Should the Browns attempt to re-sign Hoyer?
- Yes. We'll have to over pay a bit though because he'd rather be somewhere else. (50%, 3 Votes)

My thoughts: Sign him and we’ll probably have to pay a little above market value to do it. I’m in NO WAY saying we should break the bank. Not at all.
I just look at the other potentially obtainable QB’s out there and not one of them excites me. This team needs a veteran presence who is a leader. Hoyer is certainly a team leader and has shown complete willingness to tutor the guy who will replace him. I’d like our depth chart in 2015 to be a vet leader (like Hoyer), Johnny LastChance, and a rookie draft pick.
The immediate problems with Hoyer that come to mind is the complete disaster his season turned into the moment Alex Mack went down. Well Alex Mack will be back. I expect Hoyer to do better than last year if we can put a little more talent around him.
Of course if he asks for the moon, we say thanks but no thanks and move on to Matt Schaub or whoever.
I’d vote no, in fact I wouldn’t bother with any of this weak veteran class any more than I’d spend a draft pick on this medicre QB draft. I’m tired of striving for “better than last year” at QB. We’ve done that almost every year. Better does not equal Good. Hoyer is “better” than Johnny. Hoyer is not good. We aren’t getting anywhere until our QB play is good…the days of winning a Superbowl with Trent Dilfer are long gone.
It’s time to sink or swim with what we have. If by some miracle Johnny turns it arond, awesome. If he looks like he did this past season, we’ll get the #1 pick in the draft and can hopefully settle the QB position with a quality player. But at this point, having average to mediocre QB play get us 8 wins does nothing in the long run.
I rather start manziel and continue to be the embarrassment of the national football league than resign hoyer.
signing hoyer is going backwards. Conner Shaw is a better fit than hoyer.

I don’t like the idea of Manziel, Shaw, and <insert new qb> AND I don’t want to see the same qb’s here either. I think Shaw stays. The issue is that as long as Manziel is here, there will be drama at the #1/#2 spots. If we draft another qb (ugh…every damn year or two)..then Hoyer could be the stop gap. If Manziel stays, …screw it…I can’t seem to come a logical conclusion on this thing.
Keep Shaw as our #3.

Where Hoyer fits or any other qb…hell if I know. If we draft a 1st rd qb, they are our new projected #1. That is about all I know.
While I certainly understand the vitriol towards Hoyer, I have to disagree with MDP and the dude. I think staying put with what we have and sinking or swimming would definitely lead to an epic disaster. The depth chart of Manziel, Shaw, and some rookie would frankly be the worst QB depth chart in NFL history. I’m serious about that, I’m not overstating it. There would be a complete vacuum of leadership and talent at the most important position in team sports. It is the recipe for an 0-16 season that would mean we jettison the entire front office and coaching staff. Yay, it might get us the 1st overall pick but who cares? We’ll be hiring coaches and GM’s who couldn’t get hired anywhere else. It would be throwing away what we built on last season. Yes, last season was actually a positive. We won 7 games, which is more than we’ve won since 2007. Last year was an improvement.
So if we’ve ruled out ‘status quo’, how do we make the QB depth chart better? We have to sign a veteran. There’s no question about it. We need someone to continue to demonstrate a good work ethic and leadership. We need someone who can go into training camp and immediately earn the starter spot. Then we need a highly drafted rookie (1st-2nd round) to push up from the bottom of the depth chart. If you want the best out of Manziel, that’s how you get it. If Manziel with a year head start can’t beat out a rookie in training camp then he needs to be moved immediately off the team. Sell him for a 7th rounder, I don’t care. That’s my recipe for improvement.
Why Hoyer? Why not Schaub or Sanchez? I think re-signing Hoyer is the ONLY way to get anything out of Manziel. Hoyer’s work ethic and attitude is far better than Sanchez’, and unlike Schaub Hoyer has proven that he can win games. I don’t pick Hoyer out of any loyalty to him, I’d pick Hoyer because I think he’s the right choice. Despite my dislike of Manziel I still want him to be successful in a Browns uniform and I think Hoyer is the one that will help him the most.
You resign Hoyer.
As I’ve mentioned many times before, Hoyer was playing great until 1) Mack went down and 2) the meddling from above came and 3) Josh Gordon coming back and throwing a wrench into the wheels. The team was being sabotaged from within with the clamoring for Johnny to start despite not being ready, and Haslam dictating to the offensive staff during games what plays to run and what personnel to use. If we had the Hoyer of the first 8 games last year, I’d be happy as hell with that. While he played poorly the 2nd half, I honestly put very little of that on him as there were myriad factors involved and not one of them were in his favor.
He’s a solid if unspectacular starter.
Couldn’t agree more @Shooter. I’d NEVER just leave the roster with Manziel as our number 1. You have to sign a vet. Really this may be the worst free-agent QB class in a long time and Hoyer is probably right there at the top of this class. You sign him because he’s the best, not just because he’s been here before.
You do what it takes to resign Hoyer. He’s far and away the best FA QB option. IT would give us a semblance of stability at the position. Aside from Mack going down, the insertion of Gordon back in the line up removed Gabriel – who was becoming a true deep threat for Hoyer and it destroyed the passing game. We also went from run first to pass happy. As I’ve stated more than people care to hear – we need to run measurably more than pass.
What’s our biggest weakness every year? QB. So I ask – why is everyone obsessed with passing the ball so often? Eat the clock. Move the needle in your favor.
Hoyer is the guy to resign even if overpaid. We have a ridiculous amount of cap space. Giving him a huge 3 year deal wouldn’t hurt us in any way shape or form.

Sounds like we will be drafting Mariota. I cannot say I am surprised. Ownership is starting to wreak of problems.

Ugh. Mariotta is a good kid, but he worked in a high-school offense the same way Manziel did. I hope we’re not planning to package our entire draft to move up and get him.

The NFL is rigging the Browns to move if we lose a draft pick over texting. They’d have to prove we gained an advantage over the opposition. Last I checked we finished 4th in the division.

You all missed my point. Not a conspiracy theory. It was hyperbole. We lost all December games in a play off run and finished 4th in the division. They have to prove the texts gave us a competent I’ve advantage. What kind of competetive advantage is it to lose out the year and finish 4th? Patriots cheat their way to the Super Bowl. That’s easy to prove an advantage. But finishing 4th? You really have to concoct a fake story to say we had an advantage and dock us a draft pick.
