THOUGHTS ON PRESEASON GAME NO. 1
Now that I’ve had some time to digest what happened last Thursday night, I thought I throw in my two-cents worth on the Browns first preseason performance.
Starting QB Brock Osweiler looked excited to get out onto the field, but rather nervous in the pocket. Had Kenny Britt done a toe tap in the end zone, Osweiler’s stats would’ve been seen in a much different light. My guess is he’ll be the opening day starter.
Cameron Erving has proven only one thing since he was drafted: he’s just another Larry Farmer first round draft bust. The combination of false starts, missed blocking assignments and holding penalties is simply unacceptable at the NFL level. I’d be nervous too if I were in Brock Osweiler’s shoes, knowing that the human turnstile was trying to protect my blind side instead of perennial All-Pro Joe Thomas. The only thing that surprises me about Erving is that he’s still on the roster. I’m confident that, by the time teams finish making roster cuts, Erving will be among the departed and that his replacement will come off the waiver wire.
Rookie DE Myles Garrett is exactly as advertised. The Saints O-line had to double team him on nearly every play. He will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
The addition of Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams and his staff has brought a physicality that this team has been sorely lacking since 1999. It was good to see the defense come up with turnovers, as well as see the offense get points off turnovers. Welcome to Cleveland, Coach Williams.
Rookie RB Matt Dayes looked quite competent running and catching the football. His pass protection was also quite good. For where we got him in the draft, he was an excellent acquisition.
Star of the game DeShone Kizer looked very good for the most part. I must encourage you all to please temper your enthusiasm, though. There were times when he held onto the football far too long. You also need to remember that this was against 3rd and 4th string defensive players. I’m confident that Kizer is the Browns QB of the future, but he’s got a long way to go before he’s ready to take the wheel. He needs to get better command of the huddle and the playbook. I’m guessing that very few of Hue Jackson’s plays are as easy to call and to read as “strong right slot – Z right – spider 2 Y banana – Z over” or “Gun Roger Pro – Pass Ten – Z Steel – Superman“.
I’m not exactly sure what’s gotten in to Briean Boddy-Calhoun, but I hope that he keeps it up. He’s been a very willing an able tackler at the point of attack.
Rookie kicker Zane Gonzalez looks to be a real keeper. I fear that Cody Parkey’s days in Cleveland could very well be numbered.
Those are a few of my thoughts. Let me know yours.
Am I going mad, or did the word THINK escape your lips? You were not hired for your brains, you hippopotamic landmass!

Delete this part of your post before Soup sees it…!
Seriously though, I agree with everything you said. I’d also like to add that Tank Carder (see, I just pulled an Uncle Bill bold-the-guy’s- name there) needs to stay the hell out of the Mike spot- Joe Schobert would be ideal to run there. Danny Shelton has to get a lot more nasty for this defense to succeed. Because of those two guys, we got gashed for big runs. Yes, sometimes big runs happen, and sometimes one line beats the other line, but it should never be due to guys not doing their job. That needs to be cleaned up. However, this was the first preseason game. There’s still plenty of time to get shit figured out.
One guy we didn’t get to see on defense- Jabril Peppers. According to media reports, he’s starting to play with the first-teamers, and playing lights-out. We’ll likely see him come Monday.
Back on offense, I would like to see less mistakes by wide receivers. Kenny Britt looked as if he was playing lazy, and as you said, screwed Brock out of a touchdown. Rannell Hall has gotten praise for a decent camp, and didn’t have a terrible game, but dropped 2 (I think). Jordan Payton showed great concentration on his game-winner. Ricardo Louis has all the tools to be a damn beast. And Corey Coleman may well prove himself worthy of his draft position.
I’d like to see more of the run game, but I have a feeling that during the preseason, due to the unsettled quarterback situation, there’s going to be a lot more passes than runs. Which, since the record doesn’t matter, is probably a good thing. Hopefully we achieve a better balance when we face the Steelers.
I can probably name off a few other things, but I think I typed enough.
Edit: Bill, I do have one question for you…who the hell is Larry Farmer? Did you mean Ray? ?
August 15, 2017 at 2:47 pm #9011soupParticipantIt’s quite simple DPD. Is giving up 47 yards rushing in Q1 an improvement?
People can talk about how physical they seemed, etc. But results matter. The result I saw was abysmal.
Over 4Q that’s 188 yards rushing allowed. Want perspective? Last year at #31 in the NFL we allowed 142.7 rush yards per game.
Let’s see what happens Monday. But 1st appearance looks the usual.

