.

The rest of the starters in the NFL won most of their games in college, including all of the QBs anybody would consider at the top 10 (top half?) in the NFL.

Obviously, none of that means Rosen won’t be great. We do have the John Elway example. But I kind of expected to see more guys on the list at or around .500. Maybe I just didn’t find the information on a bunch between 1982 and 2016, but if the only example is Elway, I’m crossing Rosen off my board….

Anybody have some that I missed in recent history?

Blah blah blah. I didn’t read any of that post, just the name of the author.

    Good to see you, Blump.

Now, off to read that long-ass post.
