6thApril 14, 2016 at 10:41 am #4803DawgstyleParticipantIt amazes me how a team that is consistently as bad as the Browns have been can never get the chips to fall their way in the draft. It seems we are always 1 pick away from landing “our guy”, or we trade the pick away and that guy becomes a game changer (Haloti Ngata, Julio Jones). At least now we have an excuse when the QB we draft flops:
We wanted the other guy.
That said, my guy is Goff. He’s the consumate pocket passer and I hope he’s available when we pick at 2. I’ll root for whoever Cleveland selects, but I really hope that L.A. falls in love with the prospect that dominated the underwear Olympics (Wentz) over the guy who dominated top notch competition on the field (Goff). I understand the concern with the Air Raid, but Goff has done things other Air Raid QBs simply haven’t done (calling his own protection and plays, multiple reads, feeling the pressure in and escaping in smaller pocket, smaller throwing lanes, etc.).
I’ve seen mention of Lynch on the forum as well, and there is a lot to like there if he can develop on the bench (especially since we have RG3 and McCown as a stop gap). Neither has finished a season though, and I have little doubt that a QB drafted this year would be starting by year’s end due to injuries.
The good news however, is that we are still in position to land a very good QB prospect. Whomever you prefer, the analysts are split on who the number one QB in this draft is.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/paxton-lynch?id=2555316In what is being called a deep QB draft, L.A. felt strongly enough about one of those prospects to mortgage their future for one of those guys, despite how closely they are ranked by outsiders. With talks that Cleveland may trade out of the #2 spot, I’ll be interested to see who the Rams pick and what the Browns actually do on draft day. It might be your guy, it might be my guy, or worse, it might be somebody no one was expecting (i.e. the Bills taking E.J. Manuel with the 16th pick in the first round of the 2013 draft).
Whatever happens, things just got a lot more interesting…

It’s a combination of horrible luck and horrible selections. It’s a great recipe for complete disaster, which is exactly what this team is.
When you pass on guys like Roethlisburger and Rodgers, and draft guys like Richardson and Weeden, well, winning 4 games a year is about what you’d expect. When you trade away players like Ngata and Julio Jones, you’re just digging the hole deeper.
April 14, 2016 at 1:38 pm #4807IceKeymasterI hate the Rams. That’s BS. They gave up the entire first half of this year’s draft and most of the first half of next year’s draft to get their guy. It’s just not cool. I mean, I’m glad we didn’t trade up to block them because we’d find a way to really screw it up.
@dawgstyle, I’m the only one on this site banging the drum on Lynch. It would be great if someone else would join me on the LYNCH-TRAIN!!!! Choo choo…. all aboard!
April 14, 2016 at 2:34 pm #4809DawgstyleParticipantLynch is not without his merits. That 7 TD 0 INT half against SMU was one of the most dominating performances I’ve ever seen. That said, Goff was more consistent. Not including bowl games, there wasn’t a single game last season where Goff threw for under 250 yards and at least 2 touchdowns. Not one. Lynch had 3 games where he threw for less than 250 yards and 4 games where he threw for less than 2 touchdowns. Then look at their bowl appearances:
Jared Goff vs Air Force:
467 yards, 67.6% complete, 6 TD, 0 INTPaxton Lynch vs Auburn:
106 yards, 43.2% complete, 0 TD, 1 INTUnder the bright lights of a bowl game, Goff shined while Lynch wilted.
I also share Soup’s belief that Goff has the best ball placement of any of the top 3 picks. Sure, Lynch and Wentz are both bigger and more athletic. Goff is the better pocket passer 9 1/8″ hands down though. Lynch and Wentz showed well when it didn’t matter (combine and pro days). Goff showed well on the biggest stage he’d ever played on.
If the Browns choose to go with a QB at 2, I hope it’s Goff (and I do hope they go QB at 2). If they go another direction, I’d be thrilled if they landed Lynch at the end of the first (though I think we’d have to move up to grab him). If L.A. takes Goff over Wentz, I won’t be crying over spilled milk. I wanted us to suck for Luck. I wanted Bridgewater over Manziel. I even got behind Manziel once he was a Brown. It will be no different if the Browns take Lynch or Wentz over or instead of Goff.

https://youtu.be/hy-3bb1Nqy0April 14, 2016 at 2:38 pm #4810IceKeymasterI question whether the Browns have any interest in a pure pocket passer. Signing RG3 to be a backup/compete for a starting role puts us in a very particular offense, one that requires a QB with a mobile launch point who is a threat to gain yards on his feet. If we trade or cut McCown, I’ll be certain we’re going to use that kind of attack. That more looks like Lynch or Wentz than Goff. If Lynch is their guy, then a trade down would make sense if you believe current draft predictions. I do NOT believe the current draft predictions and believe Lynch is a top 10 pick this year.
Yeah, I’m pretty far out on that limb.
April 14, 2016 at 4:01 pm #4812DawgSoldierParticipantI think DawgStyle will break things if Goff is picked and we draft Wentz. WHile the opposite is probably true with me.
Personally with Goff being from Cal and the rebirth of the Rams in LA. I would be shocked if it wasn’t Goff playing those NFC West dome teams.
@ Ice if Wentz goes 1st overall I wouldn’t mind a trade down to take Lynch….say with Phili