YES Soup, we shouldn’t have allowed it. I agree. But damn, I’ve said it earlier, I’ll say it again, and Im not going to bother the next time it’s brought up: when individual players don’t do what’s expected of them, it leaves the entire defense vulnerable. It is absolutely something that needs to be fixed, and I’m hoping that it DOES get fixed by the next game.
It’s just not something I’m going to view with a bureaucratic eye…this defense is playing with the belief that they are going to be dominant. Spout the numbers off all you like, a winning attitude is just as important.
Apparently, I’m not the only one who sees it.
August 15, 2017 at 7:36 pm #9013mike barnesParticipantOverall I was pleased by the play on both sides of the ball, Erving has got to go worst o- lineman on the roster, Brock needs more time with the ones but will probably start the season till Kizer is ready. Cody looked like what he is a back up. lots of depth on the d-line linebackers looked solid except for Tank Schobert should pass him up on the depth chart. GO Browns.
August 15, 2017 at 8:54 pm #9014ShooterModeratorApparently, I’m not the only one who sees it.
Don’t worry, he’s just the only one that doesn’t.
They’re playing with a different swag to them. You can see it in the body language, the way they move, the aggressiveness, it’s there, there’s no denying that it’s there and that a change has been made.
Will it translate? We’ll see. I’m confident.

2. This year a LB comes up out if position and misses the tackle and the RB breaks a big gain and it’s the LBer fault.
Why is 1 the fault of the coach and 2 the fault of the player?

August 16, 2017 at 10:37 am #9017IceKeymasterThis team looks twice as good as they did 1 year ago. Perhaps 3 times as good.
That translates to 2-3 wins this year. The offense looked VERY sloppy to me no matter who was behind center. Despite all the draft picks thrown at the WR position it looks bad. With certain notable exceptions (rhymes with Shmerving) the line looked improved but not great. I imagine that’ll change when Joe gets in the lineup.
Speaking of Joe Thomas, what’s up with the hair?

