If both Josh McCown and Cody Kessler are 100% this week, who should start at QB?

Loading ...Of course for the future Kessler should get the snaps, but he’s got a really good chance of getting destroyed again behind our makeshift line. I’m thinking maybe we give Cody another week on the bench to heal up and maybe get some other guys healthy.
Kessler. The more looks the better. Personally I think he has a legit shot at being the long term answer. He’s highly accurate and makes smart decisions. If we can see him the rest of the year we’ll know the direction of our 1st pick. We MIGHT be able to avoid QB.
I can tell you this, if he played in any other team the people stating he was a reach in round 3 would be apologizing.

I’d say Kessler is a solid backup. I don’t think he’s a long-term starter, but I could be wrong, and there’s no point in giving McCown snaps. We know what he is, and while I like him, he’s not going to develop and he’s not a long-term solution so giving him snaps is basically a waste.
If Kessler can throw a half decent deep ball, he could be the long term answer, but that’s supposed to be the knock on him.
To be honest though, a solid backup QB in the 3rd round is a good pick, IMO. Lots of pundits owe Sashi and Hue an apology that they’ll never get.
You know, this is completely unfair to Whitehurst, don’t you? I mean, did you guys watch the same game I did? All that big play capability on display? His… *hears ESPN alert on phone* …oh. Well, he’s just been released, and they’ve called up Hogan from the practice squad.
Well now. Damn, I had this whole big Jesus argument to make, and ESPN has just found another way to fuck up that facet of my life. Well, let me go on record to state how unfair this thread/vote is to Kevin Hogan…
OK, fuck it. If they’re both 100%, Kessler has to play. If it’s one or the other (McCown good, Kessler not so much), then I say let Kessler heal up until he can go. No need to risk him…unless of course the McCowpter touches down to end our first drive this week.
I told my wife the Browns were being fined by OSHA for providing an unsafe working environment for QB’s and her response was “Really? I thought the NFLPA had pre-negotiated injury settlements with the NFL so OSHA didn’t apply for injuries that occur during normal play.”
She’s great at cocktail parties.
I voted for McCown – reason being is we haven’t had 2 qb’s go down in the same game yet this year so I rather see McCown play first half and see what Kessler does when we’re down by 20.

Kessler has essentially played half the time as Wentz.

People love Wentz deep ball and people knock Kessler. One guy was the darling of the draft the other was “picked to early by clueless people.”
Deep balls come with time. Kessler is on pace with the #2 overall pick in terms of deep ball success so far.
Kessler needs the improvement in the passes 11 to 20 yards in the air. That’s been his downfall so far (if you want to call a downfall 67% completion from a guy without his #1 WR and on center #3) and Wentz has HIGHLY excelled to a ridiculous level in this area. But deep ball? He’s as average as any young player (Tom BRady SUCKED at the deep ball early in his career – it’s timing and practice).

I like Kessler, I do.
But he’s not wowing me at all. He’s not doing anything to make me think he is, can, or will be “the guy”.
He’s a solid player, but I just don’t see him being anything more than a backup. He’s a guy who can come in and lead your team to a win when your starter goes down. I think he can be dependable and give the organization a feeling of “hey, if so-and-so goes down, Kessler is capable of executing the offense and keep us afloat til so-and-so gets back.” That’s actually awesome to have.
But “the guy”. No. If I’m being generous, he has an average arm. If I’m being realistic, it’s substandard and there are a lot of throws that he just can’t make. Is it Ken Dorsey/Connor Shaw bad? No. But there will be no needle threading in his game. There will be no “throwing a reciever open”. I think that’s he’s smart. I love his accuracy. I like the leadership he brings. They’re great intangibles. But if he’s gonna start, his ceiling is probably Chad Pennington.
That doesn’t really wow me at all.
And he’s 0-4 now.
I agree with both Ice and Shooter on this one. Like I have said about other qbs we have had….Kessler is neither going to win or lose us a game.

It’s very early in his career to count him out. He spent the entire summer as the 3rd QB working with the scout team. He was not groomed to be a starter at all. He’s doing more than a serviceable job considering all the hardships he’s presented with.
I’d rather see him under center than anyone else on our roster.

Oh come on now Soup, let’s be real here. Sure he’s just like Drew Brees, ehhh without Drew Brees’ velocity on a football. If you’re going to compare him to a HOF’er, I’d say more like Peyton Manning in his final season in Denver.
If you think Kessler throws even remotely the same kind of ball as Brees, I’m just going to add it to the incredibly insane volume of things you’ve said.