April 14, 2016 at 5:30 pm #4816DawgstyleParticipantViolence is the last refuge of the incompetent. I would do no such thing. If Goff is selected first, it would mean that an NFL franchise agreed with my assessment of his skills with such conviction that they were willing to mortgage their future to secure him. From a scouting perspective, I could be paid no higher compliment.
If the Browns then drafted Wentz or Lynch because Goff was no longer available, of course I would want them to succeed. I have already explicitly stated as much. I bear Luck no ill will for being a Colt, Bortles no ill will for being a Jaguar and Bridgewater no ill will for being a Viking. While I hope he gets his life straightened out, it is my sincerest wish that Manziel never experiences an ounce of success in the NFL. I don’t care about QBs that aren’t Browns, I care about the ones that ARE.
Look, I have lobbied harder than anyone to address the QB position early and often. There are too many variables (injuries, coaching, attitude, etc.) to say with any sort of certainty that any draft prospect will work out. It is only confirmation bias that leads us to believe otherwise. Selecting a franchise QB is a numbers game that skews in your favor if you can properly develop talent as it sits on the bench. Start them right away, and while not impossible, the likelihood of success drops significantly.

April 15, 2016 at 11:39 am #4826ShooterModeratorI have no clue what the idiot DS said, he’s blocked, (Dawgstyle, I reccomend doing the same, it’s wonderful not seeing him at all) but I automatically declare the smart DS the winner of the argument regardless. He’s won all of the other arguments with him.

I think it makes it easier for us now. If the browns are indeed going QB, and there has been debate between Goff or Wentz, the Rams in effect have just made the choice for us since whoever they take, we’re going to take the other guy. Plus they have a built-in excuse if he bombs “well we wanted the other guy”.
I would say that the Browns at this point should do everything they can to find out what L.A. plans to do with the pick. There’s no way the Rams traded all of that if they did not know exactly who they wanted. If they are going to take the QB that the Browns want, then the browns should adjust their strategy.
I’m still of the opinion that the browns aren’t/weren’t going to take a QB at 2. I’m telling all of you, the RG3 signing is not a stopgap/reclamation project, they signed him to be the starter. They’re still going to draft a QB, but it’s either going to be Lynch if he falls, or they’ll take one in the later rounds i.e, Cook, Hackenburg, Cardale etc.

Synopisis:
NFL.com story during silly season thinks it will be Goff to the Ramsbut then they hedge there bets and say it could be Wentz too.

April 16, 2016 at 9:54 am #4835soupParticipantHopefully they take Wentz and we want Goff. If we take Wentz I hope RG3 lights it up with a pro-bowl year 2 years in a row with playoffs and a ring so we can fleece a desparate team for Wentz

Fair enough, though note that your statement:
I think DawgStyle will break things if Goff is picked and we draft Wentz. WHile the opposite is probably true with me.
Is a contrast to the action you are stating I would take, not the scenario that’s occurring. In other words, I would break stuff, you would not (since neither you or I are selecting players for the Browns or Rams). I’m willing to grant you that you probably meant that if the opposite scenario occurred (L.A. selected Wentz and we took Goff), you’d be ready to break shit. That’s how I read it and why I responded as I did (and I’m guessing why everyone else jumped in as well).

Trading back even for an extra 1st in next years draft is still not a sure thing because 1. you might not lose enough games to get the #1 pick 2. the team holding the #1 pick might not want to trade with you because they need a QB, and #3 who says next years QB class will be as good as this years.
April 17, 2016 at 11:04 am #4841ShooterModeratoryou might not lose enough games to get the #1 pick
I think that losing all of them should do it, and that’s a realistic projection with this team lmao.
April 17, 2016 at 12:25 pm #4842IceKeymasterThe Browns will always do just badly enough so that the QB we need in the draft is 1 pick out of our reach.
Personally if the braintrust thinks that whatever QB is left is worth taking a shot at then they have to pull that trigger.
Anyone join me on the Lynch Train?? Anyone???
April 17, 2016 at 4:49 pm #4843DawgstyleParticipantWhile I prefer Goff, I think we have to take a QB at #2, and I think that QB has to be Goff or Wentz. I’m frustrated that it will not be our choice, but I don’t think Lynch makes sense for us given our draft position. Lynch is a top 20 pick and I think he has a huge upside. For me, Lynch is a lot like DE Margus Hunt was a few years back: great prospect, just not for us. I think for Lynch to succeed, he needs to sit behind an established QB (think Tony Romo – Dallas) and develop. I don’t think that is something we can offer a first round pick (McCown and RG3’s injury histories get us to the halfway point of the season at best).
That said, if we decide against Goff/Wentz, score a boat load of picks and grab Lynch around pick #20, I won’t be upset. I just don’t think he’ll be on the board at pick #32 and I don’t see a scenario where we trade out of the top 10 though.

If it makes you feel any better, you definitely get an A for effort. You’re trying so hard lol.
April 17, 2016 at 10:52 pm #4847DawgPoundDudeParticipantI gotta ask…when a player is supposed to sit behind another player, how often does that work? I’m not asking for the sake of argument, but at what point has that tactic really worked? The only thing that comes to mind is Rodgers in Green Bay and…well, there’s all those players that backed up Tom Brady that went absolutely nowhere. I mean I get the whole “learning the playbook” and the game slows down the longer they play…
And, well, I got through reading this article (look at the end of this post) and it got me thinking…maybe it’s less how great a prospect he is, and more to do with things like the coach, the existing team structure, etc…hell if I know. Anyways, read this, and see what you think about the current prospects in comparison to this pretty impressive list.