August 16, 2017 at 2:35 pm #9020DawgPoundDudeParticipantHey, Soup…I’m going to sum this up.
1) Horton was here last year because he was the fat kid in the dodgeball game. You’ll note that he still is not employed. Hue very likely never wanted him to begin with. I doubt he ever got a phone call when, what, five different teams (a guess) had a new head coach for this season? My guess is there’s a very good reason for that. What are you trying to do, convince me that Horton’s proven track record should have kept him on? I wouldn’t have been exactly shocked if we did, but I can guarantee Williams was hired before Horton’s pink slip ever reached his hand.
2) ONE GAME. And a PRESEASON game at that. Are we to base the ENTIRE FUTURE of GREGG WILLIAMS with the CLEVELAND BROWNS based on the very first time that this team has gotten to face another opponent? They were supposed to have EVERY SINGLE LITTLE THING figured out, right? Is that what you’re saying?
3) I’ve already agreed that this is shit that needs patching up. SO WHY THE HELL DO YOU KEEP QUOTING ME AND ASKING THE SAME QUESTIONS? Are you saying Williams should be fired immediately? Or that we should be inserting Charlie Frye in at MLB? YES Soup, YES. I AGREE. IT NEEDS FIXED. What more do you want from me? Another Shooter-style paragraph about Cadillacs and Chevys or something?
This goes WAY beyond simple pessimism. I’m really beginning to believe you need pills for whatever is wrong (unsure how I missed it before). And if you believe it’s going to be SO terrible, there’s always the sig bet offer I left floating.
Or you can, I dunno, leave it alone and focus on something else. You know, whatever.
EDIT: Not sure if I’m double-posting, but it’s showing in the main forum that I posted something, even though I don’t see my post at all. Weird.
August 16, 2017 at 2:49 pm #9021soupParticipantAgain you failed to answer a very simple question.
Why later year was a terrible player out of position the coaches fault?
Why this year is a terrible player out of position the players fault?
Personally on both it’s the players fault for being in the wrong spot/taking the bad angle. Why is it different for you?
This isn’t Horton/Williams. Yes, to me Williams is a mirage. I said that when hired. He gets a season to prove me wrong. I brought up Horton to you because you bashed Horton and praised the hiring of Williams. Then said 4 guys stuck out. 3 of the 4 Horton didn’t have. The 4th was a raw rookie UDFA taken off another team early in the year. He was our most improved player last year.
You said the defense was improved and I’d be impressed. Game 1 they were typical shit even with upgraded players. Let’s see what happens Monday (though more importantly on the season).
Freedom!!!
August 16, 2017 at 3:41 pm #9023DawgPoundDudeParticipantBecause I never compared anything but their resumes. It’s NOT DIFFERENT FOR ME. I DO believe that Williams is a better, more proven coach than Horton. But you can bet your ass that if this season goes much like last season, I’ll be one of the many voices clamoring for his release.
Let me make myself clear: if this was Game 12 of the regular season, I would find being gashed like that totally, completely unacceptable. In fact, I didn’t like it one bit in a preseason game. It’s something that needs addressed, whether it’s a change of player or an adjustment to fundamentals of the player or players that were beat. Getting gashed is never good, but getting gashed in the preseason is just a tad better than in Game 12…isn’t it? Means you can (hopefully) fix it and not have to worry about the record. This is in no way saying that Williams has earned a damn thing; but neither has he doomed himself to a bad season.
Many individuals sucked under Horton, yes. And he may have gotten a raw deal. But when your defense is in the bottom five in the league in every category…well, you’d think they would have been good at something other than sucking. If an offense is doing whatever they want in every game, that’s a problem. Whoever is injured or not performing, it’s “next man up”. The next man up sucked. And that’s probably not Horton’s fault. And unless he did a stellar job (which he obviously didn’t), he was likely nothing more than a placeholder until someone better came along.
But we’re on two different levels, Soup. At no point last year did this team play with any attitude on defense. Now, at least so far, they do. Sorry if you can’t see that.
One more thing:
Again you failed to answer a very simple question.
Why later year was a terrible player out of position the coaches fault?
Why this year is a terrible player out of position the players fault?</quote>
I had to read and reread this multiple times for it to make sense. That didn’t make this a simple question at all.
NOTE: Anytime I make an edit, my post disappears.
August 16, 2017 at 4:24 pm #9024soupParticipantI absolutely agree now is the time for shitty play to happen. That said, to blame Horton for not fixing grocery baggers is a bit absurd. I k ow there were more, but off the top of my head:
Bryant
Orchard
PoyerAll on IR last year. There were more. But when your safety starting has to be Es Reynolds due to injuries you are in major trouble

August 16, 2017 at 8:49 pm #9033BillWunkleParticipantSorry . . . Wrong Farmer. Larry Farmer is a college basketball coach. Ray did such a poor job that his name might as well have been Larry.

Good to see your track record for being completely wrong has gone untarnished.
No need to worry about rep splitting, or said rep splitting killing us, Brock is our starter and will get the reps as such accordingly.
Next to add to your unblemished record of wrongness: Greg Williams improving our defense and having them respectable, competent, and at least in the top 16.
Followed by a special bonus incorrect take!: that Corey Coleman is a weak bodied bust and will be out of the NFL in two years. Instead he’ll emerge as our #1 and have an impactful year.

Kenny Britt is much better (and he’s not even good).
Coleman had a great game against Baltimore. Other than that he’s a frail midget body catcher who’s a #3 at best.
Then again, we don’t have a QB.

August 17, 2017 at 5:03 pm #9040soupParticipantInjured last year. Injured in OTA this year. In college missed 7 games with injuries:
Frail – check
Catches with his body – check
Last year against Baltimore game 1 104 yards and 2 TDs.
His high yards in a game after that was 41. That’s 8 other games. That’s pathetic. How you are defending that as a stud type player is beyond me.
FYI he was injured after that game until 11/6 against Dallas.
So, what has he done to prove he’s more than a slot receiver?

Refreshing the page usually helps me (especially if you’re on a phone).
Try not letting life get in the way too much…we need as many Browns fans as we can get around here! Plus, who else is going to counter the counterpoints of Shooter and Soup?

Random thought: best defense to a bear is to wait until he rears up, kick that motherfucker in the balls and RUN.
August 21, 2017 at 12:14 am #9060ShooterModeratorRandom thought: best defense to a bear is to wait until he rears up, kick that motherfucker in the balls and RUN.
Disagree.
Landing a solid nut-shot to a bear determined to do ill will to you takes a Chuck Norris level of cunning, bravado, and skill the likes of which aren’t normally seen in most men. Especially when under the duress of being attacked by an apex predator in its own domain and quickly realizing the repercussions of a panicked miss, or even worse, the doom riddled and powerless thud that results if the bear is female. Your scalp will be removed from you before you even have time to process your mistake and certain mauling will ensue. Not to mention, bears aren’t like sharks where they’ll take a nibble, realize you aren’t food and then just leave you to die with a gaping wound. Bears will absolutely fucking eat you, and will most likely start before you’re even dead. That would suck.
What you want to do is raise your arms high above your head to create the illusion that you are much larger than you actually are. This will stun the bears thought process as it will not have seen that coming, and will immediately give you the upper hand in the conflict. At this point you need to charge the bear in a threatening manner, moving your arms feverishly to and fro but still keeping them high above your shoulders, all while letting out a primal scream. This will trigger the bears natural fight or flight response, and since the bear is actually just as afraid of you as you are of it, these maneuvers will establish dominance in the situation and the bear will retreat back into the woods. Once the bear has begun it’s retreat, DO NOT chase the bear, the goal is to trigger the “flight”, not the “fight”, which will happen if the bear is pursued and made to feel trapped, and as such, your heroics will be for not.
As the encounter draws to an end, you’re gonna want to get into full Jay-Z mode and go ahead n brush ya shoulders off to celebrate your wizardry and conquering of the outdoors. Then drink 3 beers as quickly as possible so that you can produce enough urine to effectively mark your territory in a short amount of time. Bears have an acute sense of smell that can pick up even the lightest scent from miles away, and the rage-induced endorphins released from your bladder will create a nearly impenetrable perimeter that the bear will be able to smell for quite some time and remind it to not re-engage you.
But go ahead and try to kick it if you want to. It’s your call really.
August 21, 2017 at 8:15 am #9062IceKeymasterRandom thought: best defense to a bear is to wait until he rears up, kick that motherfucker in the balls and RUN.
Nope. Kick the guy next to you in the balls and RUN. Maybe yell ‘Sorry’ over your shoulder as you run.
August 21, 2017 at 5:57 pm #9063DawgPoundDudeParticipantShooter, either you put way too much thought, time and effort into the mental makeup of a bear and subsequently peeing on things…or you, sir, are a borderline psychotic. Either way, well said. Still, Ice had a hell of an idea.
And this thread is officially off the rails. As in it grew wings, flew off, and landed on some French church.
